“Adequate, but in major need of a thorough overhaul”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2010

We stayed here for 2 nights at the beginning of our "Banff to Vancouver" road trip through the Rockies. We paid £70 a night for the room, which was around mid-range for the hotels in the area.

We arrived at 2.15pm on the first day and asked if there was any chance we could check in. We were met with a prompt "No, you're room will not be ready until 4pm!". No "Here's your car pass, park right up and may I suggest x for lunch or x for a nice walk to fill the time whilst you're waiting?" No, none of that! Very poor reception, very poor.

The first room we were put into was dark and depressing, at the rear of the hotel, and looked out onto the rooftops of other buildings. We complained and were moved to a slightly lighter room at the front looking out onto the street.

The furniture looked like it hadn't been changed since the early 80's and showed wear and tear. The beds were very comfortable, but we both woke with terrible backache on both mornings. Obviously a tad too soft! Housekeeping weren't up to much having failed to dust or hoover properly; you just had to look at the armchair by the table to see that the only dusting done on that was by the backside of each occupant, as the accumulation of muck at the edges clearly showed this!

The walls were very thin and you could hear people thundering up and down the corridors. The slaming of doors was also a rude awakening at 7am each morning.

I've rated this hotel as a 3 out of 5 for Value, basing it on the reviews of the other hotels in this price range in the area. It was OK, but not "great" and not "terrible".

In summary, I'd probably stay here again over any of the other budget hotels in the area, but if a different one was available at the same price, I'd book there like a shot.

Time for a lick of paint, Mount Royal.

Plus sides for this hotel: Fabulous central location, big comfy beds, tasty breakfast

Down sides: Walls are very thin so you can hear the room next door talking, corridors are very long and this is a cheaper hotel so you get drunken students loudly returning to their rooms all night long, then other people get up early to go skiing, then to top it off ceilings are also not at all sound proof as you hear the room above get up and bang around to get the earliest ski bus. I woke every night every hour, after a few days here I felt like I needed a holiday to catch up on sleep.

Locatated in the town centre. This is an old hotel and is a bit dowdy. Everything is adequate but nothing is special. It is a big hotel but there are only 2 lifts and one of those is permanently out of service. This meant we had to carry our bags up and down about 10 steps where the floor level changed. OK for us but not if you are infirm. Our room had a king size bed which more or less filled it. It was a bit stuffy as we could not open a window. The mountain view from the room was spectacular.

This hotel is located right on the "main" drag of Banff and comes with free parking. The room itself is NOT big - our room had one queen size bed. Perhaps rooms with 2 beds might be slightly bigger. The bed was very soft...not sure if I liked it or not. The bathroom was a fair size and we certainly had a good laugh when we saw the hair dryer attached to the wall from the 60-70s. The room was a bit on the tired side but it was clean, as were the hallways, and lobby. The staff were friendly and helpful. We chose this hotel not for the bells and whistles but for its location. We were very happy with our choice.

I highly recommend eating at the Grizzly House which is across the street - an awesome experience!!!!

The Banff hot springs were also enjoyable - please note - for those not familiar with outdoor hot springs - it is a pool with hot water.

The double bed suite was excellent, service impeccable, great place to be.
I had a quick business trip to Calgary, decided to visit Banff & enjoy our stayed, then traveled up to the City of Champions Edmonton, a great place too!

We stayed here in early August. The hotel is acceptable and the beds very very comfortable. The room had a view of the mountains at the rear of the hotel. However, we both felt that the room we had (facing away from the main street and towards the car park at the back) was a little cramped and slightly on the shabby side. The tap in the small bathroom stopped functioning and wouldn't produce cold water while we were there though, to be fair, the hotel maintenance guy fixed it immediately. The air conditioning unit was OK but could have been slightly more effective. The room & small bathroom really could do with some refurbishment/re-modelling though I understand that some rooms have had this. The staff were perfectly adequate and the hotel has a very good position in the centre of Banff. My feeling is that the hotel tends to rely too much on large tour bus clientele who are only staying one night (i.e. arrive midday and seem to leave early morning). To summarize: adequate, comfortable bed but rooms/bathroom could be better.

Stayed here in August. Right in the middle of prime time tourist season. Really enjoyed the fact that the hotel was right in the middle of Banff. The Rooms are comfortable and definitely a bit more rustic compare to a 3 star hotel in a city. They make up for this with a very clean rooms, and nice beds. The free parking and Internet was definitely a plus. The surrounding area of the hotel can get noisy at certain time of the day. If you stay in rooms facing the back packing lot, you will hear the tour buses warming up in the morning, and if you stay in rooms facing the front street, you will hear the bars just down the street at night. The shops on the main streets of Banff general closes at around 11pm during the summer months, So take that in your consideration when asking for a prefer room location. The attached Tony Roma only serves breakfast in a buffet. While you get all you can eat… the quality is definitely not all you can stomach.
