“Out of the way”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2013

Stayed with my husband on a Groupon deal in August last year for my birthday.
We should have been in an executive room but none were available for our stay so we were in a standard room on the ground floor. The room was small and reasonably clean but we got a lot of noise overnight as our window backed onto the staff car park. If it wasn't water torture from the rain coming off the roof onto a large plastic container outside it was staff shouting and revving cars. Suffice to say, at least on our first night, we didn't get much sleep.
Our deal included an evening meal on the first night which was very enjoyable as was the breakfast each morning.
For us, the hotel was too remote, which meant either driving or getting an expensive taxi to Bowness if you want to dine out.

Thank you for your review and the 4-star rating. I am happy you chose us to celebrate your birthday. I am also pleased you enjoyed your meals with us. I do apologise if you were kept awake for any reason. I can't imagine our staff would have behaved in such a manner; they never had before or since your stay. Thanks again.

Having not watched 'The Hotel' I had no idea what to expect when my family and I stayed here as a group of 18 in February, our numbers changed at the last minute, and the hotel still managed to accommodate us. The rooms were quite small but clean and the staff were very friendly Wayne in particular couldn't do enough to ensure we had everything we wanted, they were also great with the kids. The food every evening was superb and had a great selection, we were also asked if there was anything we'd like to see on the menu, and at the suggestion of lamb for the adults and a pie for the childrens menu both were on the menu the following evening. The kids loved the pool, and the lounge area was great for drinks in the evening.

We do love hosting groups, especially giving them their own menu selections; lamb is always popular! Thanks for staying with us and for mentioning our staff in your review. We hope the next time you're looking for a group break (or any break!) you'll think of us. Thanks again.

We used a groupon deal and felt very lucky to have chosen this hotel. The food was superb, ambience perfect, and the staff friendly, helpful and cheerful. I loved my swim in the pool and the extra facilities were super. The bedroom was spotless and comfortable . however be careful as the postcode can take you to a nearby farm!! I would love to go again
June

Room Tip: able to look over the duck pond

Thanks for staying with us and for posting this nice 5-star review. You outlined exactly what we are going for here; superb food, great staff, quality facilities and a great atmosphere. I'm also pleased you enjoyed our location even if you were detoured to the nearby farm! Hopefully see you in June.

I booked a 2 night Groupon deal as part of a birthday gift for my partner. What a HUGE mistake.
Checked in found room down some stairs ...room 34.
Opened the door and was hit by an unbearable smell of damp dogs.
Dog hairs on the carpet, mud stains on the bed valance and dirt marks on the duvet which had been hidden on the inside of the bed.opened the window after pulling back an ancient old piece of net curtain.
The toilet had excrement encrusted on the outside of the pan.
We went straight to reception and asked for it all to be cleaned whilst we went out.
Sheets were changed but the rest remained filthy.
Had a terrible night there but had to wait until the next morning to find a different place to stay.
One positive is the food was fantastic. Far superior for this hotel. So disappointed with The Damson Dene.
Such a shame...beautiful location,good food.
Maybe it would be an idea for you to have DOG HOTEL written as a headline .Also why don't you use the cottages for dogs and owners so the rest of us don't have to endure the smell and hairs of someone else's pet.

I was very disappointed to have read this review as it certainly does not reflect the hotel. There is no way a room in that condition would have been let as all of our rooms are cleaned to the highest standard. The only mention made to reception was of a slightly marked duvet and valence, which we of course apologised for and had rectified immediately. Otherwise, the room was spotless. We are proud of our dog-friendly nature and thus make no secret of it. It is well advertised on our website. We go to great lengths to ensure that guests with and without dogs are well looked after and are cleaning regime is second to none. I am sorry that we were not the hotel for this guest and wish them well in the future.

Review title almost says it all. Food was average. If you want a decent meal go to the Punch Bowl a couple of miles away.Rooms, well the whole hotel has seen better days. Polish staff were efficient. Just glad the visit was a well intentioned gift and we had't paid for it. Looks like it could do with good management.

Room Tip: Only saw the one room there might be better ones.

This review was a shame to read. We get so many excellent reviews of our food that an "average" rating always comes as a shock. The leisure facilities are cleaned daily and are in no way a health risk. I am sorry that we were the hotel for them, but it must be stated that the vast majority of our guests find us to be a great place to stay.

We stayed with friends, £159 for two nights b&b with dinner on the first evening. We were given cottages 1 and 3 at the bottom of the car park.

The 'cottage' is on two floors. The ground floor has a twin bedroom and the bathroom. The first floor has a double bed, views of the hotel and a seating area. Freeview is available in each bedroom from the wall mounted tv's. There is central heating throughout, the rooms are more than warm enough, we slept with the windows open while it snowed during the night. The bedrooms aren't the most modern but they are clean and comfortable, the bathroom is of a higher standard

The hotel has free wi-fi (not in the cottages) which we used while relaxing in the bar on Friday evening. There are great views across the hotel grounds from the bar (and the restaurant) and do try a pint of Damson Dene ale.

We ate in the restaurant on Friday evening, expectations weren't high as the meal was included in the price... Pork belly and black pudding to start and it was superb. Venison for main course, cooked pink, again top notch. Cheesecake with popping candy for dessert. All three courses were excellent, I was happily surprised.

Breakfast was a choice of fruit, cereal, yogurt, juices and toast with a selection of honey, marmite, jam, marmalade etc. There was a hot buffet with sausage, bacon, beans, mushrooms, fried bread, tomato and a choice of scrambled, fried or poached eggs, plus as much tea of coffee as you want.

There are some supplements both in the evening and at breakfast, such as steak or smoked salmon and scrambled eggs.

There is a bar menu which we didn't try. It seemed overpriced to me but that's just my opinion.

We were going to play golf on Sunday while the ladies used the hotel leisure facilities but four inches of snow on Saturday night put a stop to that. Instead we joined the ladies. The lockers are £1, the towels are free from reception and the changing rooms are clean. The pool is heated to a very comfortable temperature and is clean and in perfect condition. The steam room is fine and after being a bit thick I eventually managed to work out how to get the sauna going. There is a three person hot tub at the side of pool but we managed to fit four people in it. The gym looks to be well equipped with up to date machines and has views across the hotel grounds.

We decided against having treatments, I thought they were overpriced compared to other places we've stayed, but again that's just my opinion.

The lounge in the reception area is full of huge deep sofa's and armchairs, the type you can just fall into. After using the leisure facilities I was so close to falling asleep in one.

The staff were excellent. Every one of them was polite, friendly and helpful... the barman helped us find a local restaurant for Saturday night, reception charged my camera battery after we had checked out etc etc.

One minor comment would be to put some information in the rooms. Local attractions would be good, but some information on the hotel would be even better. We had no idea what time breakfast was and there was no information on how to phone reception from the room phone. Things such as menu's, what time food is served until, what facilities are available etc.

We would be happy to return.

This may be the most thorough review I have yet read and it was a joy to read. It should really help anyone when they are trying to decide where to stay in the Lakes, so thank you for posting it. We are very happy you enjoyed your stay. I have not much more to add except thanks for your recommendations and that we hope you'll visit us again!

My daughter got us a 2 night say through groupon for our christmas present.
I really didnt know what to expect but have to say from booking the stay and through the short stay i was quite impressed.
All of the staff are very friendly and nothing is too much trouble.
We were in the bluebell suite and it was avery nice room with its own little patio where i could feed the ducks in the morning,we also had a spa bath which came in very handy after a tiring day climbing mountains (orgainsed by my husbands brother who should have been a goat ).
On our first night through the groupon deal we had a 4 course meal which was wonderful and 2 breakfast that were very nice too. The view from the dining room in the morning whilst having breakfast is wonderful looking out over the small lake in the grounds there was snow on the ground which made it even better.
Nearly forgot The lovely open fire surrounded by lots of soft and very comfy leather settees is a spot just to chill with glass in hand .
All in all a very nice hotel and i would recommend it the only thing is it is quite isolated so someone would have to be happy doing the driving but this didnt impact on our stay give it a try and enjoy !!

Room Tip: Suites on lower floor have little extras ie: spa baths and patios but if doors open expect traffic n...

I really enjoyed reading this review; thanks for posting it and for visiting us. This is the first I've heard of the ducks making it to outside Bluebell so that is interesting to know! I am pleased you found us to be relaxing after getting out in the Lakes. It can be tiring so it is nice to have a warm and friendly place to come back to. Thanks again!
