“Excellent Vacation.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2012

Our first trip tp Puerta Vallarta and already planning to return to Occidental Grand Nuevo Vallarta...Hotel was clean and rooms were so nice. Food was to die for in !
But most of all was staff, from management to waiters, housekeeping, everyone who could not do enough for us and always so friendly, helpful and smiling !!!
We will return to this hotel for sure.
Thank you for making my first trip to Mexico a lasting memory.

My girlfriend and I arrived at the Grand in Nuevo Vallerta for what we had basically intended to be a 'no-frills' break from work, and a final hit of the sun before the long winter of Edmonton descends.

We were collected from the airport by our shuttle-bus, which was on-time and waiting for us to arrive. On the journey back to the hotel our 'rep' Eduardo gave a brief run down of the surrounding areas and of course the low down on the hotel and what would be covered.

Check in at the hotel was quick and easy, the staff welcoming and efficient. We chose to make our own way to our room, which we discovered was basic, but equipped with everything we required - excellent air-conditioning (the humidity would have been pretty testing without this), ample storage, huge bed and a minibar-fridge (I'll come on to this shortly). Bizarrely, the sliding wardrobe door serves to either close the wardrobe, OR obscure a glass pane with a view in to the bathroom. I think most people will choose to cover the glass, unless observing your partner at their most intimate is your cup of tea! Seems a bit of a strange design to me, but hey ho.

In terms of the actual room, we had no gripes. The only issue we had was with the minibar, which should have been stocked every other day (with pop, a couple of cans of beer and bottled water). Ours was stocked twice over the week, dispite repeated requests to the front desk. Try arguing with someone that insists the fridge was stocked, when you know damn well it wasn't!! Kinda bizarre when the holiday is all inclusive. But there we go, we didn't cause a fuss, it was just a little strange - the customer is always right clearly did not apply to this scenario!

We chacked out the excusions on offer on the second day. I was not present when my girlfriend was speaking to the rep, but it turns out that there is a significant mark-up on the excursions when you buy at the hotel - rather than booking online before you leave. We both thought this was a little off, and it effectively put most of the excursions out of our budget. We decided to go for the city tour in the end.

The city tour itself basically got us out of the resort for a day, but make no mistake, it is basically a trip to various sales outlets who presumably give the hotel a commission of any sales. Again, we weren't particuarly impressed, but we enjoyed being out of the hotel for the day.

Food and drink at the hotel was excellent. The buffet service was very good, though it was closed for dinner for mst of our visit due to lack of people. The Mexican and Italian restaurants were also good.

The pool was closed for refurbishment on our visit, not that this mattered. The pool next door was availlable for our use - we chose to swim in the sea, which was arguably as warm as any swimming pool I have ever been in.

This was my first visit to Mexico, and I'd certainly visit this resort again. If you are looking for a cheap getaway, you could do a lot worse than the Occidental Grand at Puerto Vallerta.

Be patient with the locals trying to sell you stuff, tip the hotel workers, and you'll have a great time :)

Room Tip: Apparently the ground floor rooms have a small patio, so it might be worth requesting one of these i...

From the second we arrived at the resort the staff were amazing. The room was nice with good air conditioning full mini bar and great maid service. The buffet and speciality restaurants were like eating at a 5 star restaurant EVERY meal. The pool was closed but were able to use pool next door and it was no problem and we still had a pool side bar. The ocean was very warm and the beach was great. All the staff are fantastic and Eric (waiter) Gabriela (entertainment) and Idaly (concierge) were super great. I will return one day and recommend this resort to everyone, you will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: room 411 was great.

Just got home from holiday at the Occidental Grand Nuevo Vallarta this morning. The hotel was beutiful and so clean, food great even the buffet was really good, nice burgers and stuff till 1am at the grill behind the beach bar. But it was the staff that made the stay wounderful.
First night there met a couple that told us about Carlos this great bartender, Carlos can mix a great drink, kept giving me new great rum drinks and lots of great ones for the wife, she's not a rum drinker. It was so nice talking with Carlos about his family and so much more, he's just one of those guys that makes you feel special.
Our Daughter got sick and the waiter, Juan asked where she was and we said sick in bed Next thing we knew they made up plates for her and her husband and took them to thier room.So special thanks to Juan, Erick,Daniel and Valintine that are not just waiters but friends that care about the people staying at their hotel. I never got all the waiters and bartenders names but they all go way beyond thier jobs at the Occidental.
Finally Idaly and the staff at the front desk, they went out of thier way to find me small bills as I had ran out and only had large ones. Any questions I had about anything, they just smile and help anyway the can.
I've been to Mexico before and the Dominican on other holidays and have never been treated so well before. So just want to give thanks were it's due. Guess I better thank most of the other guests at the hotel for making it so much fun. Can't wait to return, and thanks again to all the staff and people that made this a holiday to remember.

My wife and I stayed here for 7 days in mid September 2012. This is their shoulder season so we got a good deal on our airfare and all-inclusive package thru Sunquest.

Food was very good, with buffet restaurant having a different selection of main courses every night.

Rooms were clean, and air-conditioning was very welcome after being outside in 35C temperatures !

Across the street from this resort is a small shopping mall, which is helpful. In the mall there is a Starbucks, which offers free WiFi ( log-in info is on receipt ).

Bars make good drinks. Lobby bartender, Carlos, is a true gentleman. Nestor at Bar Olas and Sandra(?) taking orders around the pool, made sure we were always taken care of.

The fitness staff was friendly and made sure that everyone was having a good time - the bingo password is....... lotteria, lotteria, lotteria, whoop, whoop.

Beach was nice and sandy, and seeing sea turtles laying eggs at night, was a real highlight. We had some spectacular lighting storms at night, which are normal for this time of year. Although online weather reports said thunderstorms, we had sunny weather everyday.

We will return.

My husband and I had a great room, a great warm feeling of relaxation and comfort, and unforgettable shows at night. Everyone was so nice and friendly especially a bartender named Benjamin. He made the most original cocktails I have ever had. I don't think I will ever forget them! We would also like to call out an energetic girl named Gabriella. She teaches water aerobics very well. She's the best! Thank you so much for an unforgettable and exotic trip!

Nice contemporary rooms remodeled recently. It wasn't very busy so having just 2 pools worked for us. Food is average. Service is good. It's a small resort perfect to relax. They offer a complimentary photo session on the beach. It was the best thing as the sunset pictures came out really good.

I would stay here again.
