“Great Wee Getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2012

We had never been down as far as this in Scotland and we were actually surprised how beautiful it is. Stayed here for 2 nights and loved it, was very comfortable and we were made to feel very welcome my Hilary, Tim and Ted the Dog. Breakfast was great and Tim's poach egg was cooked to perfection, the rest of it was none to shabby either. The kingsize en-suite was excellent, the views were superb and the tea and coffee available was very welcome with the cold weather. Home made shortbread, comfy bed and great location what more could you ask.
Will definately use Hawthorn House everytime I'm down that way, great base.

We were on a memory trail as Andy's mum came from nearby Sorbie where he spent his summer holidays helping his Grampa on the croft. We loved Hawthorn House it was very warm and welcoming we had the Kingsize en suite room which was beautiful, very comfy bed lovely sea views immediately outside our window. Bath robes, even decaf tea bags which is very unusual, home made shortbread, filtered water and fresh milk in a cooler. The breakfasts were delicious how spoiled were we! Thank you so much Tim and Hilary as you would have gathered our visit meant a great deal to Andy and you helped make it very special for us both.

Handy for Wigtown book town (20 mins drive away on quiet roads) but away from the crowds, Hawthorn House gave me a haven in the festival. Tim kindly booked me a dinner table at the locally favoured restaurant and Hilary baked me fresh gluten free bread. Breakfast included lots of local produce and 2 types of honey, yum. I went for the smoked salmon caught in Galloway with free range eggs but there was a wide choice for all dietary preferences. Nice touches in the room were a carafe of water, chilled milk and a bathrobe. Good linen, warm and comfy bed with decent pillows meant I slept like a log.

Room Tip: the single room has a double bed so you will be spoilt for choice. if you want a sea view this room...

We have been staying with Tim and Hilary for several years. The accomodation is great with dressing gowns provided for guest use and the seaward facing bedrooms have fantastic views! The standard of the breakfast is excellent with lots of choice and really well cooked. Tim and Hilary are welcoming and friendly . Hawthorn house is on the outskirts of Portwilliam and its a pleasant (level) stroll into the village . Hawthorn house is to be recommended

It was the best BB I have ever stayed in with my wife and two boys. It was clean, child friendly and nothing was spared to make our stay unforgettable. The owners were friendly and so helpful - even lending us some sand buckets so that the children could play on the beach. The breakfast was out of this world and the seaview - absolutely stunning!

The owners, Tim and Hilary welcomed me into their home , evan though I had turned up mid morning unannounced. Although I'd planned to stay 2 nights, Tim informed me that the single room was only available that night, I thanked him and said I had a couple of 'phone nos. for other B & Bs I could try for the 2nd night. A short time later Tim and Hilary said that they rejigged the room allocations for the new arrivals and I could have the room both nights, absolutely brilliant of them. The room with tea and coffee available were first class, I particulary enjoyed the home made shortbread, left with my cuppa in the mornings. Breakfast was delecious, and piping hot. A first class service all round, I would have no hesitation in recommending Hawthorn House to any family or friend heading their way. Cheers, Tony D.

My brother and I stayed for one night 7th August, as we were on a business trip. Within 10 minutes of our arrival, we were already planning when we would stay for a leisure break. Tim and Hilary are perfect hosts. Warm, friendly accommodating, nothing was too much trouble and the even arranged beautiful weather for us! We were also booked into the Clansman restaurant which was also fantastic.
All rooms are spotless and well appointed and our breakfast was definately the best breakfast by far, that we have ever had. Only the finest quality ingredients were used, but a special mention to the homemade bread, and the homemade shortbread and filtered water which was in our rooms.
Tim and Hilary, you are a delightful couple, with a beautiful establishment which I am sure you are extremely proud of.
We look forward to seeing you in the near future!

And to anyone reading this review and thinking of staying, DONT HESITATE!

Room Tip: All rooms are spacious and quiet, but if you want as spectular sea view, book one of the double room...
