“2nd Stay - mostly great but a few annoyances”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2014

This was our second stay here in 5 years. Since we stayed here last, the hotel around the Grand Mayan has transformed amazingly into a top notch resort. The Grand Mayan used to be the high end place to stay on the property - now it is lower end compared with the Grand Bliss and Grand Luxe. Overall, you end up with a massive lush resort. We love this because you can get out and walk and enjoy the property. Lovely boardwalks everywhere. And amazing foliage.

Best things about the Grand Mayan: the hotel remains in top condition over time with sparkeling clean, well appointed public areas and rooms. The rooms hadn't aged a bit since we stayed here 5 years ago. Well maintained and appointed. We stayed in a 2 bedroom suite and it is possibly the perfect accomodation for a family of 4. Basic kitchen and fridge, great dining area/living room and 2 full hotel room size bedrooms/bathrooms. We did not have an ociean view room -- but we did not expect one. Half the rooms face the ocean -- other half face inland/staff parking garage. If you are RCI you will not have an ocean view room. You pretty much have to be an owner at this timeshare to have ocean view - OR - sit through the time share breakfast (more later...). We weren't either so we didn't expect ocean view and therefore were not disappointed. More on the room -- beds - firm and perfectly comfortable. Pillows were huge, but we found some better ones in the closets. Kitchen - basic but fine. We ate breakfast in and snacks and didn't need more. Wifi - about $95 per week for 2 devices. Wifi quality was good and we didn't feel ripped off because we thought it was $95/device -- again expectation setting.

Food at the resort - not as expensive as top quality hotels or Hawaii, but not cheap either. We found the resort food to be blah and boring. Good portions, Ok quality. We ate at many of the restaurants over the time we were here. We liked Blue Fish at the Grand Luxe the best. Grand Mayan restaurants were too American and a bit boring. From our past trip here, we knew many of the Marina restaurants were more fun and better value. So here is how you get off the property easily -- walk down the beach to the Mayan Sea Garden hotel (4th down). It is part of the same hotel group, so you can walk through the lobby and out onto the street. Right outside is a more affordable convenience store. Walk 2 blocks to the left and there are a bunch of more authentic, fun, affordable restaurants to choose from. In our opinion, the worst part of the Grand Mayan experince is the effort they have made to deter guests from leaving the property. They make you walk/ride a shuttle and take a taxi to the marina rather than letting you walk down the path next to the Grand Mayan that leads straight to the marina. This is super frustrating if you have stayed here in the past and could just walk out the door and get there easily. Our advice -- just walk the beach! And grab some food at the affordable conveince store on the way home.

Timeshare presentation -- If you spend any time on this site you should know that you will get the hard sell to attend "the breakfast" and that it will take about 6 hours before they let you go and give you the promised discounts. We grabbed our bracelets from check in and were nearly on the elevator before they chased us down for the timeshare hard sell. We said no thank you about 6 times and then were free for the rest of the week. Not a single phone call.

Best surprise of the week - the gym facilties are terrific! Good variety of cardio machines and huge weight room with lots of equipment. If you enjoy working out, this is a great hotel gym with good quality gear. Guys mopped the treadmills when we were done - that's how clean it was.

New Plaza shopping area onsite -- OK grocery store for basics but expensive. Coffee and bakery were really good though! Very high end options.

Pools and beach great as always! Love the lazy river and wave pool. Great family pool area. Beach was good for boogie boarding during our visit too.

Overall hotel remains high quality, clean, and stylish. Food is a bit blah. If they could bring it up a knotch and keep food prices constant, it would be great.

Room Tip: Higher up is better on both sides of the building as you will have better view and less noise.

Several families joined us to go to this resort, and like the other Grand Mayan properties, it is stunning with lots of pools and well-appointed rooms. There were several drawbacks, we all agreed (4 families give this feedback).

1. The size of the resort - it is enormous. The owner of the property has amassed 31,000 acres and intends to develop all of it. Since we have kids who are old enough to run around on their own, it was often very difficult to find them. We spent so much of our time looking for each other those first few days, until we found favorite spots to agree on as our hangout or meeting place. It went both ways - often our kids were trying to find us, too. It was exhausting. The pools are heavily landscaped so you can't see from between or around them, nor can you see the beach from the pool. The walkways wind all over the place so you have to walk great distances to get around the pools or to the beach.

2. Very far from Puerto Vallarta. They make it hard for you to leave the resort, seeming to prefer that you spend all your money on their property. They have 17 restaurants, but you have to make reservations with the concierge in the am - who wants to decide dinner plans in the am, especially on vacation? One night we walked all over the resort looking for a restaurant that could take us. After walking into 5 restaurants, we finally found a 6th that could take us at 10 pm. It takes expensive cab rides to go anywhere - (are prices fixed by the resort?) Some renegade guests found out how to get to the "city bus" which will take you into PV for only 2 dollars, but the usual routine is to take a cab. Our cab into old PV for dinner cost 40 dollars each way! Wow - can't do that too often. Then we found a way to leave the resort by beach to eat in the nearby marina restaurants (Eddies is GREAT). We were told the GM owner is going to build a wall on the beach so visitors won't be able to leave the GM property by the beach anymore, and he's relocating the main entrance to the property so you can't leave and access the city bus - very discouraging. We like to explore Mexico when we travel there - some of our best memories are finding quaint little villages and pretty beaches - not just stay on a resort property. This resort was like a land-based cruise ship in this way - a carefully staged experience and they control all your access to the outside world.

3. Prices on site at the resort are very high - food, tennis, golf, wi-fi, taxis. A simple hamburger at their casual beach-side restaurant cost 16 dollars, and it didn't even come with french fries (which cost extra). A simple dinner for three (one a child) without drinks was 100 dollars - way too much. Staff told us about a free show each night at the Santuario at check-in; when we went there, they charged a cover charge unless you ordered drinks. When they tell you they'll give you 10% off your bill to go on a sales presentation, they only take 10% off of the food and drink portion of our bill. Everyone in our group of families mentioned feeling "nickel and dimed" by the high prices and all the extra charges.

Yes, the Grand Mayan is a beautiful resort and has everything you can imagine. But go prepared to spend, walk walk walk, and then walk some more, and not see much of Mexico outside resort borders.

Room Tip: A confusing fact is that all three Grand Mayan buildings are Building #3! What's with that? They...

Our recent trip to Nuevo Vallarta was among our best vacations ever. Pools with lazy river, a beach to walk for hours, beautiful gardens, umpteen great restaurants, golf, tennis and other activities all add up to a great time. The staff are all exceptionally friendly and helpful. Then there is the spa, and did I mention Margaritas in the pool bar?

Very pleasant experience all round. Very knowlegible staff and helpful in all respects. Great variety of food and restaurants with no pressure on choices or time to finish. A little pricey though. The site is truly exceptional and green with a variety of native plants and birds and many walking trails. Beautiful beach and close to the marina. Our contact Members Craig Rock and Camilla were a great source of information and we had an interesting time discussing our mutual trips around the world. Looking forward to returning next year. Great place with a great variety of things to do Huge area for recreation and activities. Many different restaurants, but a little expensive to eat out all the time Employees are very friendly and helpful. Checking is is time consuming and frustrating sometimes as you may not get what you ask for. We have owned and upgraded several times for a lot of years and always enjoy our stay here. Claudia Stabel was very helpful to us and we appreciate her time and efforts.

In three years there has been a great makeover. Beautiful bridges connecting the buildings if you are a walker, effective ecologically friendly on site transportation if you prefer to be driven. A new wonderful bakery, deli and shopping area at The Plaza. As always, great food and drink service poolside and at the restaurants. Downtown is visitor friendly with more bay side sculpture and the new pedestrian mall. Only problem this year, the beach was only good for boogy ( sp) boarding not swimming. Looking forward to being there again.

We joined the Mayan Group last year while in San Jose del Cabo. When we arrived in Nuevo Vallarta for a week stay (for our 10-year wedding anniversary), we met with Imaria Agboh who was our customer relations rep. She was extremely helpful from check-in to check-out, especially after learning that our purchase was different than it had been explained to us in Cabo. She made sure that the right levels of management helped us out, and by day 3, we were in our upgraded room and very happy. She also checked in with us every day to ensure we were having a pleasant stay, as well as making sure we returned home safely. She also provided our family with vouchers to the Mexican Folkoric beach party. She understands what it means to go the extra mile, and being in client relations myself, I am a tough critic. I hope that everyone is lucky enough to meet her while at the Mayan resorts. It's a beautiful piece of property! Great trip.

Room Tip: Most rooms facing the ocean also view the pools, but even the jungle views are lovely. Ask for floor...
