“Going back to Van Wormer Resort!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2012

We're just getting ready to go back to Van Wormer Resort so I googled it to see what enhancements they made to the property since we were there 3 yrs ago. The ratings scared me for a second, just as fast I remembered my brother said it is highly thougt of in that area and my sister just told me... that's where I got the info on the enhancements... she visited (didn't stay there) and couldn't say enough great things about it. I'll give my feed back when I get back staying Feb 4-9, and I'll share pics or our experience there. We wanted to get out of Cabo and we loved VWs. We made such good friends there, and we can't wait to see if some of the same staff are still there. We're thinking... if they are, you better come because this place is gonna 'rock baby'. Suggestons: Los Barriles nearby, or drive West over the mountains to the Pacific and Hotel California. (Note: I had to pick a date below. we actually went Feb 2009.

Room Tip: Let the kids have some freedom don't put them next door. It's safer than home.

The hotel was nice, beautiful pool, beach views, etc. Internet only available in restaurant and common areas. We loved the fancy restaurant, great guacamole and margaritas! The other restaurant had good breakfast options that weren't too pricey. The rooms were okay - beds not so great, but updated bathrooms and clean. The pool was too cold to swim in (January) but we went in the hot tub which was nice. I thought it was a bit overpriced for what you got, but it was one of the nicest hotels in the area so I would probably choose it again. (Oh, the fishing was a total rip off - we got not a single bite, they should have told us only fools try and fish there in January...all we got was a long boat ride. Make sure you go only during peak fishing season. Otherwise save the money and do something else.)

Had a wonderful time. From the room to the food to the fresh Civichi when we shared our catch of the day. What a wonderful time we had!

Room Tip: They wouldn't let me choose an alternate date. We were there at an earlier date. I would return...

If you are looking for a small town Mexico experience with hotel amenities, this is the place for you. Los Barriles is great for fishing, kite-boarding, wind-surfing and just plain relaxing. The beach is NEVER crowded. The hotel rooms are ok, the food quite good and the pools, etc. good. This hotel is locally owned by Mexicans and is worth a visit.

This place is about an hour north of San Jose del Cabo...and about and hour and 1/2 from Cabo San Lucus. It is primarily a resort for sports fishing, but we happened on the place a few years ago while driving and returned for a 3 day stay.

It's located on a quiet bay with beaches that stretch for miles and are largely empty, though the swimming is fine and the beaches wonderful. Just not a lot of people. There isn't much in town, but the food at the resort restaurants is outstanding and cheap...at least the fish and shrimp dishes are. Those were so good we never got past them. Great salads as well.

The rooms are just OK...and the matresses just passable. Everything is clean and neat and functional, but this is not elegant...just OK comfortable. Staff was helpful and friendly and personalble at every turn.

We had a good time. Good place is you want to really get away and have a few VERY QUIET days in the Cabo area...or if you want to fish.

Still one of the better places to stay but REALLY showing it's age. Shower didn't work. AC wouldn't shut off. What would it take to have someone pick up the litter around the place, hire a waiter/tress for the pool or replace the chairs/umbrellas? Don't get me wrong. I have been going there for lots of years. Paying five star prices for a 2star hotel. Pick your boats carefully. The first one we had broke, no refund?? Ended up being directed (by someone else) to a private boat (Marlintini-sp?). Better than expected. Watched some guy get his finger smashed between the boat and dock.... no one seemed to care (at last discussion with him the hotel hadn't said a word-two days later).

I have stayed at hotel palmas de Cortez about 10 times. Although it's true that the hotel is not 5 stars. I usually go there for the fishing which has always been decent. can't believe all these people complaining. Guys this is raw fishing, so stop being such pusses. Catching that giant marlin makes up for all the shortcomings.
