“Our favourite stop-over en route to Scotland”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2014

We have been regular visitors to the hotel since our daughter moved to the Highlands some years ago. It is about half-way from our home to hers, and tucked away some few hundred metres from the rear of Tebay Services on the M6. The location is wonderful with views over moorland to distant mountains. We always stay for dinner as it is great value, and always superbly prepared. There is a large lounge with adjacent bar made even more inviting by the roaring log fire throughout the winter. Ample, dedicated car parking means only a short walk to reception, and that is important as the position in bad weather is quite exposed - lashing rain and gale force winds could make arrival difficult otherwise. Always friendly and helpful staff throughout the hotel make our short breaks even more enjoyable, and coupled with special offers this really is an affordable hotel that gives great value for money. The dining room is fronted by large glass windows outside which is a totally realistic stream with waterfalls. If it is very cold we recommend asking for a table that is not in the area adjacent to the windows as that can be colder than the inner part of the restaurant. All bedrooms are ensuite, delightfully furnished with comfy beds and thick duvets, good fluffy towels and smart new TVs, with coffee/tea making facilities. We always look forward to our next visit.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the moorland and mountains have nicer views than those looking across towards the Tebay...

What a wonderful surprise!!! We booked this hotel as an overnight stop enroute to a weekend to celebrate my husband's birthday, and the whole experience has been amazing. From the warm friendly greeting at reception, the cosy log fire in the residents' lounge and bar, the lovely clean and tastefully furnished room, the comfy bed and rain shower, the fab view and the breakfast - all fantastic!! But the most surprising thing was the fabulous dinner - what a hidden gem the Westmorland is, an AA rosette restaurant with superb service and attention to detail - they even put a "happy birthday" on my husband's dessert plate without me asking, they had just picked up it was his birthday and did everything they could to make it special - this is a very special place and we will definitely be back!!!

You would not know that this hotel is linked to a motorway services. The Tebay services are different as I think they are the only ones owned by local people, not a multinational company.

The smell of a woodfire in the lounge, good rooms with locally produced soaps, and an excellent restaurant all make it different. We had a lovely meal (the wood pigeon starter was really good), but the downside was the speed of service at both dinner and breakfast. One couple left before their desert arrived as it had taken so long.

The setting is wonderful, and we even fed the ducks out of out bedroom window.

We booked an overnight Dinner Bed & Breakfast rate for January at short notice for a Saturday Night stay. This hotel is in a peaceful setting with amazing views of the countryside. There is a large reception with a bar and open fire and comfy sofas if you would like to relax. The room was spacious, modern and clean with a nice view over the meadows and fells. For dinner and breakfast we were seated right by the huge restaurant window looking out over the hills. The food was excellent. The staff were polite and friendly and we cannot fault the service. The hotel is 2 hours drive from Leeds which makes it easily accessible for the weekend and is a good base to explore the Lake District.

This hotel had been recommended by a friend as a convenient stop on the way to Scotland which it was. The room was a good size and we liked the biscuits provided! However, the food in the restaurant was overpriced the service was rather slow. The choice at breakfast is not great if compared to one of the chain hotels. Not much for vegetarians!

Great location for the traveller, lovely open fire and bar. Restaurant has great views. Menu too pretentious would be better if it had one or two decent English dishes of the day. Very comfortable quiet rooms.

Room Tip: Close to the motorway over Shap Fell but despite this unpromising location remarkably good, with com...
