“Perfectly situated”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

This hotel was right in the centre of all the action, shops, restaurants etc right on hand. Our room was at the rear of the building and was quiet, but the view was disappointing. We used the back elevator as it was less busy, although a bit on the tired side.
The hotel contains a busy restaurant, lounge, pub, hot tub and sauna although we did not use the last three mentioned.

Dear Taurangahawk,

Thank you for your recent review of the Mount Royal Hotel.

We are very pleased to read that you enjoyed our downtown location. As we are located in the heart of the downtown core, our guests are a minutes walk to most restaurants, shopping, festivals, trail heads, and more.

unfortunately it is not possible for every room in our building to come with a perfect view of the mountains. Luckily, when you step outside you are greeted by mountains in every direction. Upgrading your room type or requesting a better view on your reservation are great ways to get mountain views from your room.

Thank you for your business and we hope to welcome you back in the future.

Sincerely,

Like what most people say, the hotel is older and some have been refreshed. We stayed in a King room which is huge! there was a big open space in the middle of the room (guess with families a second bed or a crib could be placed there) There is not AC so the fan is always on giving a constant humming sound.

The bathroom was quite small but new sinks, tub, toliet and counters were installed. There was a mini fridge in the room which is always a plus.

The only quirk I had was the carpet. It was obivously a lot older and there was an ugly split accross the room. We stayed on the 3rd floor and the elevators were alot slower comparied to the one with access to the parking lot.

With access to the main street, this is a perfect location for trolling the night life in Banff and then stumbling back to the room to sleep it off.
We also booked the Alpine package off the website and got the gondola ride to Sulphur Mountain and the dinner on top. Alberta residents can also get a good deal with a breakfast bundle.

Dear Jimmeral,

Thank you for your recent review of the Mount Royal Hotel. We greatly appreciate hearing from our guests so that we can celebrate our successes and make improvements to other areas.

We do have air conditioning in our guest rooms, so this is what was probably making that sound. I will have maintenance take a look to make sure nothing is wrong.

We have been doing a routine carpet shampoo of all the carpets in the hotel. We are preparing to replace them in the near future as well.

Our Alberta Resident's package will continue throughout the winter as well. It would be a great chance for you to come back for all those powder days at the ski hill! The ski bus picks up at the rear of the building and we have a massive ski and snowboard locker located near the parking lot for your convenience.

Thank you for your business and we hope to welcome you back in the near future.

Sincerely,

We stayed at the Mount Royal for two nights while meeting up with friends in Banff. The hotel has apparently been around for ages -- it is owned by Brewster which has been around as long as people have been travellling to Banff and now owns many of the major tourist operations. In its current incarnation the hotel building appears to date from the 1960s or so. We stayed in a King room -- an attractive good-sized room with a comfortable bed, and decor that seems to have been updated fairly recently. Our friends stayed in a Queen room which they said was smaller and older -- apparently the decor refresh has not reached every room in the hotel. We didn't get lucky with our view -- basically an interior view of a corrugated metal fire escape with a view of the mountains if you twist your neck really hard -- but most rooms have a decent view either of Banff downtown or the mountains. The staff are friendly and helpful.

The hotel's downtown location puts it within walking distance of a wide selection of shops and restaurants as well as some walking trails, e.g., along the Bow River. There is a Tony Roma's BBQ restaurant on the ground floor which gives the lobby a recognizable BBQ restaurant smell/aroma/whatever. There is also a breakfast buffet there, which is a bit pricey for what it is.

The hotel is now made up of several connected buildings and there are some mandatory stairs on the way to some of the rooms. I assume it shouldn't be a problem getting an accessible room if you need one though.

This is obviously not a destination hotel like some of the pricier places in the Banff area but it is definitely a clean, attractive, and comfortable place to call home, and with the added plus of a very convenient location.

Dear ihbToronto,

Thank you for your thorough review of the Mount Royal Hotel. You provided a lot of information that many guests probably would not have read otherwise.

The Mount Royal was built in 1908 making it the 2nd oldest hotel in Banff (the first being the Fairmont Banff Springs). The Brewster family purchased it in 1912 and it has been a part of the company ever since. During our Refresh in 2012 we decided to leave a lot of the woodwork to maintain a sense of the heritage. As you mentioned, some of our rooms were not given a complete Refresh and are not as modern.

Tony Roma's is accessible from our lobby and open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Feel free to ask our friendly front desk agents about breakfast restaurants in the downtown area that are budget friendly.

While we are not a fully accessible hotel (we do not have roll in showers, wider door frames, etc) we accommodate most needs. Giving us prior notice will really help us to find the perfect fit for each request.

Thank you for your business and we hope to welcome you back in the near future.

Sincerely,

Jessica Hall

I stayed in this hotel for 2 nights as it was part of a booked Tour through the Rocky Mountains. It is well situated in the middle of Banff. Conveniently located downtown, this hotel is close to many shops, restaurants and scenic attractions. Hotel features include a restaurant, lounge, pub, hot tub and sauna. I had a room at the back of the hotel with a view of the mountain, it was very quiet and I had a peaceful night, just what I needed. The front rooms face the street, which can be noisy. The room was clean and neat and had a coffee bar as well. The bed was very comfortable. The bathroom (shower, bath and toilet) is small, but clean and had soaps and shampoos to use. The staff were friendly and helpful and made one feel very welcome. Should I ever return to Banff, I will return to Mount Royal!

Dear BellaPretoria

Thank you for your recent review of the Mount Royal Hotel. I am very pleased to read that you thoroughly enjoyed your stay and would return to the Mount Royal for another stay!

As you mentioned, our guestrooms located at the rear of the building tend to quieter as they are away from the main street and perfect for light sleepers. Many of these rooms feature beautiful views of Tunnel and Rundle Mountain.

We did a Refresh to many of our guestrooms in 2012 and purchased new mattresses, bedding and televisions, and bathroom fixtures.

Thank you again for your feedback and we hope to welcome you back soon!

We stayed 4 nights in this hotel the location is amazing it is right in the centre of Banff and we had a room overlooking the high street which was a little noisy late at night on the Saturday but this did not affect our sleep. The room was clean and tidy and resonable size although the bathroom was very small. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
There is a Tony Roma Restaurant and Lounge at the hotel and the food was excellent there! We did visit the Paddock Pub which hard to find but attached to hotel. The pub was a little rough around the edges, dark and gloomy, needless to say but we didnt go back there as there is a hugh amount of better pubs and bars in close by.
We really enjoyed our stay in Banff and at the Mount Royal and would go back.

Dear 810SarahG,

Thank you for your recent review of the Mount Royal Hotel. We greatly appreciate hearing from our guests so that we can celebrate our successes and improve on other areas. Feedback such as yours helps us to do just that.

As you mentioned, some of our rooms overlook Banff Ave, the main street in Banff. While many people are not bothered by the sounds from the main street, light sleepers might be affected. I would suggest requesting a room facing the back of the building to avoid this.

Brewster Hospitality prides itself on providing our guests with exceptional service and it is great to hear that you were pleased with our staff.

I am glad you enjoyed the incredible food at Tony Roma's. We have recently added in a breakfast buffet area where you can choose the full hot breakfast or a continental breakfast. It is delicious and very handy for people with early starts in the morning as the buffet begins at 7AM.

We recognize that the Paddock was in need of something new. We have brought in new management and a new chef. They have released an incredible new menu with high quality foods and drink specials.

Thank you again for your feedback and we hope to welcome you back soon!

Sincerely,

Jessica Hall

We arrived at the hotel, checked in and recieved a parking pass where our vehicle stayed the whole time because we walked everywhere. Older hotel but it has still been updated.
Room facing Main street was awesome. Our room was pretty far from the main lobby but we still had an elevator and another entrance so close to our room it was great. The one odd thing was we had a flat sheet covering the mattress instead of a fitted one. So you would find yourself sleeping on the bare mattress during the night, which to me was a little odd. But that just may have been a mistake by a new cleaner.
Overall good stay we enjoyed it.

Room Tip: Facing Mainstreet if you like to have the sun, and a view of all the activity.

Dear Dustin C,

Thank you for taking the time to review the Mount Royal Hotel. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay and appreciated the convenience of a downtown location.

It is very common for hotels to use 2 flat sheets instead of using 1 fitted/1 flat and this was not a housekeeping mistake. Please accept our apologies if the sheet came off the mattress at night, this was not intentional. It should be tucked under the mattress tightly enough that the sheet does not come off while you are sleeping. Once again, please accept our apologies.

Thank you for your business and we hope to be able to welcome you back should you find yourself in Banff again.

Sincerely,

I stayed in this hotel because I was only in Banff for 2 nights visiting friends and I didn't want to spend my days walking miles to get to town. This hotel is literally in the middle of town.
I got in fairly late (48 hours after leave home!) and was able to check in quite easily. By the time I had settled in though the room service was shut at only 10pm. Luckily Subway is 24hr and I knew where the supermarket was so I was fine.
The room itself, although far from the elevator, and had a few stairs to navigate (with a 23kg suitcase which was not easy!), was big and just what I needed. The bed was comfortable, like a cloud. The bathroom was fairly small given the size of the room but it was big enough for what I needed (a toilet and a shower) and it was clean.
The staff are friendly whether checking in, checking out, or asking for something. After not so attentive air hosts/hostesses and a surly customs officer it was so nice to be greeted by someone friendly.

If I ever need a hotel in Banff again, it will be th Mount Royal for sure! Maybe next time I will have time to use the pool or check out the restaurant and bar...

Dear Kelly B,

Thank you for your kind review of the Mount Royal Hotel. It was a pleasure to host you and we are pleased that our staff were able to provide you with the kind of service you should have received on your flight!

We do apologize that our food and beverage were not open late enough to suit your needs. Our front desk staff are knowledgeable about all the restaurants and fast food locations in town that are open late should you require any alternatives to Subway (though a late night Subway always hits the spot).

Thank you for staying at the Mount Royal Hotel and for your loyalty. We would love to host you again should you find yourself back in Banff.
