“Annual Girls Weekend”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2013

Eight girl friends having been staying at the Douglas Fir for the last 7 years. We take the largest suite and it has everything we need to have the perfect weekend! The staff are always wonderful and the suite is well appointed and clean. As a hotelier myself I am very picky where I stay.

We make our next reservation before we leave because we just do not know where we would go and have the same memories and service.

Way to go you guys and keep up the good work!

Room Tip: If you have a large family ask about their room that sleep 8 it is wonderful.

We booked our Thanksgiving here, we usually stay downtown but chose the Douglas Fir because of the waterslide and kids play area as our daughter is almost 11 and it's nice for that extra activity inside should the weather take a turn for the worst! Check in was quick, friendly and efficient (thank you Duncan) with good instructions for a first time visitor. We had underground heated parking with a designated stall. Our room had a queen bed and a sofa bed, full kitchen (and I mean full as we had a dishwasher and full stove!!).... All the cutlery and dishes were provided as were dish detergent and dishwasher tablets! Really, home from home. Free firewood for the open fire and we had a huge patio with beautiful view. There is access for computer consoles, a DVD player and a huge flat screen TV. This was nice after a day full of activity, to settle down as a family with the fire going... We walked into town, it takes about 15 minutes (at the most) to get to the entry to downtown and about 20 (at the most) to take the mountain way to the middle of downtown. We passed wildlife so I recommend taking the walk..HOWEVER! You do get free bus passes with your room rate which get you onto transport free, the helpful people at reception provide a schedule with great instructions! We got the bus back up a few times after a few glasses of wine. We adore Banff and will be taking advantage of this fantastic resort again. You are nestled in the mountain away from the hubbub of downtown. We did have issues with our room card which ended up seeing the lock completely replaced. The team who helped us were really friendly and it was nice to chat about where we were all from. The only other downside was that the waterslides were closed one full day due to a biohazard. It is a shame as this was one of the main reasons we booked this resort but they have to make sure it is safe so we understood... there are so many things to do in Banff, this certainly did not spoil our vacation.. our daughter was a little disappointed but hey ho, these things happen. We will be back for sure, we plan to be more prepared to use the room amenities which will save on eating out so much (and feeling guilty and spending too much!!) We want to bring our bikes and explore the trails near the resort. Excited to come back!! Thank you for a wonderful Thanksgiving experience! Oh one thing that could be improved is perhaps extraction for the bathroom!

Room Tip: If you are travelling in the winter, would be nice to get a room which has the underground parking...

We have been going the this resort for 15 years and really have not come across this shoddy management of the waterslides. My two boys who have been there with us for these 15 years wanted to visit and have fun at the waterslides. When we went in to pay first of all it was $20.00 just to slide nothing else included. After they were done my oldest son had a huge blood bruise on his back, because the slides were not joined together at the seams properly. He went to the staff and said wow this was really bad and this is not good customer service at all, he continued with I know it's not your fault but you should tell your boss my concerns. I was really taken aback when I seen his back, and if they knew about this slide being uneven than why would they not tell there customers and maybe give a discount at time of purchase. If this was the US someone would be getting sued for sure.

We found this hotel to be a good base for our 3 day stay in Banff. The rooms are certainly not new, but we found it to be clean and comfortable and the kitchen was great to help keep some food costs down. We stayed in the main lodge in the condo loft and the view was beautiful out the back patio doors. Our two boys ages 8 and 10 LOVED the indoor water slides (which did look new) and the adults liked the hot tub. There is an onsite coin laundry available too.

The location was close to downtown Banff. I walked down one morning and that took about 20 - 25 minutes and the family met me with the car at Starbucks :). By car, less than 5 minutes and there was plenty of free parking downtown. Easy access to the highway as well for your travels to Lake Louise and other areas.

We found the front desk staff to be helpful and friendly and enjoyed hearing about where they were all from; lots of folks from Australia work in and around Banff.

So overall, a decent resort with indoor waterpark to come back to every evening. If you want new and fancy, should look elsewhere.

I recently spent a week at this hotel and would advise everyone to stay away. Two days before we were to leave one of the housekeeping staff went into our room and took an iPad. When we contacted security they were disinterested at best. they finally came and used a machine that told them what key had opened the door. They finally called the police several hours later. They said it took them that long to figure out which key opened the door. Surprise! it was a master housekeeping key. That is about as far as they went. In speaking with the RCMP constable who was assigned to the case he said the hotel was less than cooperative. The hotel kept saying that the key was only used to clean the room. We showed them that we were there when the room was cleaned and that someone went in after we left. I should note that until we left 2 days later no one offered an apology until we finally talked to who was in charge. It should be noted that we were given the name of someone in charge who repeatedly ignored our voicemails. Upon leaving we were given a discount on our bill but it wasn't even close to what replacing the iPad will cost. In speaking since with the Constable he hotel still wasn't very helpful in his investigation. If you should use this hotel DO NOT leave anything of value in your room.

No major complaints or excitement about this place. It has a two-slide water park for the kids, and an okay gym and indoor pool. It is not walking distance to any restaurants, but it's a very short drive to downtown Banff. We were located in the main lodge, so it's possible that one of the other buildings might have had more to offer. Don't rule this place out if higher-rated places are booked up.

The resort's webpage states that the extra charge for pets is "We pay special attention to our pet friendly rooms. Therefore, there is a pet charge of $25.00 per day per dog (all taxes included), to cover additional cleaning charges." REALLY??

We entered our room to very dirty floors, and a couch full of old chips, cheezies and popcorn. There was dirt in the tub. That was the plainly obvious stuff. (the hairdryer cord - gross - covered in old toothpaste and grunge) I brought the floors / couch to front desk attention and we went out for a few hours. On return, the couch had been cleaned up but the floors were still dirty. Does this resort not own a decent vaccuum so that they can pay "special attention" to their pet friendly rooms? I resented paying the $25/day for my non-shedding pup.

Another disappointment, was I woke one morning to a flat tire. We had to get to a booked excursion. I went to the front desk and explained the situation and that we had to get to Canmore for our booking - could someone give me hand changing the tire? Their response was to look up a local garage number and hand it to me on a piece of paper.

Thanks ... ? That should only take at least an hour to get someone up here...

Were I behind the desk, I would have said, "What's the name of your tour company? I'll give them a call and let them know what's happened for you and see if it's alright if you're a little late. I'll get ahold of our maintenance guy on site here and see if he can give you a hand."

Instead, I went out and flagged down a fellow resort resident who was gracious enough to lend a hand. (the resort maintenance guy to his credit spotted us changing the tire and offered to lend a hand, but we were nearly done)

So ... for the $200 less it was to stay here for the 3 nights, I'd stay elsewhere. You can pay to go to their waterslides as a family if you want to anyway if not staying there.

Room Tip: Inspect it before you accept it.
