We just returned from our second visit to Dreams Villamagna. We stayed July 27 through August 3, 2013, and loved every minute. Everything about the resort was exceptional. The food was excellent, the rooms are spacious and well appointed, the grounds are immaculate, but what truly sets it apart is the service.
We ate at the World Café every day for breakfast; we ate there once for lunch, and once for dinner. The quality and variety of foods on the buffet was markedly improved. Breakfasts were a true delight, with many more traditional Mexican options as well as standard American breakfast fare. The Mexican Fiesta night dinner was outstanding. All of the different tacos and Mexican specialties were tastefully executed and we really enjoyed the dinner.
Each of the a la carte restaurants was fabulous and we never had a less than superb meal our entire stay. We dined three times at El Patio (Mexican), twice at Portofino (Italian), and once each at Oceana (seafood) and Seaside Grill (steakhouse). We went twice to the rooftop bar for sushi and it was quite good. There is a wide variety on each menu, and they even have Gluten Free options marked. A word of caution though, to those with more severe gluten sensitivities, I would still inquire with the waiter, because a dish marked gluten free came out with a giant crouton on top, so use your best judgment.
The service at all of the restaurants was top-notch. The hostesses were very friendly and quick to remember your room number. The wait staff was fast, attentive, and intuitive. They went out of their way to make sure you had a stellar dining experience. Whether it was remembering your favorite drink or dessert, to bringing you guacamole with your standard chips and salsa, the waiters here are second to none! Seek out Oscar at Oceana/Seaside Grill, Marlon and Juan Enrique at El Patio, and Alan at Portofino and you won’t be disappointed!
The lobby bar is a nice place to have a drink before dinner, and Jerry, the bartender there, will quickly dispense your drink of choice with a smile.
We had two different treatments at the Spa, a Swedish massage and the exfoliation. Both were excellent. The facilities are very nice and relaxing. The prices are pretty steep, but if you take advantage of the specials or coupons it’s much more reasonable.
All the rooms have a very similar layout, but the major difference is the view. I highly recommend upgrading to the ocean view. Being able to watch the sunset from your balcony or listen to the waves break on the beach really heightens the enjoyment of the beautiful rooms. Higher floors have better views, especially in the ocean tower. Our maid did a great job keeping our room clean during our stay, even in spite of our managing to drag in a sizeable amount of sand from the beach! The resort-wide wifi is up and running, although there did seem to be periods where it would go down. We used it and the Dreams app to call home several times without any problems.
Both the pool and beach areas are kept remarkably clean. Chairs in both locations were plentiful, although shade could be in short supply. Drink service was never an issue, and if you’re sitting in Julio’s section you’re never more than 5 minutes from another drink! There seemed to be more vendors on the beach this year, but a simple “no” sent them on their way. There is lots of wildlife to see including dolphins and rays. The hotel is on a beautiful stretch of beach and you can walk for miles. Last year we did walk all the way to Bucerias to the north, but it took us almost two hours, and I would strongly suggest paying the very reasonable cab fare instead.
It was nice upgrading to the Preferred Club, because you don’t have to wait in line to check in, you have the best views, and the snacks/drinks steps from your room are a nice bonus. The Preferred Concierge, Vidal, will take excellent care of you for the duration of your stay. He is more than willing to assist you with anything you might need. Ask him to make you one of his famous cappuccinos and you won’t be disappointed!
Overall, the resort does a phenomenal job of making you feel welcome and ensuring you’ll enjoy your vacation. We had a bit of rain this year, but there isn’t one thing about the trip I would change. This was our second visit and it definitely won’t be our last!
Spring for the ocean view- you won't regret it!
