“grand mayan.. YOU MUST READ THIS !!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2008

We have just returned from our week vacation at the Grand Mayan.
Very nice ! but want to tell everybody about our check in experience. After you check in w/ the front desk they send you over to the hostess desk to get a band on your wrist ( you have to have this band on ! ) The girls are very very very nice ! they give you info on the resort that we found very helpful THEN they invite you to do the timeshare breakfast . They offer you 10 % off of your bill at the end of your stay and 40% off of your tours and if you are there on a rci exchange they even offer you a ocean view upgrade !
( IT IS A SCAM !!! ) We were abit concerned about the time because we had our 3 kids w/ us , They told my husband and I they only ask for 90 min and that there has been a change of management. they say whatever then need to say to get you to go !
WELL we went for it and they called us at 7:30 the next morning we meet them at 8;30am and we were in there till 2pm SIX HOURS !!! They pass you from sales person to sales person they do not let you go ! the first guy is great then the 4 others..... it just got nasty ! I have done many of these at other resorts but the grand mayan is so bad it is not worth the savings ! It ruined our first day! yes the whole first day !!! and when we were at the pool talking to some other guest the same thing happened to them ! j
just a warning ! I cannot believe how those people dressed in black and white lie !!!!
Our kids had a blast ! the resort is really nice and has alot to offer .but stay away from the timeshare and do not believe what those hostess say !

Recently my husband and I visited this facility. We were not told that it is under construction, the golf course is dug up, (we brought our clubs) the lazy river is closed and that we would have a 5 storey parking garage to look at instead of the ocean. We were harassed daily by the girls in the lobby claiming to be "hostesses" they are really timeshare. We were warned the presentations are very high pressure and take 4 hours by guests who did the presentation at the hotel and we refused to go. They called and woke us up at 8 am 2 days in a row. A very disappointing trip to say the least. We will never go again.

My husband and I stayed here on our honeymoon from 7/20-7/26. My parents paid for the room for us through one of the owners. They found a website that does this so I can't comment on the price and if it's comparable to the quality but I'm 99% sure it is. The resort is awesome! The room was very clean, large, contemporary, excellent! Had everything we wanted.

Do not be worried by the negative reviews on this site as I was. I don't know what these people are expecting but I have been traveling my whole life and this was one of the best resorts I've stayed at. Pool is awesome. We didn't go to the beach at all but it's not as far as some people said. You can find Mexican food on the resort - Samba has a delicious Mexican plate and I highly recommend Tacos Break which is on your way out of the Mayan "complex". Try the Queso Fundido con Chorizo. My husband has been all over Mexico and loves Mexican food and he said this was one of the best places he's been to.

Staff is very friendly. I recommend trying to speak spanish to everyone - staff, cab drivers, etc. Yes, you will try to get pushed into a time share presentation but say no and be assertive. We actually said we would go and had to put the $20 down but we changed our minds the next morning. When we went down to the desk to get our money back they tried one more time to get us to go so we said we would again (with no intentions to). We went back a 3rd time to get our money back and this time it was no problem. We noticed that the American's are definitely more pushy about the presentation than the Mexicans so look out for that.

The resort is big but we never felt overwhelmed. The beds weren't hard as I read on here too. This is a great resort and I recommend it to anyone!

We have just returned from a week at The Grand Mayan, Nuevo Vallarta. The resort is awesome. We were given the master suite which can sleep 10 people easily thru RCI, which gave us plenty of room for a party of 3. Activities for kids upon my observation is never ending. Personally, we did not utilize it since my 10 year old wanted different activities with me and my 13 year old just wanted to be left alone, but I see the activity staff very much engaged with the children and the children seemed happy and content. The resort is huge; multiple pools such as the lazy pool, wave, activities pool, Etc. would be enough to keep you occupied and relaxed and add the beach with soft sand and friendly waves. The resort is far from the "centro". Very expensive to eat inside the resort's restaurants and honestly the food weren't great. We did a lot of room service which became very convenient for us and we went to Walmart to buy some groceries. To get to Walmart, it cost $14 each way. To get to PV center, you can either take a cab which will cost $16 each way or take the bus labeled "ATM" to Walmart for 120 pesos ($1.20) and from there take another bus to the "centro" for 50 pesos (.50 c). We did not do any timeshare presentations...not worth saving 40% for activities and 10% of total resort bill, my time is more precious than attending and getting aggravated by the reps. Be careful at the airport because you will be attacked by the timeshare sharks. The only negative remarks I could think of are the following: resort is out of nowhere, their mini grocery stores are expensive and the food inside the resort is more expensive than the US. The cleanliness of the place is superb, the staff are so courteous and helpful. Please do not forget to tip the housekeepers...they do an amazing job. For activities, we did the "El Eden" canopy tour and the Vallarta adventure dolphin swim, both were good but be prepared for spending mucho dinero for these activities. We had a great time at the Grand Mayan, but next time we will book a hotel closer to the city.

  • Liked — The comfortness of the room and the excellent service of the staff.
  • Disliked — The location is not convenient at all.

We just returned from a 7 night stay and had a fabulous time. The best part about this trip was the people. Whether it was the staff at the hotel, local cab drivers and restaurateurs, and other guests (including may Mexicans that were vacationing), all were very friendly and fun.
Some quick highlights.
Grand Mayan: beautiful resort with many activities for guests. Our day primarily consisted of beach (body surfing and beach volleyball), activities pool (swim up bar, volleyball, ping pong, basketball, water polo, pool table and bingo – the activities staff is terrific), wave pool, lazy river, and water slide. The room was spacious and view spectacular. The only complaint is the bed was a little hard (though we heard one of the other 5 buildings had no water for a full day.)
Food: decent food in the resort with incredible food outside. Most lunches were at the pool (Samba restaurant). We did enjoy our one meal at Tramanto (get the snapper.) Outside, every restaurant we went to was great - whether it was 5 star (Café de Artistes – 5 course feast which was one of the best meals I have ever had), 4 star (La Palapa – best location, right on the beach), 3 star (Las Lagunes (the whole fish is awesome), Guidos (great chicken dishes), Nopal Beach (walking distance from resort, the owner Eddie is great and the fresh guac and tacos were the best), Claudios (Octopus was awesome – only $3 cab ride from resort).
Timeshare presentation: promised a 90 minute tour which lasted 5 and half hours (though over 90 minutes was at breakfast at Green Break) – this was bad, though the people we met were friendly and provided a lot of great info on PV and things to do. The gifts though were good (upgraded to ocean view room, $50 golf, $45 massage, $100 credit and 10% off purchases at the hotel.) We didn’t buy as we thought the $58k price for was too pricey for Mexico…especially since we bought our timeshare in Aruba, on the resale market at just $5k.
While we are not ones that like to visit the same city more than once, I would consider coming back to PV and the GM. Here is a link to some pictures. http://picasaweb.google.com/shawndoe/080816_PuertoVallarta02

Nice resort. Entry is great. Big swimming pools. Lazy River is great. Small Train to ride and boats to take you to other hotels on Mayan property. Good stuff for kids and teens.Rooms good. Food expensive (eat at the Nopal Beach Rest.( Brkfst, lunch, dinner), short walk from the resort, make a left at the Sea Garden and walk to the Marina, NBR on right near water, great food and great price, ask for Eddie (owner). Time Share presentation is ridiculously long. Resort will book tours- PV, Canopy, Yelapa are good. Beach is nice but not traditional white sand. Have bug spray (mosquitoes) if you're out past dusk. Staff is friendly and helpful.

Our family stayed at the Grand Mayan Nuevo over the Thanksgiving holiday last year. It was one of most memorable experiences! The Grand offers a variety of activities for all ages. We have booked another trip for this coming Nov. and were planning to host a traditional Thanksgiving Day feast for our family... BUT I can't remember if the one bedroom suite with the kitchen has an oven. If you have recently been or remember if there is an oven and not just a stove, can you please reply. I greatly appreciate your time. Thank you, Julie
