“Terrible Service, Indifferent Food”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2014

We gathered here one lunchtime for a family gathering and decided to take advantage of the fixed price lunch. From the outset, service was chilly - were to be treated as "cheapskates" for daring to take up a prix fixee offer?

The owner, with dogs in tow, reluctantly took our order, but at no stage checked back how the food was. One of the dishes was salmon and sea bass and one of our party diod not like salmon, thus she wanted sea bass only. When it arrived, we were surprised to see one very small piece of sea bass on her plate - would it have hurt to replace the salmon with a second sea bass fillet? The other meals were adequate, though portions not generous and the quality wholly unmemorable.

This review gets two stars because 1) the service, particularly that from the owner, was non existent; and 2) the owner saw no reason why his dogs should not have free range of the restaurant and, from what I could see, the kitchens. One would hope that in this da and age hygeine would dictate that dogs (yes, I like dogs too) and food do not match in a commercial environment.

The inn looks attractive, but there are other, better options in the town I feel and next time we will avoid it.

“Food great.....sercice needs polishing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2014

Met friends here for a Sunday lunch...within 2 minutes of sitting down three different waiting staff had asked us if we were ready to order!
What was the rush? They served plenty of people after us and we were there at 1.15...but if gave the impression they wanted us processed quickly!
Food ordered and all of us were very pleased, one small point.... if you are going to serve the roast beef so rare...may be worth warning customers...one of us not so keen. Had to request mint sauce and horseradish for mains as if it was unusual.....desserts nice and cheeseboard that two of us shared was pretty good.
Left hanging really once desserts served....no waiting staff bothered with us then to see if we wanted coffee's.....had to go looking at the bar, o,r if and when we wanted the bill.....there is much more to good service than just running the food to the table. They were nice enough but just not trained to anticipate customer's needs.

Would we go back?...yes, if ever in area but plenty of other pub/restaurants to try before a return here would be considered.

“Dinner at The Bell”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2014

We were staying nearby, on a short break, and decided to eat at The Bell, Alresford. A good menu, and although we were told that chips were not an option, the sauteed potatoes more than made up the shortfall! Starters were great and the main courses were really good. We'd go back again!

“Unprofessional staff, poor customer service - nil points”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2014

Living locally, we had enjoyed excellent meals in past years under the previous management and decided to return. We phoned to book a table in the restaurant at 7.00pm on Saturday 19 July. We were asked to arrive for 6.45pm and the restaurant table was confirmed. We arrived at 6.30pm, ordered some drinks but as most of the bar seats were "reserved" we decided to take our table in the restaurant. The waitress showed us to a table in a draughty corridor between the ladies lavatory and the courtyard entrance. When we asked for our table in the restaurant she explained, without apology that this was fully booked!
We decide to leave and eat elsewhere.
It took a full four minutes in an almost empty bar for the awkward French barman to finish loading his till before he would accept payment for the drinks! Customer service - nil points.

“Excellent Lunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2014

Quite the best rare beef baguette I have ever enjoyed, and with a very generous filling of beef.
Busy, even at 2.15pm. friendly service.
