“Tranquility with quality”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2009

With virtually no neighbouring premises, Damson Dene has a tranquil setting. Not only dog friendly, but human friendly too! As usual nowadays the staff are multi-national and gave excellent service. Dining room is spacious and tables not jammed up too close to one another. One room we occupied had obviously been refurbished whilst the other although still awaiting its turn, was clean and comfortable. Would be happy to return.

Just returned from a lovely and relaxing 2 night stay at the Damson Dene Hotel. I was put off by the previous postings that i read but please ignore them! My husband and I booked Dinner bed and breakfast, and I'm glad we did because the food was excellent, well presented, lovely and hot. Even though there were only 4 main coursesto choose from it was a good variety, and something to please everyone. Breakfast was good too - just what you need before a day out walking in the lovely countryside. The hotel is down a dark windy lane, with not much else nearby so it was nice not to have to venture out again at night. Nice welcoming bar area, with local ales, and very good prices (much cheaper than the large hotel chains). The best bit for me was the leisure facilities - particularly the jacuzzi to soothe aching legs!. Pool and steam room also great too (towels provided free of charge at reception). The hotel is obviously an old property but it is plain to see that the owners care and are modernising and updating. Our room looked recently refurbished, excellent finishing touches, and the wall mouted digital flat screen tv was an added bonus. friendly and courteous staff, can't wait to be able to visit again.

Hotel appeared to be welcoming from the front and all public rooms were well maintained and appeared to be cosy, however we brought our dog and asked if there was another exit other than main entrance to take him out and we were told that we could take him through fire exit. On opening door of fire exit we were confronted by a metal stairway strewn with soggy cigarette ends and there were many of them. Bins at rear were overflowing, I believe that this area was staff quarters.
The food was well presented and of excellent quality but I'm afraid it was insufficient after a long day touring around, I left the table still hungry. Vegetables would consist of one carrot, one piece of brocolli and a small circular mound of potato, it all tasted very nice but was never worth £22.50p per person.
All staff were very pleasant and obliging especially in the dining room.
The hotel is supposed to be dog friendly yet I only found one bin outside to dispose of waste.
Rooms were adequate but a little shabby.
Whilst eating at this hotel my mind was always going back to the rear of the hotel and its untidy appearance and the "fag ends". A pity because behind the scenes does matter to us.

location is very good for a getaway break,
Double room was nice size clean and homely.
As my husband is disabled we were upset there is no tv 90% of the time, all because the area has gone digital. Please try and do something about this.

I booked the Damson Dene hotel for my wife, 2 year old child, Mother & father in law and 2 nieces.

The hotels first impression is good both outside and front of house. The check in was ok but lets face it it’s not a major chain.

Our room (21) was a good size. We were still able to get around the room once we had put the hotels travel cot. It was clean fresh smelling and decorated to a good standard including flat screen TV. The en suite shower room was to a very high standard. Hot water on demand and very clean.

The room was quiet at night and the bed very comfortable with fresh clean linen.

The swimming pool / facilities were well enjoyed by all. The changing facilities were clean and modern. It makes a change that you didn’t have to use a coin to operate the lockers.

The bar was clean and welcoming. A good choice of lager, beer and spirits is was available.

Breakfast was excellent. Buffet style; help yourself to cereal, porridge, juice, fruit as well as full English. All to a high standard and the breakfast staff could not do enough for you.

Overall I would ask you to dismiss the old poor reviews. We were 50/50 after reading the review but both rooms were great. No Damp and no rotting windows. We left 100% happy. Thanks for a good night stay.

The location is beautiful, quiet and the room (family room away from the main hotel) was clean. The decor is plain but workable. Food was good, hot and freshly home cooked, Both starters and puddings were delicious. Breakfasts were by comparison unimaginative and not of the same standard. Having the pool/steam room/sauna was really nice too and other than the sign telling us 'not to shave in the steam room' (yuck - who does that?) was very pleasant. Quite clearly it represented good value for money.

However, it does have it's down side. I stayed for just under a week, but never felt home from home, more tolerated than welcomed. It seems a hotel expecting short stay guests rather than holiday makers. Once we missed our slot at dinner (yes, you have to conform to one of their 3 seatings) and were glowered at by the waitress, who sighed that she would check with chef if we could be accommodated - there were 5 other diners.. The evening was rescued by the good food and very professional Canadian waiter. Housekeeping on the other hand seems to be of the reluctant nature. Bedcovers were thrown over whatever was on the bed, at one point even a damp raincoat. Unfortunately, this did nothing to make the exceedinly hard beds any more comfortable.

Bit of a strange one this. The lounge area looked comfortable and inviting, but the room was dirty and the window frame was so rotten that it had bits of wood falling out. We asked to change our room/upgrade but were told they had no empty rooms. If it had been earlier in the day we would have just left. The bathroom door was very dirty as was the interior of the entrance door. Not good.
The breakfast was good.
