“Great service lackluster accommodations”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 weeks ago

Let me first say that we are Legendary Members at the Hard Rock Resorts and this isn't our first time going to one. We bought ours in Dominican Republic last year and fell in love. However when we visited Hard Rock Vallarta we had a different story.

Starting out it was a nightmare to get checked into our resort. We are members however our friends who also went with us booked both rooms so that we could get adjoining rooms. The front desk would not allow us to check in until they arrived some 3 hours later. The lobby was hot and needed better A/C. The staff was super friendly though, allowing us to go to the bar and have some drinks while we waited. Once we finally got to our rooms, which happened to not be adjoining we found it to be quite small compared to the last resort we stayed at. The hot tub took up most of the room. The tvs where quite small, however the beds where amazingly soft. We ended up going back down to the front desk to see if we could get rooms that were adjoining and they were unable to accommodate us at the time. The following day we were able to switch rooms finally after talking to the front desk for some time. Once into our new room we settled in and were taking showers to get ready to go out only to be walked in on by other hotel guests who thought they were getting an unoccupied room. AWKWARD! After that debacle we ended up going down to the pool to enjoy ourselves. The hotel is dated, as you will notice, the pool was good size however there were missing pieces of tile everywhere and the most shocking part of the pool was the BLACK MOLD in and around the POOL. See attached photo. Talk about a major health hazard, I would never go back just for that reason.

Our biggest gripe about the trip was at the swim up bar when we saw the bartender try to discretely pour bottom shelf liquor into a top shelf bottle and replace it on the shelf so nobody would see, however we saw. This made us terribly upset as we bought this Legendary Membership with the understanding it would be top shelf. We confronted the hotel guest relationship manager who looked into the issue. She spoke with the beverage manager who admitted to consolidating liquor. THIS IS IN NO WAY ACCEPTABLE!!!! The manager made it up to us by sending unopened top shelf bottles to our room. (there was no way we were going to sit in our room all night and finish them, ughhh). Two days later I experienced the same thing happen again with the liquor being poured into another bottle to consolidate, this was at the outside Italian restaurant though. At the same time we also saw the waiters pour liquor into plastic cups, typically used for soda, and serve it to underage kids who ended up making their own mixed drinks! I thought parents should be aware of this before you spend money and go here.

The hotel was showing its age. The decorations in the hotel were minimal (not what you would expect from a Hard Rock), the massive paper mural in the lobby was falling off the wall, literally. The lobby did not have sufficient seating and tables to sit and relax and play games. My biggest gripe was the fact that most of the time they were playing Mexican music in the lobby and down by the pool all day, HELLO Hard Rock Hotel (where is the American Rock Music). They have cabanas and a private beach just for owners (which we are), however we were not top of the line owners so we were not able to use them!!! When we were in the pool one night a swarm of thousands of bees flew over us and made a nest under a canopy in the pool. When we asked management what they planned on doing they said nothing, (hello beekeeper). Talk about a hazard to anyone in the wrong place at the wrong time. We also booked a zipline trip with the hotel workers, they said it would be a 4 hour trip and to be there at 10 am on the dot. We took a cab to the meet up place, got there at 9:57 and the bus had left. Thankfully another tour guide from a competitor called the bus up and told them to wait for us at the next stop. We got a free ride from the competitor. The excursion lasted 6.5 hours and we ended up being late for our massage as we were told it would only be 4 hours. The hotel workers were not willing to refund our money as they said it was our fault for not showing up, after numerous attempts and hours later a manager finally refunded our money back.

Check out sucked, you had to wait in long lines to check out and get a piece of paper to give to the valets so you could leave. What ever happened to express checkout, especially for a place like this.

Let me focus on some of the positives, the staff was out of this world, they literally did anything you asked them to do, granted we tipped every time we came into contact with them as they work really hard. The food was above average but wanted to see more variety in the buffet. They typically served same food every day. You did get limitless resort credits which we used almost every day at the spa. The massages were great and staff was super friendly! They had a good variety of activities and excursions you could go on. Daily activities at the pool were also entertaining. The nightly shows were just average, nothing to write home about. Also, its about a 30 minute cab ride to downtown if you want good nightlife. The night club at the hotel was just so so, not much decorations or a theme going on. Beach was average, not very white sand or water. There was washout from a nearby river that caused water to be cloudy and brown but the water was quite warm.

I would not return to this hotel for all the factors I have stated including the health issues with the black mold, you would think it would be a major concern to the hotel but it was not. I do plan on visiting the other Hard Rocks hopefully in the near future.

Room Tip: Get a ocean view high up.

Nonetheless I would like to hear more detailed feedback about your experience.

This was our fifth time visiting this property and it has become our second home due to the wonderful staff, location, and high quality of the service. Special thanks to Rosie, Jenny, and Raphael who were very attentive serving us at the pool and beach area. Thank you to our concierge Juan, who made sure we had everything we wanted whenever we wanted it. It made for a very relaxing vacation.

It was also great to see Lucy again. Thank you for the special relationship you have developed with my daughter. She looks forward to seeing you every year.

Both room 1060 and 1059, the bathroom smell so bad. The smell is similar the sewage has broken. We have called facility to fix the problem but still did not work. We end up have to use a wet towel to cover the drainage hole in the bathroom and the shower in order to stay in the bathroom the whole time we stay there. We have complained this but your representative indicated we can be moved to another room but did not come through. Feel like complaining not going to get you anyway with this resort. The water on the beach is so muddy. Was not able to enjoy the beach. So much insect bites from the beach, outdoor restaurant, pool area and room. I believe the facility should spray the area with bug repellent on a regular basis or grow plant that repellent insects. Lesson learn. Must bring insect repellent.
The room feel like there are no sound proof . So noisy. I could hear next door moving thing around and the hallway is so noisy, I can't even take an afternoon nap. The second day the door of the room was broken. Lucky, facility was able to fixed it quickly. However at night you can see the hallway light beaming in. There are not enough onsite and indoor activities. We can’t spend every hour and day out door. There should be more indoor activities. End up we spend so much time playing the pool in the SunBar since we didn’t have any option. Also in the SunBar the celling fall a piece of dry wall on me. The staff at the bar did not speak English well. At first seem like he didn't care that happen but end up they got the facility manager to take at look at the damage. In room 1059, there were ant and cockroach. The bathroom did not have enough space to allow you to put your personal items. Normally, my son loves kid club anywhere we go but at this property he went there once and did not want to go back. Need more staff to speak better English. I have high expectation of Hard Rock Hotel since I have stay at other locations. This is the worst one I have ever stayed. Overall room and property suck but services and food are good.

Very good experience for our family - we are two 50 y/o old adults with two older teen kids 17 and 20. A last minute booking with about 10 day's notice.

Pros:
All-Inclusive - you really can't beat it. All the pressure is off. We completely enjoyed it.

Staff was fantastic. So nice, accommodating, fun.

$1800 in credits to use makes for a really nice break and encourages you to DO things. We did the City Tour, surf lessons, and between us had 5 massages and a pedicure and still didn't use them all up! You do have a 20% "copay" for these activities but the out of pocket costs are reasonable.

Rosy the waitress (poolside and beachside) was fantastic. She was there when you needed her every time and brought drinks quickly. Her reputation preceded her!

Octavio the bartender at the swim up bar was great too. Best thing to do is to check out all the liquors they have to offer and call specifically what type you want in your drink. Otherwise it may be a bit funky. Be open to trying new drinks - keep your eyes open and you'll see some crazy ones!

Manager (forgot his name - sorry!) was a huge help finding our son's shoes in their immense Lost & Found system - just in time before we left for home. Much appreciated.

All the guac you can eat - all day long! Hooray! (Other food too, of course)

Restaurants were quite good - Frieda's was the best and a very diverse and interesting menu (the steak tampiquena was amazing! As were the soups, the desserts, stuffed peppers, everything!) Ipanema Brazilian was also great - tons of food and they keep coming by again and again to offer different cuts of meat (chicken too). Ciao Italian was delicious as well. The Market was good for breakfast and lunch and has A/C, an omelet bar, fajita bar at lunch - tons of fresh fruit and multiple buffet items every day. Our sushi eaters loved Zen, but I didn't think their teriyaki was very good...

We were there Aug 16-22 and there was NO problem getting 4 lounge chairs together at beach or pool any time of day. Maybe by then they were moving into the slower season? Beach was essentially empty. Not many younger people for our 17 and 20 year old kids to hang with, but they survived - it was a great time together with them as near-adults. Advise to split time between day on tours and days at the pool.

Sunsets were spectacular every night - be sure to go set yourself up on the beach in a lounge chair with a drink from 8 - 8:45 every night. Then get dinner afterwards. (We were in pool hanging out until at least 7 every day.) Rained several nights while we slept - and had a fantastic lightning storm one night - wow!!

The beach is nice, but be aware that the water is warm - 85 degrees- and definitely NOT the clear-blue you find in some places in the tropics. For our trip there was a lot of fine sand and silt in the water so it was hazy brown at the shoreline the whole time.

Our Family Suite was 2 adjoining rooms , 1 King bed for us and 2 doubles in the kids' room - plus a bath for each room. But having us adjoin was great. Didn't have to go down the hall or knock on their door - we could all just wander in and out of the 2 rooms, watch a movie together, coordinate when were were leaving, etc. (however we could lock each other out if desired.) Also - rooms were on the ground floor right by the pools, so very easy to get back to if you wanted a change or to use the restroom. Highly recommend. Also, no noise complaints. Rooms 1010 and 1011. No sunset view, but you should be out on the beach for that anyway!

As for the free tours you can schedule with your credits, we really liked the "City Tour" which really should be called the "Town and Country" tour. Freddy was the best tour guide on a big air conditioned bus that took us to old Puerto Vallerta to see the old cobblestone streets and red tile roofs, the church dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe, up to a great vista and then down to a shopping area. Then we drove along to coast hugging the south side of the bay, stopped for photos at Los Arcos, then up into to jungle for a visit to a tequila factory - with free tastings! Wonderfully interesting day. Lunch was ordered first and then served in a beautiful location post tequila tasting but was not included, and was pricey - so just plan ahead for that (get the lobster - amazing!). ALSO - VERY IMPORTANT - If your do this tour or any tour that takes you into the jungle (zip line, etc) you MUST cover yourself with bug repellant - DEET or even something stronger that you can only get in Mexico. There are teeny tiny mosquitos that get you - you don't even notice, but the next day you will be COVERED in bites that will progressively get worse. 5 days later my legs look like I'm covered in chicken pox. Avoid this if you can. No one warned us.

Free wifi !

Awesome bright green iguana as we walked to breakfast one day!

Met a nice young man on the beach one night at sunset who shot a ton of amazing photos of us for $25-50. Gave us everything on a flash drive and CD on the spot. This is NOT part of the hotel - he was just an entrepreneur doing this on the side, and the beach is federal property so it is his prerogative to do so. He just happened to see me as I was trying to set up a self timer photo, so it was perfect for us. We arranged to meet him the next night and got 40-50 AMAZING photos. (Hard Rock has a company called Rock Shots that offers the same thing, but they were all booked up. Would have cost us $250 of our resort credits anyway so this was much better.)

Cons:
Their wine is awful. Just don't bother
Only 2 beer selections at the bars - Tecate Light and Indio. This seemed strange to us. No Modelo? Corona? Bohemia? Pacifico?
Having to deal with exchanging towels/towel cards can be a pain.
Beach is not that gorgeous crystal blue color - you'll have to get over that.

Be aware:
You can attend a 90 minute sales pitch to join their vacation club and get all sorts of free add-ons as a reward - if you can handle it. Not too high pressure; to be honest we never really understood the benefit of the program they were offering, but at the end we received a free romantic dinner for 2 on the beach at sunset (great ambience, but probably our least favorite meal of the week - good thing it was free - list price was $500!) and a trip for 4 to any of the big outings they offer - we selected the Marietas Eco Tour. So it was worth it. Just do it and you'll get free stuff. However - I'd recommend avoiding all the other time share crazies that try to grab you (airport, etc.) and just do this at the hotel. (They explained all our activity options, resort credits, etc. and then offered this "opportunity" at the end right when we arrived, as we were waiting for our room.)

Know your cellular limitations - Verizon charges 5 cents for each incoming text and 50 cents for each you send - best to insist everyone turn off their texting. (Easier said than done.) Makes it hard to communicate between each other when we were used to texting and now we couldn't. We texted through Facebook as an alternative, but make sure you switch over the the hotel's free wifi. They also offer free calls to the USA, Canada and Mexico from the room phones.

Room Tip: Our Family Suite was 2 adjoining rooms , 1 King bed for us and 2 doubles in the kids' room - 2 b...

We again had a wonderful experience at a Hard Rock. The rooms on the 8th floor were amazing and greatly attended by Armando(?). He is by FAR the best housekeeper I have ever had. Our personal vacation planner was most attentive and left us to our privacy when we weren't interested in anything. So thanks to Alfredo for making excellent choices in excursions. By far the best waitstaff is ROSY This lady hustles non-stop from the time you sit until the time you go in. Look for her down on the beach. Even when we moved to the pool she would check on our needs. The restaurants are the same name as Punta Cana although smaller and not as good. With the exception of Zen This is the best service and food on the premises. If you are a major gambler try the casino, It is very secure (complete with metal detector) and the miniumum bet is low. I wouldn't bother again. The excursions with Vallarta Adverntures were very organized and professional. The city tour took all day but was highly enjoyable. We learned a lot about the culture and got to see some awesome back roads. If you get motion sickness sit in the front of the bus as it is quite bumpy and wind through the mountains. Take BUG SPRAY everywhere. My sons look like they had the chicken pox.
