I have been to HI hostels in many countries, and Rampart Creek is one of the best. It's in a perfect location for ice climbing. In summer it would be ideal for cycling, hiking, mountaineering and other outdoor activities. It's a long way from any cities, so the skies are dark and the stars are spectacular.
The bedrooms are small, but the beds are comfortable, the heating works well (kept us warm in temperatures as low as -35 C) and there's plenty of storage space. The kitchen is very well-equipped which is just as well as there's nowhere nearby to eat, so you're going to have to cook your own food. No showers, but there is a sauna! The manager, Ken, is friendly and has the right combination of efficiency and flexibility for a location like this. He made a lot of effort to help us when two of our team were climbing Polar Circus.
The only downside is the outhouse toilet. It's perfectly clean, but it's quite a thought to use an outhouse when it's -30 C!
