“My favourite pubstaurant in derbyshire”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2012

Fell in love with this place and every time I sit in there with a glass of amazing wine and great food right next to a roaring log fire, I think to myself.... I wish it would start snowing so we become stranded and have to stop over, perfect!

Peter, Duffield

I wondered if you remember my favourite wine, Gamekeeper Shiraz - you don't seem to stock it any more, would you know where to purchase it please?

Great review thanks! Its certainly been snowing over the last couple of days here in Beeley if you fancy getting stranded ! Regarding the wine if you were to give Oliver a call he could help with the supplier or maybe even get some in for the next time you visit!

“Excellent for a lunch party.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 14, 2012

We arranged this year a lunch party to celebrete my wife's birthday. We had called in the weekend before to make the reservation, and to look at the available areas. We chose an area towards the back in a self contained room which turned out to be ideal. On the day the staff were very welcoming and attentive. Two or three waiters checked on a regular basis to ask if we needed anything, and seemed to be far more sincere than the usual ' Is everything alright?' Food and drinks, and we had quite a wide selection between us were very good, prices ok and the whole restaurant including the toilets were well designed and well maintained in a clean and tidy manner.

“A Day Trip to Chatsworth”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 12, 2012

We thought we would take a day trip to see Chatsworth to see the Christmas trees, it's something we have wanted to do for years but never got around to....more of that visit in another review.

Inevitably lunch time came around and the debate was where to have lunch, out came the trusty Alistair Sawday guide and the sat nav. We arrived here minutes later.

What a find....roaring log fires reasonable beers on tap and a pretty good menu...oh and some good wines available too. We had the Pinot Grigio, which was served slightly chilled. We settled down to study the menu and to observe what our fellow diners were eating. The sandwiches are listed on aboard to the left of the bar, not an extensive selection but be really hungry if you order one - they are huge and come with salad garnish and skinny chips.

We were hungry but not THAT hungry. I chose fish and chips whilst my wife had the starter size Cesar salad. The service was polite and prompt.

I have had fish and chips in many places...who hasn't...the best are in Whitby. For a pub though these were seriously good. The fish was perfectly cooked it simply flaked apart but the batter was lovely, it was crisp and golden brown. The chips however were better still, they must have been thrice cooked...crisp golden brown on the outside whilst soft and fluffy on the inside. I could have done with a slightly larger pot of their home made tartar sauce as it was very good. The mushy peas...well what can one say about mushy peas? They were just fine.

My wife's Cesar salad whilst small was pretty decent for a starter. Large flakes of parmesan, plenty of anchovies, crisp lettuce covered with a lovely piquant dressing.

All in all a very pleasant visit and one I would strongly recommend

“Good choice for a Birthday Lunch”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2012

We decided to go here on the spur of the moment for my husbands birthday we hadn't booked the main part of the restaurant was full so we went into the brasserie. It is very modern with full length windows looking out onto the square. The food was fantastic. We both had the potted shrimp then I had fish and chips, the fish was beautiful and the chips heavenly. My husband had the Duck and finished every morsel the waitress asked if he was going to lick the plate. I will make a point of going here again.

“Lovely food and premises, shame about the waitress.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2012

We had an excellent meal, which whilst pricey, was very enjoyable. The establishment itself is very cozy and has bags of charm and character.
The bad points. Food took a long time to come out and the waitress was about as warm and hospitable as bad case of the flu. Had she smiled her face would have cracked.
Getting the food and ambience right only gets you in the game, its the service with a smile that wins you repeat business.
Lets give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she was just having a bad day, so when or if we return Mr Manager, make sure your staff understand they are in the service industry and that a bad attitude can ruin your reputation! All in all it was a good dining experience though so we'll probably give it another try.
