Well I am not the person to write reviews but Im so upset for the money we had spent on this disaster. PROS....the weather was wonderful and the bartenders were great for the most part. CONS....upon checkin that took a very long time we got our room key. The room smelled soooooo bad of mold I could not even think of staying. They did relocate us to another room but the TV did not work and the shower/tub did not drain. They moved us again. After settleing in after an awful meal at the buffet (STEER CLEAR) I awoke to my husband yelling I looked and there was a roach on the bedside table. I was fuming. Called down to the front desk told them what the problem was and the sent a gentlemen up who did not speek a lick of english with a can of raid. I just started to cry wanted to leave and go home. After my husband had a few words with the front desk we were moved again. No real problems with this room but that all the rooms a very outdated and all have some type of oder. The food at the restaurants is just OK. The swimup bars are falling apart. There was tons of kids. I must say that if anything its a family resort. I Will never go back to this resort NEVER. My husband and I take 2 trips a year and from my point of view this is at best a 2.5 star hotel. Hope that my review was helpful.

We just got back from the Marival Resorts and Suites on August 19th. First off, I don't know what the reviewers that posted here have been smokin' but we did not experience ANY bad attitudes from staff, bad food, bad rooms, etc.! I have come to the conclusion that the people that have previously posted here that made the horrible comments about Marival, those are the people that will never be satisfied with anything. If you are expecting a luxury, 5,000.00 a night suite, then pay 5,000.00 a night! The Marival was a great place for the money spent. The staff was more than helpful and the food was superb, even in the buffet restaurant. When you have to make food for that many people, keep in tasty and hot, they get an A+ from me! The ala carte restaurants were wonderful, and the staff member was very nice in helping my husband make the reservations when we got there. I did submit a reservation via email to the resort and they did get it and we did get the reservation but they couldn't send me a response due to email issues they were having last week. The grounds were beautiful and well maintained and clean. The pools were outstanding and the bar service great! We brought our own large 32 oz. plastic thermal mugs for our beers and they were the hit of the beach between the bartenders and other vacationers, they wanted to know where we got them! The bartenders had no problem filling our mugs up to the top with beer or whatever we wanted. Even the people that were "hawkers" with their "quality junk" were just a riot. We found one of the guys named "Gus" that was selling statues, he was way too funny. Look up "Gus" on the beach selling statues and tell him the man and lady from Wisconsin that talked to him about Brett Favre says "hi" !!! We had a wonderful time and the Marival made it a great experience. The only drawback I would have to say was the timeshare vultures. We knew they would nab us at the airport just by reading the other reviews here, but we had no idea where they were located. Well, I'll tell you. They have a big room through doors after you collect your luggage and they are all dressed in white. They are standing around waiting to grab you, will give you a line that that they are from your travel company. THEY ARE NOT! Pass by them and just say NO! Your ride to the hotel is beyond that room, through the glass doors leading outside! My husband got suckered into making an appt. with one of those guys who misrepresented himself and I kept saying no, I am not going and he said "oh come on, we get a free excusion". To make a long story short, we found out, they want you to come out of the hotel separately, they will take you in separate taxis and keep you until you say yes to buying a timeshare, all day maybe! They reneg on the excursions too. Needless to say we did not show up at the appt. the next morning and the guy actually had the nerve to call our hotel room, telling the front desk that he was calling about our lost luggage! He was relentless! My phone rang about 6 different times before I picked it up, thinking maybe there was an emergency at home. When he said his name, I hung up on the dude! Yikes, they are bad! Don't fall for it! They also have concierge service at the hotel as well that sell vacation packages and try to talk you into a 90 minute presentation and you get excursion tickets but we didn't do that either, no thanks! We had talked to another couple and they were talked into the presentation, and they actually had kept them for 3 hours! They ended up saying no until the very last minute when they ended up buying a small vacation package just so they could leave! Other than the timeshare issues, it was wonderful! I recommend the area of Neuvo Vallarta as well, 20 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta, as its cleaner and the beach is wonderful. We took a 4 mile walk and the beach was as smooth as silk. You could have walked all the way to Puerto Vallarta from where we were if you wanted to! I highly recommend Marival!

To start off I am comparing this to All-inclusives at Sandals Jamaica (Negril and Dunns River) and Aventura Spa by Playa Del Carmen. I went with my wife and some friends (no kids) for a graduation trip after she finished her MBA.

The stay was very average. It had some nice aspects to it but over-all I wouldn't rate it as a 4* hotel. A topical assessment:

Architecture:
Very nice in some places. Very drab in others. Some of the restaurants were very elegant and beautiful. The lobby areas were very well done. The rest of the hotel was average.

Cleanliness:
The hotel was fairly clean. They did spray our room for bugs one day (we didn't have bugs so I guess it was preventative). I was a little put off by that but over-all it seemed clean. Except the kiddy pool areas, but I guess there's not much they can do about that.

Clientele:
There were a LOT of locals staying there. At least half. So everything had to be said in 2 languages. There were also a LOT of kids. A lot of local kids running around. The whole place is very family oriented. If I were to put a percentage on it I would say at least half of the hotel was locals with kids. This is not really what we were going for when we booked.

Pools:
The main pool was over-run by kids and families. This had a swim up bar. The 2nd pool was less kids but still a lot. The "Adults Only" pool with signs clearly marked only had a few kids. I only had drinks ruined a few times by kids jumping in next to me. The Adults only pool was the only one that didn't have a swim up bar. Tell me how much sense that makes.

Drinks/Bar:
The drinks over-all were pretty bad. This is compared to what I considered a pretty good selection from Aventura Spa and Sandals. The bar tenders had some kind of generic "Alcohol" that came out of the fountain drink gun that they would use unless you specified. We guessed it was Vodka, but they would put it in everything unless you asked. The bartenders were not very knowledgeable in making drinks so you better know your ingredients. Also the service was SLOW. It would take an average of 20 minutes or so to get a drink. I would order 2 at a time. The bars were all understaffed, and we were in the less crowded part of the resort. The martini area next to the restaurants actually had some good stuff with bartenders that knew their stuff. I had Grey Goose every night with dinner.

Food:
This was one of the better parts of the stay. The food was between good and very good. The lasagna at the Italian Restaurant was close to, if not the best I've ever had. Over-all I was pleased with the food. A friend and I both got Montezuma's Revenge during the trip but we were only 2/8 that did. So if you have a weak stomach I'm not sure the water is filtered enough.

Beach:
The beach had pretty good surf every day so a lot of the water sports weren't available (kayaking, sailing, etc). I'm not sure if it was because it was storm season but the water was very brown and cloudy. It wasn't worth it to Snorkel or Scuba, we didn't even try. You couldn't see but maybe 6 inches. The sand was pretty nice on the beach area and we had fun body surfing and boogie boarding.

We decided to go on family vacation here because we found a fabulous deal through Funjet. We are a family of 4...parents, and two girls in their 20's. We really had a great time, but there are a few things you should be aware of.

First off, the hotel is nice. I read a few reviews that said the resort is huge, but I thought it was kind of small compared to some others I stayed at. We skipped the timeshare info, but they do try to pressure you into attending. I also thought all the staff was very nice. We did not encounter any rude staff like others have complained about. Yes, a lot of them speak spanish, but you are in Mexico. Buff up on your spanish skills a little, and you'll be fine. Most of all, treat them with respect and you'll receive the same. If you want to be waited on hand and foot, shell out the dough and go somewhere else.

Rooms: The rooms were clean, and we had new towels and drinks (including water) every day. They keep the grounds clean as well. Our first room had a very tricky lock, so we asked for it to be fixed. Fixing it consisted of a man coming to our room and showing us how to unlock the door. He would jiggle the key in the lock for a couple minutes until it would open, and then he would look at us. It was actually kind of funny, but we did not want to fiddle with a ten-
minute jiggling session every time we entered our room. The front desk was very accomodating and let us switch rooms the next day. Both rooms we were in had a nice view of the pool and the ocean. You should also pack an iron, because they don't have them in the rooms. Also, if you want a safe, you have to pay $10/day. You will also get a towel card to exchange for a clean beach towel every day. It will cost $30 to replace if you have a missing towl, which I thought was pretty steep compared to other resorts. However, I didn't hear of anyone getting their towels stolen while staying here.

Pools: They have several pools, including an adults only pool, an activity pool, a children's pool, and also a separate pool with slides and toys for kids. There are activities going on throughout the day around the activity pool if you want to join in, and one of the pools has a swim-up bar.

Beach: We spent most of our time at the beach. The beach was clean, and the water was warm. You couldn't really see into the water, so if you don't like things bumping into your legs without knowing what they are, I don't recommend. The view on the beach was great though, with the mountains surrounding the area. You can check out boogie boards at the beach stand, which I highly recommend. We had a great time! There seemed to be more creatures in the water here than in the Caribbean. Several people got stung by jellyfish, and one day we couldn't go in the water due to a large amount of stingrays. Also, a shark tested me out one day (I had a bruise), but decided not to eat me. Yay!:) (He wasn't that big...about 2-3 feet long.) So, just a heads up. Also, there is a steady stream of vendors on the beach, but if you tell them you're not interested, they don't pressure you. We never had a hard time finding a spot for our things, either. There really wasn't as much reserving of the chairs as there is at other resorts.

Food: Here is our major complaint. We are not picky eaters at all, and in fact, most of the food wasn't too bad. The thing we were concerned about was the cleanliness factor. Several times in the buffet, we were seated at tables that had used silverware on them that were supposed to be the ones we were to eat with. They set every table for the number of seats that were there, so if a table was set for four, and only two people ate at it, they would leave the unused silverware, napkins, and glasses there and replace the ones that were used. The only problem with this was that sometimes people would use the silverware or napkins and put it back. Yuck! I respect the fact that the hotel is trying to save water, but they should put down the silverware after they know how many people are sitting there to avoid this problem. Or, they could just let you get your own silverware. Anyway, beware! Check your silverware before you use it.

Also, my mom and sister both got food poisoning on the same day during our stay, so that knocked out a day or so of vacation for them. I got food poisoning on the day we flew home, and it lasted for a week. We never drank the water (which they say is supposed to be filtered for the whole resort, so it should be safe) so we are 99% sure it was from the food. I know it is not that uncommon to get food poisoning, but it's still a bummer, and I've never had it at any other resort I've stayed at.

The buffet food was okay, and the snack areas outside weren't too bad for lunch or snacking. The restaurants were pretty good. I liked the fact that you could make reservations for the restaurants as many times as you want during your stay. We tried all three restaurants, and they were all decent. Our least favorite was the Mexican, although it had good margaritas and good tortilla soup. The Italian was alright, but nothing spectacular. Our favorite was La Pergola, the Mediterannean restaurant. They had good bruschetta, and their entrees weren't bad. However, the highlight was the FABULOUS mango creme brulee. I had it three times! (What!?! It's vacation!) It was awesome, and I highly recommend it.

Bars: We didn't try all the bars, but we liked the Martini bar. They made great chocolate martinis and cosmos. However, they ran out of the chocolate martinis quite frequently, which was disappointing. The lobby bar on the Grand side made good frozen margaritas, and they made pretty good lemonade by the pools. We didn't ever make it to the disco, so I can't comment.

Shows: The shows were okay. Not as good as some other resorts, but they were entertaining. Also, they only have 7 shows, so if you are there for more days than that, you will see repeats. The dancers try hard though. Our favorite was David, as he was always very enthusiastic! They also brought a dance troupe in to do a Mexican show, and it was really good. Also, on the Mexican show night, they were giving out shots of tequila in these little clay mugs that you got to keep, so that was kind of fun.

Noise: The rudest people we encountered were fellow vacationers. There were a ton of kids, which doesn't usually bother me, but the parents really let them run wild here. They were very loud, screaming in the hallways and in the buffet. One kid even kept hitting me in the head with her napkin repeatedly while running in a circle around our table, and her parents never said a word to her. That seems to be the theme here, so just beware before you go. I don't know if it's a cultural difference or what, but it was very different from other resorts I have stayed at.

Activities: They seemed to have lots of activities for kids during the day and before the show at night. They also have all kinds of activities during the day like basketball, soccer, water sports, biking, etc. We went on the bike tour one morning, which was fun. They take you to see some dolphins in a pool, which was okay, but they also take you to a zoo. The zoo was more exciting to me. It is a quick run-through, and they don't have a ton of animals, but they did have tigers that were huge. We also checked out the bikes and went on our own rides throughout the stay. The area outside the resort seemed pretty safe, and there are some neat views when crossing the river.

Excursions: We did several excursions and enjoyed them all. We went to Las Caletas one day (through Vallarta Adventures). It was fun, but seemed a bit rushed by the time you get there, as you stop to pick up passengers in Puerto Vallarta as well. We did some snorkeling here, as the water was much more clear than at our resort.

We also did an excursion that went into the mountains (don't remember the name, but we booked through Vallarta Adventures). It was great. Our guide was awesome...very knowledgeable. We went to a traditional farm and saw how they made tortillas and tried some different fruits. We also went on a hike through the forest and stopped at a beautiful beach to eat lunch. It rained on us most of the day, so we were wet the entire time, but it was still a great trip.

My sister and I did the Outdoor Adventure tour through Vallarta Adventures. It was awesome! I highly recommend this one. We rode mules into the mountains and then rappelled and ziplined back down. It was so much fun, and it is all very safe. The guides are great and make sure you have a good time.

We also booked a fishing boat one morning and caught several fish. It was fun. We booked this through a guy who was just walking down the beach. I don't know the company.

I would also recommend going into Puerto Vallarta to check things out. It is very scenic, and we had a great time walking around and shopping. We got some great deals at the market downtown after some haggling.

Overall, this was a great trip, and we would definitely come back to Nuevo Vallarta. We probably wouldn't stay at the Marival again, due to the food service. If anyone has any questions about anything, feel free to ask!

Just came back after spending the first week of August at the Marival Resort. My suggestion is that the Nuevo Vallarta area is better suited for a trip during the fall, winter or spring versus the heat of the summer. Extremely hot and humid which limited the number of activities we chose to participate in. For example, the free golf lesson was so hot that I couldn't even hold on to my club due to perspiration.

As far as the Marival resort, one needs to manage their expectations. You can't compare Marival to Hawaii or a cruise line or even Cancun. Marival is a fairly inexpensive alternative to a higher end experience. Given that, I found Marival to have excellent service, clean facilities, comfortable rooms and a great location right on a very warm and swimable beach. Yes there were beach vendors but I found them to be mostly invisible.

Food service was hit or miss. Bella Vista was our favorite and the Mexican restaurant was good but La Pergola was a bit disappointing. The indoor buffet was fine for breakfast or lunch but not a great dinner option. The outdoor buffets were marginal due to the challenge of keeping food fresh in the extreme heat. Our best food experience was actually a excursion to Puerto Vallarta and dinner at Dacqouri Dick's. Very good indeed!

Evening entertainment primarily consisted of an one hour performance at the resort's theatre. Not bad but certainly not Las Vegas - again, manage your expectations.

Overall, I would recommend this resort with some qualifications. My children, 13 and 15, and my wife all said they had a very good time.
