“Great place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2012

Great staff, pleasant friendly and efficient in all areas. Excellent service during a very busy Christmas/New Year's season. Minimal wait time at front desk and quick response to anything needed. Hallway carpets slightly worn but with so many people walking through with ski boots on, easy to forgive this one imperfection. Excellent value.

Room Tip: We had a two bed room which was larger then many I have been in but I did hear complaints that the o...

We have been to banff for the past 8 years, and for the past 7 years always stayed in the same hotel The Caribou Lodge, unfortunatley for us, this hotel was not available to us through our tour operator. We were offered the Mount Royal, we knew of this hotel and thought from the outside it looked OK so we booked it!! bitterly disappointed with the whole of our stay in this hotel!! the only good thing was that it is in the centre of town, but other than that there is nothing really good that I can say about this hotel. When we arrived and checked in which was rather late in the evening (christmas eve), we where given the key, we went upto our room, it was the smallest possible room, with one double bed, the smallest closet (the hanging rail went from front to back of closet rather than side to side) this gave us about a foot of hanging space! we had a chest of draws with just 3 draws! we where staying for two weeks skiing holiday, and therefore not enough storage space at all!! We where next door to the laundry room and throughout the stay people used it very late at night, the walls are very thin so we heard the water filling the washing machines and the noise of the machines, even though there was a sign that said the laundry was open from 10am until 10pm, no-one took any notice of this, one evening we came back, after an evening out and there was two people sat on the floor outside our room and laundry, chatting away late into the night, the walls being so thin we could hear all there conversation, due to the walls being so thin, we could hear all doors opening and closing, after a days skiing on christmas day, we got back to the hotel, we had to ask the reception staff if there was a hot tub and where it was, and also where was breakfast being served, as NO information was given to us on our arrival!! ~As we had been to Banff for the past 8 years, we knew where everything was in town, but we wanted to try Nakiska for a days skiing, we asked a reception, and they could not give us any information, we then asked the concierge and he could not help, we then picked up a leaflet, and tried ringing several times and was always put on hold, so we asked at reception if they could find out for us, they said that they would and would leave a message on our room phone for when we got back, but nothing!! We ate in the paddock pub which is part of the hotel, and this was a disaster from the start, we waited 90mins for a burger and a steak sandwich, but when it finally arrived it was so overcooked it was disgusting!! When we checked out of the hotel, we recieved our checking out statement for a breakfast and a phone call, and we where charged over $50, when I queried this, I was informed that this hotel charged for local calls (The Caribou dont charge for local calls), so the couple of calls to Nakiska where charged! and the cost of the call to the UK was obscene!! again compared to the 20c per minute charged by the Caribou Lodge!! Basically we where not impressed with the Mount Royal and would most definitley not stay here again!! If I cant stay at the Caribou Lodge I probably would not go back!!! ~The bed was the most uncomfortable thing I have ever slept in, so soft that if we moved it felt like a water bed!! and the pillows where terrible! the thermostat in the room kept changing itself all the time, we set it to 68 and when you wake up its set itself to 72, we had a window in the room, but it was a solid piece of glass - you could not open it - therefore no fresh air !!

Room Tip: do not go for room 363, it's the in the old part of the hotel, looked directly out to a wall and...

Thank-you for taking the time to send us your feedback regarding your most recent stay at the Mount-Royal hotel.

I was very sorry to see that your experience did not meet your expectations. We always try our very best to ensure that all of our guest have a pleasant stay while they are with us. I will personally go have a look at the mattress in the room in question. We have recently changed all of our beds in all of our guest rooms. You will find that most hotel charge for all phone calls, it is quite a standard procedure in Banff. I do apologize for the location of your room, not all of our rooms have a mountain view but pretty close to it. We are always happy to try and move a guest to different room if occupancy permits.

Once again, thank-you for your comments. We do take them to heart.

Although a tad long in the tooth, the central location of this hotel is a definite plus. Accessible to variety of downtown restaurants and easy to walk to anywhere in the downtown area. The rooms are comfortable and staff is very accommodating.

Thank-you for taking the time to send us your comments regarding your recent stay at the Mount-Royal hotel.

I’m glad to see your comment regarding our staff, we are very proud of them. Outstanding customer service is one of our primary goal at the hotel. I’m also glad to read that you’ve enjoyed your room. We have been working very hard as of late to improve that part of the hotel. We have new flat screen TV in all of our rooms and new mattresses as well. And you know what they say, location, location, location. We have that part covered.

Once again, thank-you for your feedback and we hope to see you again.

We had adjoining standard rooms with two families at the Mount Royal Dec. 29 & 30, 2011 over looking Banff Avenue. Room was very spacious with 12 foot ceilings with fan [where do you ever get that?], two queens, closet, desk, dresser, table and comfy chairs. New flat panel LG TV and new bed and linens. Hot tub was enormous and staff extremely curious and helpful. Very reasonable rate [stay & soak] that included Sulphur Mtn. Gondola passes and Hot Springs passes for $149./night. Parking was a bit of a challenge, but we managed. Ardvark pizza just out the back door and across the street was awesome and open unti 4:30 am.

Thank-you for taking the time to send us your feedback regarding your recent stay at the Mount-Royal hotel.

I was very pleased to read that you’ve had such a wonderful time while you were with us. The stay soak and soar is one of our popular package, very reasonably priced I do agree with you on that. We have recently changed all of our TV in all of our guest rooms to flat screen. We’ve also changed all of our mattresses as well in all of our rooms. By the looks of it, you were in one of our superior suite. They are quit spectacular.

Once again, thank-you for your comments and we hope to see you again.

We booked a room through one of the discount websites and they put us in the very farthest room from the front desk. It was small but well put together, very comfy, BUT, the smell of mould was over-powering. I was in Banff again last weekend and just walking by the door I could smell the mould. This place needs to be closed down and have a mould remediation performed. Seriously! The location on themain street is great, except on Saturday night when the noise levls are very high.

Room Tip: Check the room before taking it...go in and smell around.

Mr. Dano,

I would like to thank you for taking the time to post a review about your most recent stay with us at the Mount Royal Hotel.

Your comments regarding mold in our hotel, or your particular room is quite concerning to me. We pride ourselves on offering our guests safe, comfortable accommodations during their time in Banff. This is the first comment I have received in regards to mould anywhere in our hotel. Our Housekeeping department are in our guest rooms daily for cleaning and are well trained on identifying any abnormal odors and report them accordingly. We would never put our guests in a room that could pose any danger to anyone. If any of our guests have concerns regarding their room I invite them to immediately notify us to give us an opportunity to rectify the situation.

I invite you to contact me with the room you stayed in so I can personally inspect the room in question. Please feel free to email me at info@mountroyalhotel.com

Regards,
Chris Barr

Ski Trip Dec. 27-30. Great location in downtown Banff, however, rooms facing Banff Ave. are noisy due to late nite activity on the street. Even with ear plugs, yelling and partying on the street will keep anyone up. I would not stay at this hotel again due to the noise of the street. Too bad, because otherwise the hotel is good for a few days for a ski trip.

Room Tip: Do not stay on side the faces banff avenue.

Thank-you for taking the time to send us your feedback in regards to your most recent stay at the Mount-Royal hotel.

I was sorry to read about your experience while you were staying with. We are a down town hotel and unfortunately, we cannot control the noise coming from outside our property. The town as a whole does become a little more noisy during the holidays. Guest satisfaction is always our primary goal, to that effect, we are always happy to move a guest to a different room providing occupancy permit.

Once again, thank-you for your comments and we hope to see you again.
