“Missing Mexico”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2014

We were at the Jalisco in Feb of 2014. This was our second tome there. The rooms were clean, food was great and the staff were going out of their way to ensure the stay was perfect,

The renovations took away all the Mexican ambiance. You got rid of the pictures and the pottery and any other reference to the Mexican cultural that was so much a part of the beauty of the resort.

Since when is purples, blues and silvers part of the colorful history of Mexico, There used to be theme nights at the Jalisco, not now. Even some of the staff are uncomfortable with the changes, because it is not their colors. You even remove the gazebo on the water, no vendors on the promenade, only sellers on the beach.

Sometimes bigger is NOT better.

We had an amazing time at the Riu Jalisco. The rooms were spotless, the food was great, and we found the resort was relaxing and well laid out with many activities if you wanted to be busy, or lots of relaxing spaces if you just wanted to lay on the beach or by the pools and drink rum! In terms of dollars for value, we found this all-inclusive to be an excellent deal. In fact, when we booked it was for a standard room, but when we checked in they had upgraded us, (no charge) to a suite. We sat on the balcony for 15 mins one day and watched whales breaching out in the bay! It had many families there, so if you are looking for more of an "adults only" this may not be the ideal place, however, the mix of gringos from Canada like us, and locals from the Interior we found very interesting. I cant understand some of the reviews criticizing the locals or the line ups? To us, if your biggest complaint of the day is that someone accidentally "buds" in front of you in a line up for more food than you can imagine (and GOOD food!) then life is pretty good!
We would definitely recommend RIU resorts.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the outside, and on a higher floor. Almost all rooms on the outside have an ocean...

Stayed at the hotel from 14-21 Feb. Food was OK and the beach was average but the most horrible experience was the room. It was clean but had a strong smell of fumigation and fungus. We even found black mould spots on the blackout plastic curtain covering the balcony door. We paid to get exposed to poison every night :-( ... never again.

Room Tip: Choose a room which is exposed to sun.

First time ever staying at an RIU. We were excited because you find them all over. Upon our arrival the place looked amazing and the rooms were very spacious. We did not have a view from our room, but we didn't care because if your on vacation and spending a lot of time in your room are you really on vacation? The bathrooms were spacious and the shower was very large. Beds were not that comfy, but we didn't expect them to be. There were no clocks in the room which sucked because we had to call for a wake up call. TV's were nice but 90% of channels in spanish. Fridges were stocked with water, beer, and soda. The staff did a great job refilling the soda but a horrible job refilling the water. We also had issues a few days with the maids taking our dirty towels and not leaving new towels. The beds were made up but sheets where not changed unless you take them off your self. The AC worked great in the room!

-Food-
We made reservations at every restaurant at the resort. Two of them were buffet style, which was disappointing. The steak house the food was fair and not that great. The buffet was the best place to eat because it had tons of variety. The breakfast was very good and the dinner always had selections for everyone type of eater. The food wasn't amazing but wasn't bad. The one disappointing part was the fact that they had no pool side food. So if you spent the day by the pool you either had to go to the lunch buffet or wait for dinner. Most resorts I have been to always have a small pool side place with burgers, chips, salsa, and cheese to munch on. The staff was nice but the service was slow and not very on point. You always had to wait to get drinks and either flag down a server or go to the bar and wait. They had not pool side servers so you always had to go to the bar.

-Nightlife-
The resort had a a show every night which was entertaining. They had a night bar which was usually half full. That was about it but it was enough for us.

-Pool & Beach-
The pool was large and well maintained. They always had activities going on and water was very warm. Not hot tub though. Beach was large and tons of chairs. At the pool you had to get their early to get the good chairs. Beach was groomed but no servers at all. We brought our own cups which was smart unless you wanted to go to the bar every few minutes. No water bottles down below so bring your own from your room or grab some from the front desk. Drinks were good but not a huge selection. Very weak unless you ask for a double.

Overall the trip was fun and resort was pleasant. I would never chose to stay at an RIU though again mostly because the service was poor and the food was fair. Paying good money for all inclusive i expect good service and decent food. I would say great place for a family with kids, but looking to party or a trip for couples I would look elsewhere.

Stayed just after hotel reopened after renovations & suite we booked wasn't available. put us in 2 separate rooms but setup horrible with 2 kids under 4! They locked themselves in the room & could walk out to hallway on their own. 90% locals on weekend 75% during the week & they received VIP treatment, jumping in line at the bar, pushing my children out of the way at the buffet. Horrible food, fly in sushi at Japanese restaurant. Room very poorly stocked, wasn't even tea or coffee available in the room, no shampoo, conditioner, etc. the shower in one of the rooms broke the first day and a piece fell on my daughter's head. one of the housekeeping staff took my personal facecloth when cleaning the room & I had a difficult hunt to get this returned. the service was mediocre, very poor English ability with most of the staff. Service at restaurants was either excellent or very poor. A customer service woman called our room very late & woke our little ones. 9pm and woke them. Washrooms in general areas disgusting - our 4 yr old commented on their smell. there was a bug issue at the kids pool and we were swarmed with them constantly.

On a positive note: beach beautiful, pools great (except the bugs), night entertainment good & tequila makes everything seem better!

Room Tip: Make sure your room type is actually available!

This trip was the best trip of my life. The area is spectacular. The resort however was not. The service for dinning was not great and the food was just ok. I have been to many AI's and this was the worst service I have received. We still had a blast as the bartenders were awesome at all the bars. I'm just spoiled I guess. We went next door to the RIU Vallarta for our meals many times and were greeted with a mimosa and a smile when walking in for breakfast and so sweet when we would come for dinner. We just didn't get that at the RIU Jalisco. I just think perhaps they are under staffed, and would only have one restaurant open at a time, so over crowded with empty food trays. Our room was nice, hated the two full beds pushed together for a king!!! The grounds and beach are wonderful and the waves were super fun to play in. Our Whale watching excursion was nothing short of amazing. We walked to Bucerias in 40 minutes and really enjoyed it. The town was so quaint with great boutiques and art galleries to shop in. There is also a Flea Market for those who like to haggle. We Had wonderful dinner there at the Luna Lounge and saw the Crazy Bithes show, our jaws hurt from laughing so hard. Good value for the money. Another trip to Bucerias we ate at Fat Boys and had many buckets of cold cervasas with their Seafood platter right out on the ocean beach with our toes in the sand and waves crashing in. We were a group of 8 and had a blast, I will definitely return to the Puerto Vallarta area, just not the RIU Jalisco for what we paid.

Wonderful , from start to finish. weather was great and the resort is imaculate. every one from the wait staff to the room cleaner , to the gardener. all happy to be there and happy to help you any way possible. We went on the Offroad adventure, and ARMONDO and BIG DADDY were great fun and made the trip very fun. We also did the Rythms of the night tour and dinner. we really loved that as well. our trips were booked thru Valarta adventures after we got to the resort. We see they sold trips cheaper in Bucerias, but did not know if they were as legit. Spent 1/2 day shopping in Bucerias and snacking and taking a break at FAT BOYS. we always love to stop there. Great seafood and Great atmosphere. We will definately go again . But mind you we have never had a bad experience, gone to PV 4 times , Love it every time . Stayed at Rui for the 2nd time and perfect both times.
