“Very Disappointing.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2013

We were recommended this Pub for it's food by a customer whilst discussing good places to eat in the area so we decided to give it a try. We rang in case we needed to book a table, which we did, on a Wednesday night which was impressive we thought it must be busy. When we arrived we parked on the road, not a problem and walked in to a lovely old small pub with quite a lot of people already in at 6.30 p.m. There was one person serving behind the bar, we ordered our drinks and said we had a table booked, she told us we had the table in the corner in the next room, when we sat down we found a piece of paper with someone 's name on it and 7.45 p.m on it obviously it was the next customers, it put us a little on edge knowing we only had the table for little over an hour. When we checked the menu board we discovered it was very limited with almost nothing to both start with or as a main course that we liked. We had to try and catch the attention of the girl serving at the bar to place our order .We both ordered the sirloin steak at £15.00 each which we would not normally have midweek. The meal arrived and was put in front of us, we were not asked if there was anything else we needed, the steak was small, the chips looked nice but there wasn't many of them and the little green leaves finished the plate off, no veg or onion rings. the steak did taste nice but was half the size I would expect for that price. No one came and asked us if everything was ok, it seemed to be a case of there's your meal and that's it. The place filled up very quickly so it must be popular but I can't say this pub gives value for money for it's food. We paid out bill at the bar, over £30.00 and left. Again we were not asked if we had enjoyed our meal. We were both still hungry and stopped off for a takeaway in Bakewell on the way home. Would I recommend this pub, no, I'm sorry to say it's over priced for what you get on your plate. If you are in the area carry on to The Red Lion at Litton where the prices are much more reasonable and you can't see the plate for the delicious food, the pub is just as lovely and quaint and the staff are a lot more pleasant and helpful. We will not be going back to the Packhorse, there are a lot more places to eat in the area where you get better value for money with better service.

“food ok”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2013

Limited menu, this is fine providing everything is available however, a couple of things were unavailable on both nights, this made a limited menu rather disappointing

“Oh dear.....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013

.....I really don't want to give this fantastic, little, proper english pub, with amazing food, the review it deserves....... in case I will never get a table again. Characterful, attentive staff, gifted chef, divine cuisine and oodles of atmosphere. In my mind there is nothing more I ask for when dining out. But ssssssshhhh, don't tell, long may it remain a hidden gem.

“Probably the best and most tradional pub in the Peak District”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2013

I was first introduced to this pub around six years ago and have thoroughly recommended it to all of our friends and regularly take guests there for the Real Ale and quality food served there, short menu but great local food, properly cooked and well presented by friendly staff

“Fantastic Find”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2013

We visited the Packhorse one evening after driving past by chance, we saw how busy it was and decided to go back for a birthday meal. We were so impressed with this place, we'd heard many good reviews from others and were not let down. The food is locally sourced and the pub has a cosy atmosphere with fantastic attentive service from the staff and a roaring fire. The pub is small so reservations are advised especially if you have a bigger party. Some fantastic choice on the menu which is on chalk boards in the bar including Buffalo burgers, venison, tapas. All food we ordered was exceptional and we would return without hesitation. The owners also accommodated us in bringing a birthday cookie. Many thanks to all at the packhorse for a lovely evening.
