“nice place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2012

I have stayed there 3 times over the years and had the pleasure in like 2004 of staying there when it was brand new. I was there November 2011 and it is still great as i had a great view of ocean and sunset and you get a jacuzzi in your master bedroom amd a secluded pool on your porch. And the food is always good especially the desserts. And the lazy rived and pool are nicetoo.

We are owners who stayed Oct 27-Nov 10 for the first visit since joining in 2010. This mega resort is drop dead gorgeous, professionally run, immaculate, with we'll trained staff. Love it! Food is good, and there is a medium sized, modern supermarket in nearby Paradise Village that is served by a free area shuttle within short walking distance. Decent prices there make a cab to Walmart unnecessary. Beautifully landscaped tropical grounds conceal the many high rises and lend a sense of privacy.
Unfortunately, Puerto Vallarta is overrun by timeshare salespeople who swarm like gnats. They do not take NO for an answer, follow and cling. "Where are you from?" BEWARE

The local bus stop is surrounded by these pests. They try to be helpful and we DID get scammed by a pair of smooth con artists representing Villa del Palmar who sold us a City/Botanical Garden tour with Tami Tours that was not what we were described. They tried to collect more money from us when we showed up, claiming that we did not pay in full. I lost my temper big time and t his spoiled the final day of our vacation.

Same experience at the Malecon. Awful, unable to walk anywhere without getting approached. You will run a gauntlet exiting the airport terminal as well.

Puerto Vallarta is lovely, but I cannot recommend it because you cannot leave your resort without a constant hassle from timeshare reps.

First, I would like to say that overall we had a really enjoyable week because we try to take a positive view of things. The staff at the Grand Mayan were always very polite but you could tell that their hands were tied by the rules of the almighty timeshare. Do some research before you go about timeshares. We were really not quite prepared, even though we were warned in advance, for the barrage of timeshare recruiters at the airport and the attitude of the management at the Grand Mayan. When you arrive at the PV airport, DO NOT get into a car with anyone until you absolutely know for sure that they are your correct ride. The Grand Mayan will arrange for a free ride for you (one way only) from the airport to the resort as long as you call a week ahead to the concierge and arrange it. Make sure you do that! And really, once you get to the Grand Mayan, if they realize that you are truly NOT interested in buying into their property, i.e. if you refuse offers of the so-called breakfast which is code for "timeshare presentation" then they just really don't care about you. It's a different experience than that of a hotel where they try to make you happy. If you're not buying into the whole timeshare experience, then the Grand Mayan doesn't really care if you return so where's their incentive to give you top service? This is obviously not a good turn of events for the owners at the Grand Mayan and they should be warned that the "guests" who are paying to stay there will gradually stop going if they are subjected to pressure and almost blackmail (that is truly how we felt) by not giving us an ocean view room unless we agreed to attend the breakfast. Seriously. They told us there were no ocean view rooms, HOWEVER, if we were willing to attend this wonderful breakfast and take a "tour" of the facilities then perhaps they could find a "promotional suite" on the ocean side for us. Wow. On the bright side, the suite we had which was the Grand Master Suite with two full bedroom/bath units either side of the large living area, was lovely even with the so-so view. Plunge pool on the deck was great. The resort is very clean and beautifully kept. The pools and Lazy River are excellent. Happy Hour is 11 to 1 every day with drinks 2 for 1 (not half price for one; you order one, they bring you two LOL.) Plus the pool bar has a special drink of the day that changes each day. We didn't try any of the restaurants on site but loved Guido's which is a 10 minute walk away. We also liked Eddie's for breakfast. The Internet connection was very weak or non-existent (again, their concern was less than overwhelming) and you cannot take coolers to the pool or beach. You can take an insulated shoulder bag, beach bag, or purse (go figure) but no coolers which is what we had so that was frustrating. Their explanation of people leaving garbage on the beach didn't make sense... Many of the staff did not speak English but they were very warm and gracious and we always made ourselves understood so that was fine. All things considered, we would not go back to the Grand Mayan since we expect to be treated like the paying CUSTOMERS that we are, and will give our holiday dollars instead to a hotel that cares about our concerns.

Room Tip: Ask when you make your booking for an ocean view room but don't expect to get one if you are not...

The Grand Mayan is a spectacular resort complete with a network of swimming pools, activities, and located within walking distance of the ocean. I found the resort to be overwhelming with over priced food ($15.00 Hamburgers, $25.00 buffets) and limited restaurants. And beware because the place is crawling with time share sales people, sharply dressed, polished, and ready to hook you in. Certainly stay at the hotel for the experience but head to downtown Puerto Vallarta via the bus (13 pesos) or cab (200 pesos). Look for the McDonalds and use that as a starting point for food. Across from it are a couple of local cafes, up the hill from it is Barcelona Tapas, Pipi's. And for desert (or dinner), head down the street to La Cigale....yummy! Also, within walking distance of the hotel near the marina is a small cafe called E-Studio. Very reasonable and delicious!

You could not want for a better place to spend a vacation. The Grand Mayan is certainly luxury and I cannot say enough about the staff. The room service, the waiters, the maids and especially the activity staff are all top notch. This location is probably one of their largest and there is something there for everyone. While they were fully booked you could always find a place in the shade to sit and there were so many chaise loungers on the beach there was never a problem. We love it there but one caveat. DO NOT accept a free breakfast and a 10% reduction in you bill for attending the presentation. You will loose a day of your vacation. The breakfast might end up costing you thousands. They are very skilled at pushing you toward upgrading your facility. You start out a a perfectly nice place and then find out there are certain amenities that are off limits to you. OK, so you trade up to the Grand Mayan but the trouble is they keep moving the goal line. There are always plenty of people who, for them, money is not object so they trade up and once more you feel like the poor relations. This is a sales tactic and don't let it fool you. It is perfectly alright to say, "No thank you" when asked if you would like to attend a presentation. They will offer day trips, a bill reduction, a spa treatment, etc. but we advise not to accept. Enjoy your vacation and the beautiful Grand Mayan and be satisfied with that. You don't need to hob nob with the money bags crowd, who by the way are not having the fun that is supplied by the Grand Mayan.

Room Tip: Naturally everyone wants to look out at the ocean but that is not possible. I do think if you are an...

We had a two bedroom unit at the Grand Mayan. Amazing property with a hard sell approach. We booked into the time share presentation not just due to the pressure they put upon you at check in (which they did) but because we actually were interested in their program. Skipping ahead through the mandatory at length nicities and breakfast to get to business, we made an offer (this is the very condused version to this point) - they wouldn't accept the offer without my husbands drivers license and credit card. When the offer inevitably came back to the table, it came back without the identification. When we asked for it back instead we got another salesman with another pitch, which we weren't the least bit interested in. We asked again for the identification and basically played nice in the sandbox until we got the ID back. Our main timeshare guy actually said "we're cloning it as we speak".....not so funny. When we got the ID back, we asked to be escorted back to our resort (we were taken to the Grand Bliss next door)....instead we had some terse woman insist we sign a release that we were waiving our rights to some class action suit through RCI because they had made us a counter offer that we wouldn't accept (i know this sounds convulted indeed it was). I lost it at this point, and swiftly left the area indicating I wouldn't be signing ANYTHING. Our old, lets call him the breakfast salesman caught up with us and indicated he would take us now (finally) to where we would get the Rythms of the Night tickets we were promised. Instead he took us somewhere ELSE where we had an older gentlemen at another round table. We left again. Breakfast salesman catches up with us again and actually gives us hell for making him look bad. His words. SERIOUSLY ??? REALLY ??? OMG !!! This guy was from Pennsylvania, so no language or customs barriers there. Couldn't believe it. Called the credit card company and put them on alert. We now have to monitor my husbands credit profile through the credit bureau for any funny goings on for who knows how long. The staff back at the resort just hang their heads when you mention the "sales presentation".

Wow, that said, if you are booked to go, definitely GO.....definitely AVOID THE PRESENTATION AT ALL COSTS.

Too bad this review had to take up so much space with negativity, certainly the resort was a delight if I hadn't felt like I should be watching my back for the rest of the trip.

Room Tip: Ocean view impossible without being an owner. Don't sweat it though most of the views are still...

The Mayan properties are expansive and have everything you could want for your vacation if you are willing to travel in betwen properties. We went with a group of friends and had a great time. Although we all booked through the same website and paid the same price some in our group had an ocean front room.
The lazy river and the water slide were the highlight of our time there, the pool area can't be beat. The restaraunts are nice and with so many you can easiy find something for everyone.
The rooms are avaerage, but the ammenities are full size and the bath tubs are all jacuzzi.
