“Simply the best pub we've ever stayed in!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2014

As soon as you walk in the front door you just know you're going to have a lovely stay. the atmosphere was friendly and busy without being too busy. Obviously very popular with the locals but it never took me more than a minute or two to get served because there was ample staff on at all times.
The one thing that struck me was the fact that all the staff seemed to love their jobs, they knew the running of the pub abd B&B inside out and couldn't have been more helpful.
The bedroom was comfortable and dog friendly and right on your doorstep are some of the best walks imaginable. We had a lovely stay. In fact it was so good we didn't really want to leave. the food was just right and the beer was simply fab! A pub with it's own brewery , you can't go wrong. Probably the friendliest pub we have ever stayed in. Definitely coming back just not soon enough...

Great pub, great beer and good food, but let down this weekend by the beer festival. Which meant the little things get lost in the enormity of the festival. Things like; no toilet paper in our bedroom, far far too many people in the pub Saturday night, not enough staff behind the bar,(as no voucher system was used to buy the beer time was wasted getting change etc.), such that we walked to a nearby pub to get some space, the numbers need regulating, we couldn't even stand together because it was so packed. Our restaurant bookings for Friday & Saturday night were lost, fortunately a cancellation allowed us to eat on Sat night and we were squeezed in on Friday night. The breakfast area was unclean both mornings, the carpets were dirty with bits of food left on the floor from the previous night. Walk 3 from the website couldn't be followed, we know of 3 couples who tried to follow the map and all got lost, so don't try this walk. Besides these all was good, but I would not stay here during a beer festival. I would stay at any other time and will do, as the area is fantastic with good walks from the pub.

Room Tip: We were in a room over the area where the band was, felt like they were at the bottom of the bed. Bu...

We have had several meals at the Old Poets Corner and the food is excellent, so we decided to stay over for a romantic weekend, the staff are wonderful, the room was lovely and as ever the food was excellent. A wonderfully relaxing place to go for a weekend, a meal, or just a drink.
Can't wait to get back !

What a great place. Unspoiled pub. 3 separate rooms each with a welcoming fire. Fantastic range of hand pulled beers. Staff friendly and they let dogs in too. We had a starter as a snack of pork pie, mashed potato and peas with mint and apple jelly. Really tasty and filling for less than what a sandwich would cost. There is a car park but it's small however there's plenty of on road parking. Highly recommend ed.

We visited for two days whilst we checked out a puppy with a local breeder. It was welcoming, the food very good, home cooked, non- pretentious and plentiful, a good variety of beer. I liked the house brewed ones. Pleased to find it dog friendly for when we collect and we may well return to walk the area.
They seem to have a good music venue too; only criticism as a guitarist - open mike night had too many mournful strummers but hey some people like Neil Young! Breakfast excellent. I hear they have a holiday cottage which might be worth considering.Cosy bar with log fires was good for winter afternoons/evenings. Clean comfortable rooms not luxurious but very acceptable.

We stayed here for one night as it was a little treat to ourselves for our wedding anniversary, Ashover, a picturesque Derbyshire village being a 25 minute drive from home. We first visited The Old Poets a couple of years ago and fell in love with the bar/dining area's, with 3 open fires, gorgeous home cooked food, quaint and cosy decor, so you can imagine how pleased we were to find that we could b&b here too. We received a very warm welcome when we arrived, checking in at the bar was no hardship as the real ales are excellent. The room was very pretty and clean and we slept surprisingly well, the breakfast was amazing, with all the trimmings including thick succulent bacon and local free range eggs, what more could you ask for? Tom, the duty manager could not do enough for us, even though he was busy, he always made time for us and was very friendly and polite throughout the whole of our stay. We cannot recommend this place highly enough, but not too much as we don't want it to be too busy for our next trip here which hopefully, won't be too far in the future…:-)

Room Tip: Ask for the Wheatcroft room, this was our room and was nice and quiet.

The pub itself is excellent --good plateful of well priced food --plenty of choice with the beer and whilst a good number of ciders on the list with well known names could do with dropping the lower % types in favour of say Millwhites -- Gwynt y Draig - Janets Jungle Juice etc
Rooms --small but very clean and attractive and the Burns room above the kitchen led to a 6am wake up on Monday morning !!
The bad start was down to poor staff service who were rude in the extreme in response to a simple request. This really spoiled the Wedding Anniversary .The management did ,however, put the matter right the day after.
The car park seems to be permanently full of locals parked up so perhaps a "residents only " slot could be created. Can recommend a visit -- you will not be dissappointed

Room Tip: Do not stay in the Burns Room
