This was our second stay here in 5 years. Since we stayed here last, the hotel around the Grand Mayan has transformed amazingly into a top notch resort. The Grand Mayan used to be the high end place to stay on the property - now it is lower end compared with the Grand Bliss and Grand Luxe. Overall, you end up with a massive lush resort. We love this because you can get out and walk and enjoy the property. Lovely boardwalks everywhere. And amazing foliage.
Best things about the Grand Mayan: the hotel remains in top condition over time with sparkeling clean, well appointed public areas and rooms. The rooms hadn't aged a bit since we stayed here 5 years ago. Well maintained and appointed. We stayed in a 2 bedroom suite and it is possibly the perfect accomodation for a family of 4. Basic kitchen and fridge, great dining area/living room and 2 full hotel room size bedrooms/bathrooms. We did not have an ociean view room -- but we did not expect one. Half the rooms face the ocean -- other half face inland/staff parking garage. If you are RCI you will not have an ocean view room. You pretty much have to be an owner at this timeshare to have ocean view - OR - sit through the time share breakfast (more later...). We weren't either so we didn't expect ocean view and therefore were not disappointed. More on the room -- beds - firm and perfectly comfortable. Pillows were huge, but we found some better ones in the closets. Kitchen - basic but fine. We ate breakfast in and snacks and didn't need more. Wifi - about $95 per week for 2 devices. Wifi quality was good and we didn't feel ripped off because we thought it was $95/device -- again expectation setting.
Food at the resort - not as expensive as top quality hotels or Hawaii, but not cheap either. We found the resort food to be blah and boring. Good portions, Ok quality. We ate at many of the restaurants over the time we were here. We liked Blue Fish at the Grand Luxe the best. Grand Mayan restaurants were too American and a bit boring. From our past trip here, we knew many of the Marina restaurants were more fun and better value. So here is how you get off the property easily -- walk down the beach to the Mayan Sea Garden hotel (4th down). It is part of the same hotel group, so you can walk through the lobby and out onto the street. Right outside is a more affordable convenience store. Walk 2 blocks to the left and there are a bunch of more authentic, fun, affordable restaurants to choose from. In our opinion, the worst part of the Grand Mayan experince is the effort they have made to deter guests from leaving the property. They make you walk/ride a shuttle and take a taxi to the marina rather than letting you walk down the path next to the Grand Mayan that leads straight to the marina. This is super frustrating if you have stayed here in the past and could just walk out the door and get there easily. Our advice -- just walk the beach! And grab some food at the affordable conveince store on the way home.
Timeshare presentation -- If you spend any time on this site you should know that you will get the hard sell to attend "the breakfast" and that it will take about 6 hours before they let you go and give you the promised discounts. We grabbed our bracelets from check in and were nearly on the elevator before they chased us down for the timeshare hard sell. We said no thank you about 6 times and then were free for the rest of the week. Not a single phone call.
Best surprise of the week - the gym facilties are terrific! Good variety of cardio machines and huge weight room with lots of equipment. If you enjoy working out, this is a great hotel gym with good quality gear. Guys mopped the treadmills when we were done - that's how clean it was.
New Plaza shopping area onsite -- OK grocery store for basics but expensive. Coffee and bakery were really good though! Very high end options.
Pools and beach great as always! Love the lazy river and wave pool. Great family pool area. Beach was good for boogie boarding during our visit too.
Overall hotel remains high quality, clean, and stylish. Food is a bit blah. If they could bring it up a knotch and keep food prices constant, it would be great.
