“Our first family vacation in years”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2013

This was one of of my first trips to an all inclusive hotel and we were looking at something fairly inexpensive. We honestly just wanted to get away. So we found a great deal to the Occidental and were not disappointed.

We have/had always stayed in time share based resorts previous to the Occidental, and always right in Puerto Vallarta, so staying at an all inclusive and being out in Nuevo Vallarta was going to be different for us. We had a great time.

We travelled into PV twice during our trip, once by bus and once by water taxi (the water taxi is definitely an experience). For the rest of our 1 week stay we had no need or desire to leave the resort area in Nuevo Vallarta.

The rooms themselves are nothing overly exciting but we really weren't expecting anything fancy. We really enjoyed the food and convenience of an all inclusive, and every day the main buffet was different as they changed their buffet based on themes.

Its a smaller resort but to be completely honest, thats a huge plus in our books. Everything is close. The pool is close, the restaurant is close, the snack area is close, and so is the ocean. We really couldn't ask for much more.

This was our daughter's first trip to somewhere tropical and she kept telling us that she couldnt believe that this wasnt a dream. Very cute indeed. She had a great time and so did we.

We would have no hesitation in booking our next trip to Nuevo Vallarta with them again (if the price was right)!

Wonderful smaller resort on the beach, five minute walk from your room to the sun and sand. Staff were very friendly, despite a mix up with the rooms which resulted in having to switch rooms the next day, beds are a little hard if you are used to a soft bed. We booked this resort because it was smaller and did not have a bunch of night clubs so there wouldn't be people partying all night. We went with our 20 year old son's, they had a great time and enjoyed the pool bar with all the young crowd later at night, a couple of nights they opened the cantina up for dancing later at night but everything (bars) shuts down at 1:30 am however they had a great time and didn't overdo it on the partying as it all shut down at a reasonable hour. The lounge bar is beautiful and very relaxing to read a book or visit, karaoke night was fun, nightly entertainment pool side was good, we really enjoyed Christmas Eve/Day entertainment with the traditional Mexican dress and dancing. The food was very good, lots of variety at the buffet for all meal times, staff there were very friendly and accomodating. The a la carte restaurants were really good, service was wonderful, we spent our last night at the Mexican a la carte, the food and service was great the ambience and music, very enjoyable way to wrap up Mexico. We strolled the beach at 11:00 at night and saw turtles coming on shore to lay eggs, we felt very safe walking the beach (within a reasonable stroll of the hotel) at night the day time you could walk forever. Across the street there is a smaller Mall with a market where we bought extra water and Sabritos. The pool bar music got a little nerve wracking as they play it all day and night, it would have been nice to just enjoy the surf sounds for a few hours each day. Pool chairs filled up fast, same with beach area but as a family of 4 we always managed to find 4 seats on the beach and pull them all together. We never swam in the pool as we're not pool people, however it looked inviting and clean. We would go back to Nuevo and this resort, we felt very safe. Vallarta Adventures tours were great, thanks Roberto! Prices for the tours were the same as what they are on line when booked through the hotel the tours we took were great. Overall the entire resort experience was fantastic, the photo's we had done by Ivan are wonderful and well worth the money, he'll have you smiling and relaxed which makes for some great family photos. My only suggestion would be to stock the rooms with more bottled water, even if they put a few extra bottles on the counter (they stock regular rooms every other day) and to have a hand sanitizer stand on both sides of the buffet entrance that people must use before they go in to serve themselves at the buffet, (like they do on cruise ships).

Room Tip: Get a room away from the open air lobby as the sounds of groups checking in travels up. Corner unit...

This was our first all-inclusive experience. Food was wonderful. Staff was wonderful. Was upgraded to the Royal Club....wonderful experience. From the minute you walk into the resort to the minute you walk out you are treated like royalty! Thank you Occidental Grande....you made our short trip absolutely Grand!

This review has been a long time coming, but after looking for vacations for this winter, I thought it best to provide a review of my trip last Spring.
The following is a quick and dirty list of Pros and Cons to consider:
Pros:
Short transfer from the airport.
Small hotel that is easy to navigate. We saw several mobility challenged people who enjoyed themselves at this hotel.
Food was good (Better than larger hotels in Punta Cana)
Ocean and Beach were clean
Waves are good for beginner/intermediate boogie boarding
Palapas always available on the beach.
Hotel was recently renovated and rooms were nice.
Activity staff provided sports throught the day. (played a ton of volleyball!)

Cons:
Nightly entertainment shows were hit and miss.
Not the place to go if you are after a wild nightlife or disco/party scene.
Availability of space/chairs around the pool could be an issue during peak times.
If you are a drink snob, some of the cocktails/wine could have been better. (Not an issue for me)
If you are a fitness freak, the gym leaves a lot to be desired. Very little weight training equipment.

Tips:
Be sure to order the shrimp burritos from the a la carte menu at the beach restaurant for lunch.
Several guests did not even know about the lunch a la carte option.

Wi-Fi is available at the Starbucks across the street for free. It is less than a 5 minute walk.

Request a ground floor room as they have small patios. The upper floors do not have balconies.

All in all a great value for the money. I would certainly return as I could care less about the nightly entertainment and/or Disco.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms have a small patio - we loved it!

Stayed here for 3 nights over the Christmas break, first time staying at an all-inclusive. Overall I was not very impressed with this hotel - the rooms were a bit on the smaller side, felt a little cramped with the wife and 2 small boys. Also there were no balconies which I thought was a little strange for a ocean front resort. AC unit was not very effective and room felt a little stuffy unless the windows and door were left open. Liked the sliding door for the shower.

The buffed had so-so good - mainly international food and not a lot of mexican dishes. The restaurants were definitely better but need reservations. We had the romance package which included a dinner in the club restaurant where the food was good.

Plenty of alcohol available! Stick with straight shots of Tequilla - the sugar syrup used had a strange after taste. Pool was nice and the boys had fun on the beach with the boogie boards that we got from the hotel. Massage was nice as well.

On the whole really quite average in my opinion - will not be going back. Plenty of other places to stay in PV. Also the sand at the beach was not that nice.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on one of the higher floors 5+. Also make reservations for the restaurants as soon...

We booked an all inclusive vacation to Nuevo Vallarta, and thought we would try a new hotel. We got a great deal for the Occidental Grand, and I am very glad we made that choice. Compared to any other place I have stayed in Nuevo Vallarta, or on the Cancun side, or in Cuba the food and service of the Occidental was far, far superior.
The selection and preparation of all the food we had was superb! I ate so much because I couldn't stop! The wait staff was also amazing. My boyfriend and I were greeted each morning by Erik and Richard in the main buffet. These two men worked hard, always had a smile, and a few moments for some small talk. It became a game to see if I could make it from the buffet to the table without them seeing me and coming to take my plate for me, and escort us back to the table. It was a fun challenge, and I very rarely made it past their eagle eyes! LOL It wasn't just these two that were fantastic with service. Every staff member from the gardeners, wait staff, concierge, and security were all wonderful.
The rooms were clean, beautiful and well maintained. When we did have a technical difficulty with our safe it was corrected quickly.
There is a reason this hotel rates as high as it does on Trip Advisor. I will stay here again.

For anyone that is wondering or hesitating about this hotel all I can say is DON'T! It is 10/10 on everything....clean, friendly staff, beautiful beach, good food. What a great time we had. We went over Xmas and met alot of Canadians their. Our older kids (in their 20's) found many others to hang out with at night and had a great time. We even brought our 15 month old grandchild and he had a blast. Right across from the hotel is the Paradise Plaza mall which is home to many stores including Mcdonalds, Subway and Starbucks! What more could you ask for. As well a clean and tidy laundromatt if you need it. I just can't say anything wrong with this resort or the area of Nuevo Vallarta, the people here are so fun and friendly! Thank you Occidental staff for making our trip such a memorable one and SEE YOU AGAIN SOON!!!
