We went to Nuevo Vallarta the first week of September, during the middle of rainy season. We didn't mind the daily rain, because it came and went and we had enough sun during the week. But the rivers make the waters in the bay really brown and cloudy. So basically we stayed out of the ocean and stayed at our pool at the resort. We didn't want to commit to an all day snorkel tour, which we'd really love doing. We chose las Caletas because we could try snorkeling, and if it didn't work out there was also, kayaking, a spa, a nature walk, and zip lines for our five year old.
The boat ride was nice. We started in Nuevo, picked up passengers in PV, then off we went. On the way we stopped at los Arcos, really beautiful rock formations with birds of all kinds all over. In all it's about an hour from PV.
After we arrived we headed over to the snorkeling & kayaking area. We used the provided snorkeling equipment and off we went into the water. Wow, that was awful. The visibility was maybe 8 -10 feet. There were pretty fish there, but the water was yucky. We've been snorkeling in Maui, so nonetheless this was a disappointment. I wonder how it is when the waters are clear (not during rainy season).
We then headed up to the Canopy Kids area so our five year old could try out the zip lines. Wow, how cool! We had the most amazing guides, Lorena and Denise. Denise painted a Batman mask on our son's face, and both she and Lorena put him in his safety gear (harness/ helmet, etc). Let me tell you it's the first time we've done something like this for our son and we were totally impressed with their attention to safety. Once they're on they're supported by two ropes. We saw we were in very good hands. Lorena, who is very experienced, made our boy and us feel at ease about everything. She actually helped set up and build the whole area. She's really a cool lady. The area is a great setup where they climb up rope ladders and traverse over bridges. There's two zip lines, and at the end is a very happy boy, whose dad wished he could have done the same! I cannot speak highly enough of this part of the tour. Thank you so much Lorena & Denise... it was fantastic!
Also really nice was the nature walk. It is guided, and we learned a lot about the ecology and wildlife there. After this was lunch. They have an open buffet, and the food was so delicious. There were so many types of food including seafood, paella, and other mexican dishes. That with the open bar and all was sweet!
The boat ride back was great, especially since they were feeding me tequila shots (at my request!). Everybody was really so friendly and attentive, and we had a great time. All in all it was our best day of our week in Nuevo Vallarta and I'd for sure recommend it.
