A great hotel in Banff for a reasonable price. My sister and I stayed here for 2 nights and were quite comfortable. We didn't spend a lot of time in our room so we were just looking for a quiet, clean, place close to the centre of town and we found it at this hotel. Would definitely stay here again.

Stayed for one night while visiting Banff. Reserved it through Expedia and it could be cancelled up to 6 pm the night before. Great location, right on Banff Avenue. Very friendly staff. I would definitely return...

Room Tip: We had one room overlooking Banff Avenue and the noise late at night from the street was quite loud...

We stayed here for 4 days in July, managing to get 4 night for the price of 3 through trailfinders. We then used it as our base to explore much of the Rockies. It was a great idea, as an ideal place to have for a longer-term base.

The bed was very comfortable and a good size, the shower was decent enough, and the bath fine as well. Plenty of space for us to move around and unpack for a longer stay.

A fridge (empty) meant we could buy food to make sandwiches for our day trips, and milk for cereal (the hotel did have breakfast offered in the next door Tony Roma, but they had no skimmed milk, and very expensive cereal, so we went for the buy your own option).
There was also a washing line over the bath, which proved useful when we were staying and walking for a few days, so could do some of our own washing.

The central location was also ideal, making it really easy to pop out anywhere in town at any time of day. Parking was very easy and in abundance, with no additional cost. Wifi was also free, although our room was right at the end of the corridor, so we were always in range - might be worth asking for a more central room if this would annoy you.

The jacuzzi downstairs was also a nice addition, if in need for a little bit of updating. A fun way to unwind at the end of a hard day's hiking.

We only ate at Tony Roma's one morning for breakfast. There was a large buffet, as well as a menu order service, but we decided to go to the local supermarket and stock up ourselves to save a bit of cash.

We found the concierge really helpful, giving us great suggestions for places to eat, as well as where to find good deals.

Overall, a great hotel for staying a few days. Although not 'luxury', there was nothing missing, and was great value for location and amenities.

Room Tip: Not down one end if you want a perfect internet connection continuously.

Dear Nicola J,

Thank you for your review of the Mount Royal Hotel.

We appreciate your feedback and are pleased that you had such an enjoyable stay.

For our guests who are staying longer we definitely suggest requesting a room with a fridge. We understand that some guests may want to make their own food so we do not stock the mini fridge.

We love to hear when our staff make a positive impression on our guests. Our concierge are trained to know the most up to date information on Banff and relay to our guests. Often restaurants in town have daily specials they do not advertise so asking our concierge can help you save some money!

Thank you for again for your feedback and we hope to welcome you back to the Mount Royal Hotel should you find yourself back in Banff!

Sincerely,

Right in the middle of the town with walking distance everywhere, it had only one lift, but it was sufficient. The room was big and also the beds.
We had a view at the mount from our window, which you could open
(a rare thing in hotels). It was also the only hotel we stayed, which had 2 holders for suitcases. The was a kettle in the room and also tea bags.
The lights in the room were good and the drawers were big. The hotel also have a spa pool and sauna. It is very clean. The only problem the rooms are never ready until 4pm which is quite late.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the main street.

Dear Aklu,

Thank you for your wonderful review of the Mount Royal Hotel. We are pleased to hear that you thoroughly enjoyed your stay. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed the windows that open to let in the mountain air and the 2 suitcase holders that suited your needs.

As you mentioned, asking for a room away from the main street is great if you a looking for a quieter room in the hotel.

Please accept our apologies that you did not enjoy the guaranteed check in time of 4PM. While it is very common at Banff hotels to have a check in time of 4PM, we understand that some of guests wish to arrive early. Please indicate at the time of booking or give our front desk agents a call ahead of time and request an early check in and we will do our very best to accommodate you and your party.

Thank you for your business and we hope to welcome you back again,

Sincerely,

We arrived at the Mount Royal which had been reserved by a friend using one of those pay us now and we'll surprise you with the name of the hotel later sites.
The hotel is right downtown Banff and, despite the location and a room facing the main street, noise was not noticeable and, I am a very, very light sleeper. Perhaps the fact that we were there mid-week and not on a weekend made a difference. The town was very busy though.
When we checked in, we were given a room at the far south end of the hotel. The room was very old, very stained and completely unacceptable. I don't know if hotels reserve rooms for those "surprise!" sites or not but, we asked for another room and were willing to pay extra to move. No extra charge was levied.
The next room was much better and very clean, spacious and comfortable with a separate bedroom and sitting area. Oddly enough, when our friends arrived several hours later, they were given a room identical to our second room.
I have this lingering suspicion that these bidding websites negotiate deals with hotels and are given inferior rooms but, I just don't know. I do know that I would much prefer to pay a little more and know the name of the hotel in advance. I wouldn't like to be unpleasantly surprised in an unfamiliar city. We live a few hours from Banff, visit there or travel through often and know that the vast majority of hotels are very good to excellent. Despite our initial displeasure at the quality of the first room, I would stay here again. The hotel, despite it's age is very nicely maintained and has a great historic feel about it. There is ample guest parking and the lobby and restaurants are excellent as was the staff. Everything in Banff is within walking distance of the hotel but, given the size of Banff, you could walk just about anywhere from anywhere else. A car in the town itself isn't really necessary.

Room Tip: our first room was in a wing on the far south end of the building and the room was very badly in nee...

Dear Shibibi,

Thank you for your review of Mount Royal Hotel. We appreciate hearing feedback from our guests so that we can celebrate our successes and work hard towards overcoming our challenges.

I do apologize that you were unhappy with your first room. I believe you were put in our standard room to begin with. These rooms are the least expensive option and they tend to be the rooms selected for the websites where you find out the location after purchase. This is because you are paying a lot less than the rack rate for the room. I am happy that our staff was able to put you in a Premium room where the rooms have been modernized. Websites such as the one your friend booked tend to be for the more budget conscious, meaning the rooms provided to the website will be our standard rooms. If you book directly through our website or call our reservations hotline, one of our agents would be able to help you book a room that would meet your specific needs.

We are very proud of the history of the Mount Royal Hotel. Dating back to 1908, the hotel was one of the first in Banff, has overcome detrimental fires, and grown to be a historical landmark in the town. We aim to modernize what we can without losing the history.

Thank you very much for your review and we hope to see you again soon,

Sincerely,

Jessica Hall

I was worried about this hotel since it is older and right in the middle of downtown but it was perfect. I loved the king sized bed. Great view even though I looked out over the parking lot. The bathroom has no counter space but was no big deal. There was a safe, coffee pot, kettle, fridge, hairdryer and iron in my room. It was a little rough around the edges but it's a hundred year old hotel so what do you expect? Wifi came and went. I was about as far away from the lobby as you could be so that may have been a factor. The room was bright and clean. The décor was modern. Surprisingly it was very quiet...until Sat night. Then I had a roomful of teenagers partying in the next room and pizza lying facedown on the floor in the hall in the morning. I was really tempted to complain but was just wishing the hotel would send someone around for a floor check. There must have been 6-10 people in that room and I could hear every word. But the rest of the week it was quiet. And you really can't beat the location. I stayed 4 nights by myself and didn't need to rent a car. Front desk staff weren't very knowledgeable. Never saw a concierge once. Had a little problem with the door on my room not closing properly and they fixed it immediately and gave me a free breakfast. Was pricy but I think everything in Banff is. Was able to get a discount using CAA on checkout. Would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a fridge. Ask to be in a quiet part of the hotel.

Dear LauraSecord2011,

Thank you for the review of Mount Royal Hotel. We appreciate you taking the time to provide us with your feedback.

We are happy to read that, for the most part, you enjoyed your stay with us. Please accept our sincerest apologies that you experienced a loud crowd on Saturday night. Next time that happens, please call the front desk. Our front desk agents will respond immediately after they receive a noise complaint or report of spilled pizza in the hallway. Our night auditor should be doing routine sweeps of the hotel, but if for some reason they are unable to get away from the desk, giving them a quick call will resolve the situation immediately. We also hire a third party security company to help increase the level of protection at the hotel. Once again, please accept our apologies that you were inconvenienced by the loud group on the Saturday.

Your 'Room Tips' are great advice for guests wanting a room with a fridge (please mention this request at the time of booking and note that fridges are limited and many of them located in our king rooms). And the 'quieter' part of the hotel is the back of the hotel. Many of the rooms at the back feature beautiful views of Tunnel Mountain and Rundle Mountain.

Thank you again for your feedback and we hope to welcome you back soon,

Sincerely,

Jessica Hall
