“Great family hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2014

Was a wonderful trip with my wife and our 4 year old son. He loved the kids pool and beach. We loved the convenience and surprisingly the meals were really good at the buffet. Only negative was the bed was way to firm for us. Clean resort and friendly staff, excellent family vacation. Look forward to returning soon.

Stayed at this resort with my husband and 3 kids - 13, 9, & 6 in summer 2013. From the get go we were very impressed with the ease of checking in. Upon arrival we were greeted with a drink, even the kids received one. We did not pay for the premium package, but it sure felt like we were receiving premium service. It took us approximately 20 minutes to check in and the concierge was extremely helpful when we giving directions to our room. It took another 15 to book our dinner reservations (its recommended to do this right after checking in...reservations are limited).

Yes, this hotel is MASSIVE and be prepared to walk. But it is also beautifully decorated and landscaped that even my youngest children enjoyed the walks. Needless to say, give yourself time to get to your destinations, rushing will only wear you out faster, take in the scenery and enjoy the beauty of this complex.

The food was delicious for buffet style food. There wasn’t one time that my picky son wasn’t able to find something he liked. The spreads were endless and of great variety. Only minus is that there isn’t anywhere near the pool/beach area to grab a snack, but totally understandable because it helps keep the grounds clean and bug free. We did dine at the Steak restaurant and the Japanese which both had great food.

Rooms are nicely decorated, but most of all...spacious! We are a family of 5 and we were all very comfortable. The beds are not the best, but are decent...I mean really...what do you really expect when on vacation in a foreign country? The rooms are very clean. Housekeeping did a great job with cleaning and re-stocking our fridge with drinks, snacks and extra towels. We did tip on a daily basis and it paid off.

Pools/Beach was unbelievably massive and beautiful. We never had a hard time finding chairs at either even when people would play the chair saving game. Take the time to go snorkelling at the pier, one of our best experiences at Barcelo! There were lots of sea turtles swimming amongst all the people which was exciting for the kiddos and adults. There are a lot of rocks entering the water so just be sure to be careful where you step, but once you get a few feet in you have nothing to worry about. Waters are super calm which makes it a little less stressful when watching the kiddos swimming (no big waves going over their heads).

All in all this was an excellent experience and we definitely plan on going back soon!!!

Room Tip: Be prepared to do lots of walking, but enjoy the views and take your time...it's vacation for cr...

Just returned home today. Overall a great vacation. But people always need to make the most of whatever situation you run into on your vacation.

The good:

Food was excellent. Even buffet was decent.
Drinks great.
Staff, bartenders, waiters, we always tip and it makes a difference.
Resort, beautiful, and well kept.
Pools big and nice. Nice loungers. Nice water park for little kids, made me wish I was 7 years old again.
Beach big, and a lot of palm trees for some shade, and great snorkeling. Lots of fish, turtles.
Room was nice.
On site dolphins, very cool.

The bad:

Resort is way to big. You will have blisters on blisters by the end of the week with all the walking. The rooms are so far from the pool, lobby, restaurants, beach and everything else it is a major hike.
No pool side food like a small grill, again you have to walk a mile to find some lunch.
Restaurants hot, AC turned down or not working??
Beds are hard, but it is Mexico.
AC was broke in our room had to be fixed.
Number of lights were burnt out in room.
Room view sucked, no ocean views at this place unless you want to spend big $$. Our view was jungle behind the adult pool. Tried to upgrade but resort was full we were told.

The ugly:

Spring break in full swing. Drunk high school kids all over. For the most part the majority hung out at what we started calling the M-TV pool at the Barcelo Tropical, but drunken over run was at our pool and the beach. Too much puking and hell raising going on to wee hours of the night.

You can't control the weather and it was very windy all week cancelling all non- motorized water sports, and sitting on the beach was like getting sand blasted. It was disappointing but the wind did keep you cooled off a bit.

We traveled as a couple and do like the smaller adult only resorts, but we took a chance on this resort to save some money. We did have a great time. But honestly I don't believe we would stay here again we will stick with smaller adult only resorts. It is a good place for big familys, and groups, and off course drunken high school kids as well.

Room Tip: Good luck is all I can say on getting a good room.

Dear Jack S.

In fact our resort is big with many green areas and attractions for our guests, where they can always find something for fun, rest and to relax.

During this season we usually have families traveling with teenagers, couples and also people traveling in groups.

We appreciate you comments!

I recently stayed at this property for my senior in high school daughter's spring break trip. While the pools and beach are lovely, and the food decent but not great, there are other things that I find to be unacceptable.

The top two terrible things about this resort are the beds, and the fact that we could almost never eat at one of their restaurants , due to unavailability of reservations. The beds are SO hard that even the 18 year olds were complaining of getting no sleep and being sore. Do yourself a favor and bring a foam topper for your bed. I had read trip advisor and brought one, and was the ENVY of everyone!

The fact that you have to reserve a table at one of the restaurants two to three days in advance if you want a time other than 5:30 or 9:30 p.m. is unacceptable. We paid WAY too much money a day to stay at this place for them to make eating a nice meal SO DIFFICULT.

Lastly, this property is giant, so be prepared to walk 4 blocks each way to get to the lobby and restaurants for your meals. Everyone on our trip was limping and had sore feet from all the walking.

Would I stay here again? No way.

Room Tip: Oh I forgot. The rooms were either too freezing, or too warm with no way to control the temp. Peop...

Dear Ms. Annicardona,

We have read your comments and would like to mention the following:

In reference to your bed, we have softeners available in case the customers request it and regarding the reservations for restaurants a la carte, this is done in advance as some times we have schedules that are saturated.

Moreover although the resort is big, we have concentrated services so the guests have closer areas.

Ms. Annicardona, thank you very much your comments and we hope to serve you in the future.

Best regards,

My husband and I stayed at this resort for a business trip with about 25 other couples. The resort was FANTASTIC. The staff was exceptional. Food and drinks were really good. The water was beautiful and the beaches were clean. We had fish swimming around us in the was, even in the shallow end. We saw turtles that also were swimming around us. Very unique experience. We enjoyed it so much that we are planning to return with our children as there are activities & so much for the kids to do. Can't wait to get back!

Stayed at this resort with our family, 8 total, over spring break. What a mistake. Do not go to this resort if you want any type of peace and quiet. It really is for families and large groups. There were many many spring breakers here. College and high school. Quite a large amount of unattended kids running around unsupervised, with a large amount of under age drinking going on. Also, if you're from Minnesota, this is the place for you! I'd say 80% of the people here were from Minnesota.

The only reason to stay at the Palace is that you have access to all the other resorts on the property, which is huge. We kept finding ourselves going to the other resorts as things seemed a little more laid back there. The only reason to up grade to club level is you get a better mattress, free VIP access at the disco (if you can stand the noise and crowd) and you don't need cards for towels. (Note: beach towels are hard to come by, get yours early!) Your room will not be any better then the others. There is a horrible plastic cover placed over the mattress that is noisy. We requested a different one 4 times( I repeatedly reassured them we were not going to vomit or pea in the bed!) to finally be told our mattress was a pillow top and didn't qualify for a better cover.

My recommendations: Go to the Maya Beach resort and walk to the end of the beach. There we found an adults only beach with great comfy loungers, and peace and quiet! This was a lovely spot they don't tell you about. Also, there are ATV's there that you can rent. They don't tell you that either. The ATV's were not too loud and didn't bother us.

Do not pass up the spa! Use the coupons they give you and go! The staff are wonderful and its pure bliss!

There are lots of activities for everyone, you won't be bored. Pool loungers are hard to come by, if you want to be by the pool, stake your claim on loungers early. That was irritating but we are mainly beach people. Beach is beautiful and large. Ocean fantastic. Bring water shoes or you will cut your feet on the rocks when getting into the ocean.

Food is mediocre at best, nothing to rave about. Food at the buffet becomes picked over if you don't arrive early.

They have a little shopping area which is really nice.

Staff for the most part is friendly. Staff in the Club are cold and not very friendly. Problem solving at this resort does not exist. Just try to be happy with what you have unless it's an emergency of some kind! If you don't expect much and realize you got what you paid for, you'll be just fine!

Tips are greatly appreciated. We heard the bartenders only make $5 a day! So sad because they do a great job.

And a warning, be prepared.....you will not be escorted to your room. You will be given a map and sent to find it yourself. They will take your luggage, but not you. Same when you leave. At check out, don't expect a "How was your stay with us? Will you be returning?" Its goodbye and that's it.

Fun trip with family, but we won't be returning.

Dear Customer,

I have read your comments and I am very sorry that you could not rest quietly during your stay, for this reason I offer you an apology; however I must mention that although sometimes we have families traveling with teenagers specially during this season, we have different areas where guests can relax or practice an activity according to their preferences without feeling invaded or disturbed by other guests.

I regret that you have taken a bad image of our hotel and reiterate an apology for any inconvenient caused.

Stayed here for a week with my family and 13 other families as part of my daughter's senior spring break trip. Overall great stay.

Good
Food, buffet has excellent variety, good quality. Restaurants have interesting, fun selections
Pools - large, clean, perfect water temp
Beach - abundance of chairs, can always find shade, snorkeling was awesome, good mix of rocks (to see fish) and sandy beach, never needed water shoes although I can understand why some might want them
Lobby bar porch - great place to enjoy the evening with a drink
Resort grounds - very clean, well manicured, beautiful lighting at night
Staff - mostly very good, friendly, tips didn't seem to change the level of service which tells me they must not get to keep their tips or they are shared among all staff
Rooms - decent size, two sinks in bathroom, good TV, lots of channels

Needs improvement
Check in process - arriving with a group means you will wait. They originally had us in two rooms not very close to each other and said there was nothing they could do to get us closer. After I pressed harder for connecting rooms they figured out a way to re-organize some other guests' rooms to allow to get the connecting rooms that we had originally requested.
Restaurant reservations - this concierge process is incredibly slow. They only have two or three concierge staff and each family would take about 15 minutes to book their reservations. They need a better system! I recommend allowing guests to book their own reservations using the computers in the concierge room or, even better, through a phone app or a touch screen TV in each room (which they don't currently have).
Slippery tiles - as many have noted, in certain locations the tiles can be slippery. None of us fell but could have very easily
Beds - as many have noted, beds were very firm but after requesting a mattress pad the beds were more comfortable.
Shower - water pressure wasn't always good, one day I couldn't get warm water
TV - didn't have channel carrying college basketball tourney at resort, had to go to Playa to watch games.

Overall, we felt that this was a very high quality resort and if in the future we decide to do "all-inclusive" again we would strongly consider Barcelo.
