“Beachfront highrises offer many options”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 week ago

Three couples stayed in a oceanfront 3BR/3BA apartment on floor 11 of the G (Cabrillo) building in mid-April. Great accommodations. Poor maid service. Too few towels. Pools are nice with some heated, some not. Not much sun on the buildings, and pools in the shade early and late. One elevator was not working, then both went out. Not a big deal. Just used the service elevator for one day! Staff was friendly and helpful. We're all golfers but didn't play the course. It looked in terrible shape, though.

We arrived at Las Palomas April 5, 2015. It is a nice resort if you don't mind staying at a huge complex. The grounds and pools were very well maintained by the employees and the numerous security people made sure no guest got out of line, which included no throwing of balls in the pools. Most of the rooms have ocean views. The beach comes and goes depending on the tide. My family was disappointed because there was no pier to fish from. We were able to horseback ride on the beach which was nice. Also, jet skis and banana boat rides were available. We booked a sunset dinner cruise which was the absolute worst I've ever had. Boat was a dump. Dinner was fish tacos, 1 for a child 2 for adults. I passed on that and we got dinner after the cruise. We did book a half day fish trip for a very reasonable price and the kids did catch some fish. The town is primitive with dirt roads in most places but we were able to find a good grocery store. The condo we rented was quite nice and fairly well stocked and maintained. We had a 3 BR, 2 bath. My biggest complaint about this resort was the maid service which was practically non-existent. We had to request towels and wash cloths and bath mats. They cleaned the floor once all week. Sometimes they made the beds and others not. Also, the bartenders at the pool bar were the most unfriendly bartenders I have ever encountered at a resort. A Mexican beer was $4. There were a lot of waiters running around the huge pool area taking orders for drinks and food. A hamburger and a sprite were $17 and took 45 minutes to get. So I would say for the quality the food was a little pricey. I have to say I am biased because I love the Caribbean and this place though on the ocean was a desert dust bowl. A few scattered palm trees and the rest was dry and very unappealing. Would I go here again, no. But not because of the resort, just because of the location. However, it was about a 9 hr drive from our home north of L.A. so we didn't have to pay for air for 8 people and the condo price was about half what we paid in Belize. But, I would be more than willing to increase the cost and go back to Belize.

Room Tip: We used VRBO to book and got a much better price for our condo than if we had booked thru the resort...

It is hard to please everyone but this resort was a winner with our group of 8 senior citizens. We stayed in a penthouse on 15th floor. Beautiful, spacious, with a fabulous views of ocean and pools. Employees of the resort can be seen everywhere painting, cleaning and mowing lawns. Everyone was friendly and helpful. The food at the poolside bistro wasn't good and the $13USD breakfast buffet in the hotel restaurant wasn't worth the price. Too long of wait at omelette station. Prepare your own food in your condo. Bring your own beach towels to avoid a security deposit for resort pool towels. Also, bring flotation items if you plan to float the lazy river. Some pools have very cold water, others are heated and comfortable. This is a big resort and you will have to wear wrist bands. We will ask to have them put on our ankles next time to prevent scratches on our bodies and snagged clothing. Overall our stay at Las Palomas was great and we will be staying here again. To those of you considering a stay here, remember this is Mexico. Things will not be in perfect working order at times. Try to be patient and polite. Have a beer by the pool and I bet your needs will be met ASAP. We will be staying here again.

I've been coming to Puerto Penasco for years but always stayed at my condo in another resort down the beach. I'm sorry I didn't discover Las Palomas sooner. This place is in a class of its own - the pool area is huge and has many diverse sunbathing areas. We hardly had to go grocery shopping or dine out because the room service which was always amazing and reasonable. The pool bar and grill also has amazing food at very cheap prices. During our stay, there were two bands that performed on stage near the pool, making it a very fun atmosphere. I can't wait to return!

This hotel/ condos has different buildings for which some units have permanent residents and some of the units are used for vacationers. The unit we stayed in was very clean and equipped with a kitchen. The only negative thing I can say is the toilet did not work the last day of our trip. The shower fixtures needed to be more secure.
The whole complex is kept very clean. The beach in front of the complex is made of broken sea shells and when the tide goes low, you can see the sand.

Room Tip: Corner suites are roomy

Let's start with the pros: The outside pool area is amazing. The condo we had was in phase 2 I understand the phase 1 units or not as nice. Our unit was very nicely decorated. It was also very well-kept. No mold in the bathrooms clean water drains in the sinks in the bathrooms. Very spacious. A wonderful view. Beach toys and chairs were available in that unit. Full-size washer and dryer. All the dishes bowls pots and pans we needed. The balcony had a wonderful ceiling fan and a huge umbrella to block the sun. The water pressure in the shower was decent. The bed was very comfortable with lots of pillows. Love the fact that there were ceiling fans throughout the unit. The air conditioning ,when it worked, got really cold. Now for the cons: The first day our room was cleaned they did not leave us enough towels and it took hours before we could get someone to deliver them. Toilet broke and it took quite a while for that to be fixed as well. Air AC broke the second night we were there. The AC was fixed rather quickly the next morning. The overall problem with this resort is it lacks customer service both at the front desk and in response time to problems.

My fiance and I recently spent three days/two nights at Las Palomas. Our intention was to possibly buy a vacation place down there. This was our first trip there. Our thoughts:
1. The resort is decent. All the units are bascially owned by individuals so you rent a unit from the owner and the management company takes a slice of the room rate. Pool was very nice. Grounds were well kept. Beach is nice but a ton of locals trying to sell you things on the beach. Very annoying.
2. Place looks like it is on lockdown. There are tons of security people floating around but they're all basically mall cops. We will get back to this in a minute.
3. Ton of 20 year olds floating around, mostly male. They are typical 20 year olds: loud, obnoxious and boisterous.
4. The area of Shady Beach is odd to look at. As you drive up to it, you see about 12 large condo type buildings. As you get closer, you see that only 6 or so of them are complete and the rest had been started and stopped, just skeletons. From what we researched, the place was extremely hard hit by the fiscal crisis and it has in no way come back.
5. Housekeeping is non existent. They came one time for 2 minutes and gave us 2 towels, not to mention they came at 6 pm.
6. There are emply buildings all around Puerto Penasco. Place looks like Beirut in the 70's.
7. The town is really the eye opener. Literally dirt streets, a ton of closed storefronts, no signs on the streets, very sketchy. The military is driving around with machine gun mounts on the top of pick ups. You see them everywhere. Very disconcerning. Skeletal buildings all around the town.
8. Two restaurant comments: went one night to El Capitain. Very good but you really need four wheel drive to get to the place. Its on the top of the hill by Rocky Point and its all dirt and rock road. Second restaurant: Mary's: weak.
8. Our conclusion is this: in about 20 years, the place may be something. There is a reason that the condos are so cheap. The place lacks ammenities, driveable streets and many other common things you get to expect when you travel. We understand that Mexico is a third world country. This is proof of that. There is no ryhme or reason to some of the building going on there and both of us felt unsafe.
9. We have decided not to buy. Maybe one day when the place grows up and someone has a plan for it.
