“so overbooked they don't care if they are accommodating guests adequately”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2013

Pros: central to most activities, ok snorkelling, close to marina, adequately clean, Japanese restaurant was good

Cons: the hotel overbooks to the point they cannot accomodate even the most basic of requests. My boyfriend and I had 1 request - king size bed. I was first off the bus and first in line to Register in the lobby where I was told there was not 1 room available in the entire hotel (& adjoining hotel) that had a king size bed. We were Fred & Wilma for 3 nights in 2 double beds.

Two single women - behind us in the check in line - requested 2 double beds, and received a King bed with an upgrade to the Privelaged section.

3 days of going back to the lobby to request a change - was not until I brought up trip advisor that suddenly a room with a king bed became available.

late check out - IF you can get a late checkout it is $40 CAN. There were 6 of us in our group, checkout is noon, our bus did not leave to the airport until 11:30pm, all of us were refused late checkout - at both lobbies. I persisted and finally got a small room for the 6 of us to share until 6pm.

I have never seen front desk staff so programmed to say NO. I have stayed at Breezes, Bahia Principe, Palladium, Las Brisas, and I have NEVER seen such unaccomodating staff.

NEVER AGAIN

Room Tip: section 1 was close to everything, we finally had a room with king bed in 1011

Our second visit here, 1st time in 2008. Overall a decent trip, the weather although warm was cloudy quite a bit and we had mostly red flag days except for 2 yellows in a weeks vacation. Food was ok, service was great.
We had a standard room in the 2 building. Very quiet area, but central to everything. No alarm clocks or fridges in rooms. You only get a few water bottles in your room first day then you need to refill them on your own. I hear the privileged rooms for extra $'s had these amenities that were lacking in the standard rooms.
We traveled with teenagers and there was def a lot of activities to keep them occupied. The sports center has pool tables and ping pong, a great way to meet other people.
The beach IS rocky, water shoes def recommended. Snorkeling is awesome as there is a reef just feet away from shore. Not the sandy beaches of Cuba by far.. And can't walk on beach very far, just to the right to walk thru the adjacent hotel then back. However great walk in the gated area of Puerto Aventuras... So beautiful and safe.
We did the ATV tour, with a visit to a cenote and snorkeling, was awesome, even though rough for a beginner rider.
Overall a good trip.

Having arrived with extended family all looked promising good surroundings decent food/facilities friendly staff hope was in the air ,daytime fine ,upto midnight all bars busy to be expected fine, what we did not expect from midnight to five in the morning every night was the constant flow of loud mouthed obnoxious drunken scum (American French and Spanish)that seemed thourorly intent on destroying any chance of a few minutes rest ,hence having booked 2weeks holiday and despite the best efforts of representatives and staff and at great expense after8days it was more acceptable to leave one week earlier than planed than stay any longer and loose our sanity unfortunate

Room Tip: Do not stay on the yuca tan side if you want to remain sane

Well this is two resorts connected together. You just enter at opposite ends of the resort. We hvae had better vacations in the past throught out Mexico and Dominican, but out of all of them this was the one we were least pleased with. It started off checking in and they try to get yout o upgrade to a different room for extra money without even seeing the room I have. Once I said know they wanted to upgrade me to a higher room for more money. Again I said no. Get to the room and its and not bad. Basic room. They dont tell you that you have to pay for your room safe. The lunch restaurant was infested with birds so you couldnt even eat without being dive bombed. The serving staff at the yucatan said swim up bar were rude. my 4 year old and I swam up and waited 25 minutes and still didnt get served, no-one wanted to come down to the pool side. all 5 servers were on the upper level searving other people and chatting with each other. When I went up to the other said and asked if anyone was working on the pool side. He said no and turned away. I asked he could send someone down for all of us waiting again he said not right now he was busy. And again he turned away and was talking to another employee. That's a little annoying. ALL SHOPS IN THE RESORT DO NOT TAKE ANY FORM OF CASH. You have to charge it to your room and pay for it when you check out. Then when you check out they only accept Canadian no Peso and no USD. On day 4 the power went out in the morning and almost all the bars were closed and the resturants werent open either. Just the Buffet's with limited lighting. None in the lights in the rooms or hallways were on with the backup generators. People were stumbling to find their way around and some people got injured falling down stairs in the dark. We had to fumble around in the dark to find the reception desk just to beg to get a candle to put in the room for some light. Once all the problems were fixed at the hotel the last 2 days were fine. but al I said not the best vacation but definately not the worst. If i had a choice to come back to this location. The answere would be no. I'd rather goto the Pacific side like Manzanillo Mexico or to Punta Cana The Dominican Republic. But just my option.

Just returned from a week at the Catalonia Feb 8-15. This being our first all inclusive wasnt sure what to expect after taking 7 cruises and visited Disnely numerous times. A brief overview of the disappointments. We had booked a "king" sized bed with our agent yet when we finally got our room, three hours after arriving found two double beds, although the room was quite nice and very clean. We took the room in stride. Next was the safe which we had to pay $3 a day for. There was no mechanism inside, so we called the number listed for assitance and well guess it was nap time since we never did get an answer. The next day we finally complained to Richard from Transat vacations and we got our safe fixed, well for one day anyways. After the insides were installed we locked it, we returned and opened it to obtain our possesions and well it broke, nap time again because well the next day it was repaired. On the second day we also never did get our room cleaned and when we complained to the girl from Transat we were told must have been our fault, we hung the please clean our room card out maybe we hung it backwards. We also expressed our concern about the two beds and were told we should never have been told that we could have a king since 80% of the rooms were doubles. However for a small fee you can upgrade. Yea right. The food, well if your a picky eater.... sorry. The food in the buffets was for the most part very unappatizing and poor selection. However the alacartes that we visited were better. We visited the steak house three times (hint hint) and the japanese restaurant once. The wait for the steak house was up to an hour as ther seating is limited but only had a 10 minute wait at the Japanese restaurant. The pools were spotless and the beach was nice. Yes its rocky but its no different than most of the resorts in the area. There isnt much to do around the resort if you like to shop except for limited shops in the marina, there are a lot of restaurants located at the marina also which looked very good. If you want to shop you must take a cab, bus or excursion into town. We tried the excursion which was late arriving so we lost about 30 minutes of the supposed 3 hours you get. Over all not a good excurions. We visited the ruins at Ek Balam on the advise of the Transat girl and well its a great bus ride, we spent about 5 hours on a bus that day. Not enough time at the ruins, and the swiming in the cave although fun was so so. Would recomend Rio Secreto as it is much more spectactulor and the water is warmer. We did the tour with one other couple, it was a short bus ride, less expensive and definatley more dramatic. When we checked out we were billed for the two days the safe did not operate however they were willing to call someone to have them come look at our bill if we were willing to hold up the other 10 couples in line waiting to check out and get on their bus to the airport so we sucked it up. Also apopeared to be mostly french people, the two resorts are more like two lobbies.

Room Tip: Try to get a fourth floor room facing the Dreams. It was quite, no foot traffic, overlooks the pool...

My husband and I just returned from a week at the Catalonia Yucatan situated in Puerto Adventurous. We upgraded to privileged prior to our trip to include a king size bed, upgraded choice of alcohol, safe included, stocked fridge and with a top floor room. We got our top floor but never saw a king size bed and gave up after 3 days of asking, The room was nice actually we were put on the newer Riveria Maya side, very clean but poor lighting. The beds though were very comfortable. Cleaning staff were tremendous and obviously took pride in their work. As a matter of fact were the friendliest staff in the resort.

The grounds and pool areas were immaculate and well manicured. The scenery of the ocean and lagoon, very picturesque. As read in previous reviews it is rockier than Playa del Carmen beaches so you will need your water shoes. They do have many fish and the best was being able to snorkeling daily right at the resort without the price of an excursion.

For food choices; The buffets were average with basically the same food choices daily. The Ala cartes were much better than the buffets with very nice presentation of food and better quality of food and personal service.

We have stayed in the Playacar area numerous times at different resorts. Our comparison of this trip with the others differs as follows. The pool waiter service at this resort was almost none existent until we found "Leo" he saved the day with his genuine smile and service. He was well compensated for his genuine service and attitude. The self service bartenders barely cracked a smile on the most part even with a generous tip. There was an obvious difference between their frozen blended drinks and the ones you watch being poured with a shot from the bottle. We questioned whether the frozen blended drinks had alcohol in them at all. Even with the preferred upgrade if you don't ask for the quality alcohol that you paid for you won't get it.

The entertainment staff was average with the exception of Rickardo from the dance group, whom we had at a previous resort that stood out with his personality, and it was great to see him again. The music around the pool needs some sort of quality upgrading and consistency to be played though out the day, with more variety of various music.

All in all, the resort was beautiful, we had a perfect week of weather and made our own fun with a great group of people we met from Peterborough and Milwaukee. We wouldn't return to this resort just of preference as we missed the Playacar area with better beaches and at other resorts with generally friendlier staff. The friendliness of the Mayan people is why we keep going back to Mexico and this resort sporadically delivered that friendliness. We will definitely be returning but to Playacar area next time.
