“Food Good, service dreadful”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 5, 2012

We found this pub after being told the Carnarvon Arms was full and wish now that we had looked on Trip Advisor first as I will reiterate the comments from the previous 2 reviews, the service is awful.
We arrived at 8:15 and there were 2 other tables of people eating and a small number of people drinking. It took a long time for our drinks to arrive, even longer for the food. I didn't want to order a dessert because it had all taken so long, but was over ruled by the hungry family. Cold desserts took 20 minutes to arrive. The people serving were plesant enough but not at all attentive, although not rude the fact that they took so long over everything said to me that they did not care at all.
The food, excepting my scallops, was good. My daughter ordered mussels which were hot and tasty, her friend ordered a pizza which was clearly homemade and nice. My husband's lamb was perfectly cooked and he really enjoyed it. My scallops were supposed to come with a dressing, they were bare. The salad was supposed to have fennel, but it was 4 leaves of baby gem, some chopped up strips of apple and a bit of balsamic - poor. If there had been an explanation of this beforehand I wouldn't have ordered (and I didn't want to send it back as I could end up eating at midnight). The skinny fries were good, but I'm sure I was charged more than the menu price for them.
You get the feeling that this place could be so much more but it is let down by the attitude of the staff and their complete lack of care. Recommend that you avoid.

“Awful service, food choice lacking.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2012

Visited the restaurant on 2 consecutive nights, on the first night a Friday the service was very slow took well over an hour to get the main course and another hour for dessert. Put it down to lack of staff and not too much of a problem as we were catching up with friends. Booked again for the Saturday night, there were 6 of us. Several items not available from the menu. No Caesar salad so asked for ordinary green salad. What came was just a bowl of cress, great if you are a sheep but no substitute for a mixed green salad. The main course took an hour an a quarter to arrive and when it did some of the side dishes were missing and arrived after we had finished our meal. A table of 12 who had booked had waited for well over an hour an a half and only had 6 of their starters. They got up and left, they had been celebrating a wedding anniversary and their night was spoilt.
I visited the Shoulder earlier in the year and posted a review then which was a lot more complimentary but on this occasion found it difficult to find anything positive.
