“Excellent family vacation resort.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2012

My wife, I and our two daughters four and one year old just returned from a one week stay and had an excellent family vacation. We chose this resort because it was family friendly, had a water part and most of all because of the high marks given in reviews. We have traveled extensively throughout Mexico, Jamaica and DR and can compare it other RIU, Iberostar, Bahia Principe amd Barcelo resorts. Out of them all, this one is definately the best.

We arrived at the resort around 1 PM after about a 1 hour ride and had a disappionting start. We were met by a bell hop who directed us to the check in desk. I was a bit disappointed that we weren’t greeted with a welcome drink while waiting in line. Check in was bizarre, I e-mailed a week earlier to request a room near the pool, lobby and restaurants since we had small children and my wish was granted. We got a room in the first building (Michoacan) as requested. However, after we checked in, the front desk clerk told us to come back at 3PM for the room keys? In the meantime, we went to the buffet to have lunch. After we returned, we were told to get back in line to get the room key. This procedure is very flawed. You need to return to the check in desk again to get your key. If the room is ready, one should be allowed to go to the room or if it isn’t the key should still be given and go to the room at 3PM. I don’t understand why they won’t allow you into the room earlier if the room is ready. I never experienced this at any other resort. Very inefficient! Management should streamline this process so people don’t waste part of their vacation waiting around when their room is ready.

The room was very big and clean. The bathroom was very large with a tub, standup shower and two sinks. The cleaning maid did a great job keeping the room tidy and the fridge was restocked everyday. Our room was only a couple minutes walk to the main pool and waterpark, a huge plus for us. Yes the resort is large and you do have to do some walking, so if big isn’t you thing, look for a smaller resort.

The landscaping was beautiful and the pools were very clean and very well kept. Now for the water park and kids club – this is the main reason why we chose this resort. The water park is an excellent feature as it kept our four year old busy all day, she absolutely loved it! The Colonial next door also has a very similar water park that Palace guests can also use. The Barcy club for kids is also a great place for young children. It’s very structured and they have activities scheduled every hour like face painting, sea shell hunt, apron painting, water balloon toss etc. There is a schedule of activities when you check in your child. At first I was a bit skeptical leaving her there but the activity girls are very caring and put in a lot of effort to make the children happy. The children are also well supervised when they go to the beach or water park. The kids club even has activities after dinner time until 9PM like musical games and dancing. Our daughter met a lot of new friends and grew close to the instructors. Highly recommended for parents who need a short brake without the stress of worrying about the well being of their child.

The beach was just OK. The sand wasn’t very soft as it was a combination of sand and coral rock. The sand towards the other resorts was much better. The water was very clear and there were many fish near the coral reef. You can purchase fish food or get some bread from the buffet to feed the fish and they will come right up you. The water is very calm as the beach is on a small harbor. It’s ideal for small kids and snorkeling as there are no waves. My wife and I got massages on the beach, well worth it.

The restaurants were very good. I don’t understand other complaints as you could not go hungry at the buffet. There is a very large variety of food and it is cooked to your liking. We also ate at the French which was very good and the Rodezio which was wasn’t very good due to the meats being over and under cooked. The service at all restaurants was excellent. Nobody in out party got sick or had any stomach issues, just stick to the bottled water. Perhaps the greatest asset of this resort is the employees who work very had to provide a favorable customer experience. We brought a lot of singles for tipping as it was well deserved. We didn’t see any of the shows since our children went to bed early. The theatre is very nice as I watched the Super Bowl there. All the bars have top shelf liquor which was a nice benefit and very good service also. There was no communication problem with the employees, I was pleasantly surprised at how well they spoke English. Most of the guests were from Canada or the USA. I speak some Spanish and it goes a long way if you try to make an effort to speak to them in their native language.

I really don’t understand the negative reviews that were posted! The complainers obviously didn’t do their research or need to do a better job managing their expectations. Quit whining and spend double or triple the money and stay at the Mayakoba, Grand Velas or a Four Seasons. Some people will never be satisfied…you get what you pay for. Is it perfect? No, but here you get an excellent value for your money. Thankfully the good reviews overwhelmingly outnumber the bad ones. You won’t be disappointed if you go with an open mind and a bit of patience. There’s a reason why this resort was booked to capacity while we were there.

Overall, this is an excellent family resort, especially for those with small children or couples looking for a good upscale value. If you’re looking to party, this isn’t the place for you, go to Cancun. We walked to the other resorts and there is a big difference. Spend the extra money as the Palace is so much nicer and more upscale. It never felt crowded and there were always loungers available on the beach or by the pool. Palace guests can visit the other resorts buy not vice versa. I would highly recommend!

Room Tip: The Michoacan building is closer to the pool and restaurants.

The grounds at Barceló Maya Palace are lush and beautiful; everywhere you look you can see the attention to detail that has been taken. Barceló is a very large complex but I feel like it’s much easier to get around at Barceló Maya Palace than it is at other hotels. You can walk or take the train around the resorts, and in the middle of the complex is the shopping center. It’s a huge market of shops that carries any souvenir you could possibly want. There is also a disco shared by all the hotels in the Barceló complex.
Barceló Maya has nice big pools with swim up bar and fantastic waterpark for the kids. There’s also an adults only (18+ years old) pool for my clients looking for a little more peace and quiet. For kids aged 4-12, there is a wonderful thing called Barcy Club. Parents can sign up their kids for an hour or even all day and the activity staff do various activities with them. There is also a playground and mini-golf on the resort.
The beach at the Maya is a little rocky but it’s great for snorkeling. Remember to bring your water shoes. Just a short scroll down the beach is a perfect swimmable beach. The rooms are beyond wonderful; they are spacious, comfortable, have great security and very good maid service.
I love the variety of food at Barceló Maya Palace. Buffets were excellent in selection and quality of food is good. I always prefer to eat at the al carte restaurants and think the French and Mexican are my favorites. A note on dining — Guests staying 3 nights or less are allowed one a la carte dining experience, staying 4-6 nights are allowed 4 a la carte and staying 7+ nights are allowed 6 a la carte. Make their reservations as soon as you arrive. The a la carte restaurants can fill up quickly.
I have stayed here three times and always upgrade to Premium Club. It allows me WIFI, Premium brand liquor and unlimited access to all the restaurants in the complex. Love the disco and live entertainment in the bar. This hotel is great for families and large groups or destination weddings. Couples on a honeymoon might be better suited at a different hotel. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the resort.

Room Tip: upgrade to Premium Club

Was a beautiful resort but bring your walking shoes and two way radios would be helpful as if you lost your partner or group of friends you might not find them till the next day. Also long waiting line to get checked in, we arrived at 7pm and had at least a 45 minute wait for check in for our room and then only to find out it takes about a half hour walk to get there. Food was excellant and service was good. Water and beach were fantastic. Not trying to discourage anyone but there was a lot of people who did say room location was poor. If you did happen to get rooms up closer to front this might be an excellant resort but restaurants would still be a little ways. We would probably not go back to this one as it is just a little too big in area.

Room Tip: Ask for a room close to the ocean.

This is our third time here and we noticed a difference.

No management at all. All middle men who can't do anything.

Check in is hellish 4 hours !! So don't arrive before 4pm

And the wine d'table previously presentable is like detergent. Awful for their better end hotel !!!
Like a bad night at the Holiday Inn

Room Tip: Ask for the ground floor. Otherwise very noisy

We just spent a week at the Palace, which gives you access to the other resorts. We had heard from so many people that we were wasting our money by upgrading but I have to say, I don't think we did. The Palace has been described as "elite" compared to the others and I would have to say that is correct. The rooms are spacious and beautiful. The bathrooms are the same with double bowl sinks and a rain shower. The pictures really don't do the grounds justice. We were able to eat at a specialty restaurant every night and I think this alone, was worth it. The French restaurant was also our favorite from food quality to service. My second was Koyoto, the hibatchi grill and my partner's second favorite was the Santa Fe Steak House. Don't be fooled...there are three Koyoto's on the property but only one that does the entertainment cooking. This is NOT the one located at the Palace. Don't be afraid to make reservations at the other restaurants, the shuttle will take you to and pick you up at the front door. We only ate breakfast at the buffet in the Palace. I would have to agree that the food was not the hottest once you got it back to your table. Number one, the buffet is enormous and by the time you get done walking around with your plate, it's going to cool off. If you want hot, hot...stand in line and get an omlete made. It's worth the wait. The top shelf liquor is another plus. The ocean and the pool were both the perfect temperature. We would spend our mornings by the ocean and our afternoon's by the pool...perfect. We were on a couples first trip and so we were looking for romance and not the partying scene. If partying is what you are looking for, I would recommend the Colonial or the Tropical. If you are looking just to drink...the Beach or Caribe. I can't say enough about the friendly staff. They go out of their way to please you and get you what you want. Be patient with them and they will be patient with you. The beach was beautiful, white sand beaches. The room was awesome! Is there some walking...yes, but the grounds made it like a walk in the park. Don't be afraid of the weather forcast. We were predicted to have rain every day and we had rain one afternoon and it didn't last long. The difference between the Palace and the others was the service, choices and the beautiful amenities. This resort IS located on one of the most beautiful stretches of beach and the staff make sure it is cleaned and raked every night. I also noticed that the Palace had wait staff around the pool and in the area of the ocean and did not see that with the other resorts. Tip: Bring an insulated mug...you don't have to run up to the bar so often and it keeps your drink nice and cold! Don't hesitate and enjoy your trip!!

Room Tip: We were on the second floor in the back of the Oxaca building and our room was very nice. It was at...

We arrived as a group of 6 on Sunday Feb 5th, for a 7 day stay. We took USA Transfers from the airport to the hotel, definately worth every penny. Our flight was delayed by a whole day, which sucked, but USA Transfers handled the situations great. They responded to my emails almost immediately, and were waiting outside with a sign once we finally arrived. The resort is awesome, great food, great beach, great drinks. I had emailed the resort the week prior with room requests and they were fullfilled exactly as requested :) If anyone wants to check out the nightlife in Playa, Coco Bongo is worth every single penny!!!! Had an amazing time....best bar experience ever. Did a day trip to Cozumel, seemed more like a tourist trap for the cruise ships to me. All in all, great vacation.

Room Tip: If you take a few buns from the buffet, you can feed the fish. They swarm around you and will eat f...

Spent 4 days in the resort during a business conference. Long trip from the airport, but once you get there the grounds and view are breathtaking, as most of the Mexican resorts are.
Rooms were nice and comfortable, had problems with lights turning off when using the bathroom. Buffet food was OK, but whenever we had activities at the beach, the food was cold and tasteless, loved the French restaurant for both service and food. Premium drinks at all bars, that was a big plus and the resort shops were very well priced, so no need to go to the town for souvenir shopping. Beautiful areas for kids and the beach was nicer than Cancun itself. Wi fi was not accessible anywhere unless you pay $15 daily. Plenty of chairs at the pools at all times. Would like to come back with the family.

Room Tip: Michoacan building was close to nice pool areas, swim bar and beach access.
