Stayed at GM second week of October. We were a bit concerned due to weather reports we had been checking. Nothing to worry about, the weather was beautiful in the upper 80's. We requested a suite in the higher floor and received it. The one bedrooms are great. Room kept very clean. The beds are hard as others have stated but it was fine for us. it seems like the resort was gearing up for the tourist season so many of the restaurants were closed but we got to enjoy Samba Restaurant since they re-opened the day before we left. Great breakfast buffet and it costs about $20 dollars per person. We were disappointed that the lazy river was closed for maintenance for most of our week stay, but was re-opened the day before we left and got to enjoy it. We heard that from September through mid-October they do maintenance to the pools to prepare for the November tourist season. The rest of the pools were open and we got to enjoy them. The benefits of arriving before the heavy season is that we had no problems finding lounge chairs. Pool bar service was great. The waiters are always checking if you need a drink or want to order food. Tip them generously, they work hard to keep you comfortable. There seemed to be a lot of activities going on for kids and adults though we did not participate since we chose to just relax by the pool.
Beach water though murky due to the river nearby was incredibly warm. Tons of palapas to keep the sun out after a dip in the water. Not too many people trying to sell us stuff. A simple "no gracias" sufficed for those that approached us. Had lunch at "Oye Mulata" at GM and club sandwich was huge and good by husband ordered a hamburger and he felt in was mediocre.
I agree with other reviewers that the new taxi entrance is crazy. Spoke to a number of cab drivers and they are also unhappy with this new process for the Mayan resorts. Last year our taxi driver was able to deliver us to the front door of the GM. This new system has you dropped off at a taxi depot inside the resort where your bags are taken and kept until you call them to be delivered to your assigned room after you have checked-in. Then you have to take about a six minute walk to the Santuario where golf carts with drivers are available to take you to your hotel. If we had not been so tired we would have walked to the GM which is another five minutes walking distance from the Santuario.
Check-in was OK except they always send you to the timeshare people even though we informed the check-in clerk we were not interested in the timeshare presentation. They use putting your key bracelet on as an excuse. We made it clear to the lady assigned to us that we were not interested and that we went through the same thing the year before. She tried to convince us for about 15 minutes and at that point my husband flatly told her that we were still not interested and we were feeling stressed and such pushiness was impacting our vacation. She mellowed out and said she would be giving us a call once we settled down to invite us to the breakfast. We were called every day a couple of times a day and did not respond until later in the week since one night the phone just kept ringing. A ploy from the timeshare people. We believed it since last year we did receive a $300 credit which was great.
Since most restaurants at GM were closed we went to Eddy's nearby. Food OK but great smoothies. Nopalitos at Paradise Village was a disappointment. It must have been what we ordered. Great experience at Sonora Sur. had a great time picking the piece of meat we wanted. Very reasonable prices and good food.
Took a taxi tour to Buceria, Sayulita and Punta Mita. Real enjoyable trip. Water a lot more aqua color as you would see in the Caribbean.
Casino small but a good number of machines. Went during the day and not too many people, I think it will change once they get their liquor license.
One tip: if you want to avoid the whole new taxi set-up. The north entrance is still open. Take a10 minute walk to the taxi area and you can get a taxi right away. They are right across from the OXXO Store.
Very enjoyable trip!
