4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2013

Visited for pub lunch in between Xmas and new year, food was lovely and good value however the service was very slow, yes they were busy and rushed and staff were very polite but ohhh so slow ..... Should perhaps get more staff to assist

We have been coming here for the last six years for our wedding anniversary and always enjoyed until now. The service was poor, they had run out of many things on the menu which meant limited choice especially when staying here meant going to bed dissatisfied. The wine was expensive and cheap tasting. Our room was the peak dale was clean but lacking its usual charm. They had skimped and save themselves a few quid but putting biscuits in a pot by the bed as opposed usual luxury individually wrapped biscuits. The biscuits in the tin will have been fondled by every man and dog staying here in December. The warm Christmassy experience that we usually have at this hotel were lost this year. Very disappointing considering we spent over two hundred pound on one night stay. Never again.

A lovely hotel - set in a blissfully quiet village.
The room was very well appointed - warm and very comfortable. Very well furnished - James Brindley silk curtains - and one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept on!.
The staff were charming and most helpful and professional. Dinner in the restaurant was also very good - albeit the proportions were more Art on a Plate rather than generous! Excellent wine and friendly charming service.
A very enjoyable short break - the only down side were the 11,000 people expected at Chatsworth through the House with the dire Narnia theme - a slow shuffle though endless Christmas decorations towards an overpriced shop.....

This would have been a great trip, and place to stay, due to it being close to Chatsworth, the accommodation was excellent and the service was top class, however the food was not so, the steaks we order were very tough and difficult to cut, when one of the steaks was returned to the chef he's repile was that that type of steak should not be well done, he could have mention to us that in the first place. When we went to pay our bill it got very complicated and the staff found it difficult to work out how to deduct the tough steaks.

Room Tip: The two rooms on the ground floor in the cottage are well appointed and very cosy.

We enjoyed a three night stay at this delightful pub/hotel. The staff was very polite and helpful throughout our stay.
We stayed in a lovely bedroom - upper floor of the cottage across the road, ones of the premium bedrooms. It was quirky, well decorated with a superb spacious bathroom. The view from the bedroom was over the beck, which we could hear gurgling along once the lights were out!
The modern twist to this 17th century building was the restaurant which had been very tastefully decorated with subtle lighting that changed the colour wash on the walls! Very atmospheric!
The food was good; was well presented and hot. It wasn't exceptional but was tasty and of good quality. As a vegetarian, the choice over three days was limited, indeed we ate out one night to avoid repeating a meal. Overall it was worthwhile and being so near to Chatsworth it was a real boon.

Room Tip: Ask for upstairs in the cottage

Very disappointing Sunday lunch. First of all they had no trace of our booking . Food choice good but when it arrived it was no better than average. Neither the duck nor the beef were cooked correctly. Service started of ok then deteriorated. Eventually have up waiting for desert menu and left. Went to Bakewell to fill up at pie shop. Wine prices also extortionate . Would not recommend this place at all
