Great value budget hotel, well placed to serve Exeter Airport.
This was my first stay at a Hampton by Hilton hotel. At a price my company booked, with quite short notice, of £77/night b&b, it compared with Premier Inn pricing in the South West. To compare the two budget hotel chains, there's not much to separate them, from my experience. This Hampton boasts a gym, more style and a better attached restaurant option, where a Premier would beat it on breakfast, bigger desks and better staff. But it's all by a very small amount, they are very much the same standard and, in this case, there's no rival Premier Inn option nearby.
If you're arriving in the dark, following a Sat Nav to the hotel's postcode, you'll find yourself along a dark, empty, single track country lane; keep going, it is down there!
I ate at the attached Marcos restaurant, which is a Marco Pierre White New York Italian. There was a wide selection of options and the food was of a good standard. It represented reasonable value for money, too. Otherwise, the bar/snack menu is very limited and there isn't room service available. Breakfast was mediocre. It appeared completely unmanned when I went and, despite a fair range of buffet options, the quality was a bit lacking.
Rooms are a high point. Well appointed and laid out, making the most of their space. Bathroom swapped a bath for a walk-in shower, which suited me well. It is also very well insulated from any noise from the airport (not quite so well from the neighbouring rooms, though). Having arrived in the dark, I was pleasantly surprised to open my curtains in the morning, on my room facing the rear of the hotel, to find a fantastic view of rolling farm land. A nice plus. Rooms sport good size flat tv's, comfortable beds and free Wi-Fi.
I found the fitness room great in the morning and I was the only guest using it. There are a couple treadmills and bikes, multi exercise weight machines and a large selection of free weights. All clean and new. Although only described as a "24 hour fitness room", it would put a few four star hotel's "gymnasiums", that I have stayed at recently, to shame.
Only slight dampener to the stay were the staff. Although pleasant, at every interaction I had on reception, they would always prioritise a ringing phone or another colleague over you, half way through dealing with your check-in, check-out, reservation booking, etc., leaving you standing waiting twiddling your thumbs. Mildly irritating.
Overall, for about £75/night b&b, this hotel represents fantastic value for money and is incredibly convenient for Exeter Airport.
