“Wonderful stay at Mount Royal Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2013

My wife and I stayed at the Mount Royal for 2 nights in late Sept, 2013. The staff was great at check-in which always helps get off to a good start. The room was comfortable and very clean except for a few spots on the carpet (that happens with people tracking grime in on their boots). The beds and sheets were fantastic! The bathroom was very clean (yay!), although it was a bit small as is often the case in hotels. Not a problem for us at all, but don't be surprised. Overall a great value and would be my first choice if I ever get back to Banff.

Room Tip: Top floor is probably best as the wood floors allow some of the noise to travel down. We liked overl...

Dear Jim D,

Thank you for your recent review of the Mount Royal Hotel.

It is great to hear that you had such an enjoyable stay with us. I am glad our front desk staff made a positive impression on you.

Please accept our sincerest apologies for the condition of the carpets. Our staff are working diligently to deep clean each and every carpet.

As you mentioned, a room on the upper floor will prevent the sound of footsteps. For our guests who are light sleepers, requesting a room on the backside of the building will help keep the noise level down. For others, a view of main street is perfect.

Thank you for making us your first choice hotel in Banff! We are excited to welcome you back again.

Sincerely,

Very busy hotel for the national park area --Tony Romas restaurant in the hotel was good and wholesome with good breakfast choices and prompt service .The town of Banff is really just a huge souvenier shop with little else to offer . The cable car up sulpher mountain is spectacular and should not be missed .

Dear Colintimms,

Thank you for your recent review of the Mount Royal Hotel.

I am glad you enjoyed your stay as well as our on site restaurant Tony Roma's.

Banff does have a lot of souvenir shops, there is no denying that. However, our small town does also offer many hiking and biking trails, horseback riding, scenic drives, museums, Bow Falls, restaurants, etc. Should you return, our front desk agents would be more than happy to help you plan your activities.

It is great that you took the gondola up Sulphur Mountain and were able to experience the Rockies from above.

Thank you again for your review and we hope to welcome you back soon.

Sincerely,

This hotel has a great location on Banff Avenue. It is within walking distance of everything. Great value. The room decor has been updated. There is a beautiful view of the mountains from our 3rd floor room. The beds are comfortable. Staff is friendly and courteous. There is a little hallway noise transfer, however not enough to worry about. Mostly from guests arriving after 2:00 a.m. The only slight downside is the tight quarters of the location of the toilet and the end of the counter-top; after the renovations they could have given a few more inched between the two. The staff were able to quickly rectify a small problem we encountered with our safe. When the safe wouldn't open, we called the front desk and the maintenance man and locksmith had it opened within half an hour of the phone call. They were very efficient and we were grateful as we had dinner reservations which we were able to meet.

Room Tip: If you can, ask for a room on the 3rd floor at the back of the hotel, as the view of the mountains i...

Stayed here for two nights with husband and daughter. Our room was on level two facing the main street with the mountains as a backdrop. The room was modern, spacious and clean. The carpet had stains and would benefit from replacement soon. However, at such as great price and location, you can't complain. The beds are very comfortable.

Room Tip: 'Social noise' at closing times. If you are a light sleeper, request a quieter room in the b...

Dear retrain,

Thank you for your recent review of the Mount Royal Hotel.

It is great to hear that you and your family found our location unbeatable, the beds comfortable, and the rooms clean and modern.

Please accept our sincerest apologies for the state of the carpets. Our staff are currently doing a routine carpet shampoo in each room to help liven them up.

Thank you for mentioning the 'social noise.' For those that are light sleepers, requesting a room at the rear of the building would help as it is away from the main street.

Thank you again for your review and we hope to welcome you and your family back soon.

Fantastic location, couldn;t have asked for a better spot. Staff all friendly and more then happy to help. Food was great, beverages even better :) jacuzzi was a bonus to soak away the aches of travelling. Housekeeping was super, cannot fault them. The onyl think which would have made my stay an absolute 10 out of 10 would be if they had a scale to weigh my luggage :)

I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights on a weekend. The location is quite good, right on Banff avenue in the center of town. If you are a very light sleeper you might want to request a room that does not face out onto Banff Ave, it can get a bit rowdy on that street on weekend nights. The facilities inside the hotel were good and the staff were pleasant, but I was taken aback by two things. First, there is a substantial deposit required when you check in for "damage and incidentals": $100 on a credit card or $200 in cash. I found that exorbitant and poorly advertised when I booked the room. It also felt somewhat discriminatory to charge so much more if you had to do it in cash, plus I had to wait around like a criminal when checking out while my room was looked over before my $200 was returned. As a middle-aged single female, I'm not sure what kind of ruckus they thought I was going to get into. Also at check out I was charged for making local calls on the room phone... Really?! It doesn't cost anything for the hotel when guests make LOCAL calls, and though the charges weren't high, again I didn't see this policy advertised anywhere (if it was, it was not prominent). It made me wonder what kind of charge I'd be slapped with if I had used the coffee machine. Glad I didn't. Would not return, there are better budget options in Banff.

Dear BuddhistMittens,

Thank you for your recent review of the Mount Royal Hotel.

Please accept my sincerest apologies for any inconveniences you may have experienced.

We do have stricter policies in place for those wishing to check in without a credit card as we need to ensure that we are able to recover any costs associated with your stay. Our decision to charge a $200.00 is not personal, it is a policy that applies to everyone that wishes to check in without a credit card.

Upon check out we do need to check the room before we can return your deposit. This is to ensure that we do not need to charge for any damage, smoking, etc. I am sorry if you felt this was discriminatory as it is not meant to be. It is the same policy for every guest that checks in without a credit card.

Once again, please accept my sincerest apologies that you did not enjoy your stay.

Thank you for your review,

Sincerely,

This hotel is located on Banff's main tourist street. Many shops and a number of restaurants right outside your door. The hotel room (233) was of good size but somewhat dated. The lighting was poor, the carpet had many large stains and the bathroom tub was in need of new grout and caulk. The bed was very comfortable!! Our room rate for two nights was $288, which is probably a decent rates considering the location was so good. Great view of the sunrise from our room. I would stay here again.

Dear Super W,

Thank you for your recent review of the Mount Royal Hotel. We are pleased that you enjoyed the convenient location of the hotel and the size of the rooms.

As you mentioned, the carpets are not in the best condition. I assure you our maintenance and housekeeping departments work hard to do a deep shampoo of each carpet on a regular basis. While it does not remove all stains, it keeps them clean. We hoping to replace the carpets in the near future.

That is a beautiful picture you took of the sunrise.

Thank you again for your review and we hope to welcome you back again soon.
