My family spent a week at the Barceló Maya Tropical in June-July, 2014. Overall, the resort is very clean, very pretty, nice pool and beaches, and the staff was very nice. For some reason, all of the resorts we have been to in Mexico have an annoying, time consuming check-in process and this resort was no different. It to at least 40 mins to check us in and they weren't even busy.
The food/food plan was pretty good, not great. We found that we were comparing our experience to the Iberostar we stayed in two years ago which was much much better. The food plan here included 4 al a carte dining (as opposed to 7) which meant we had to go to the buffet for the other nights. For us, a buffet breakfast and lunch are ok but the dinners were not very good. Everything that is cooked is left under hot lights/warmers and becomes overcooked by the time you get it. The buffets are themed, but they didn't match the food with the theme and served a lot of the same things at all of them. The drink package did not include top shelf liquors (you would have to pay a lot extra per day to get this). Iberostar included top shelf liquors for no extra charge.) The rooms were ok -- clean but a little on the smaller side.....I believe they are re-doing each section over. Be aware of this when you book because there is a lot of construction going on in other areas.
This is definitely a family friendly resort. Don't expect a romantic getaway if that's what you want. They have great pools for the kids. The beach was nice, but be careful in the water, there are rocks here and there and you will bang into them while walking.
The entertainment was not good and the area it was in was extremely hot so we did not choose to sit there long. Only a few fans and no a/c. Hard to sit through.
Overall, we had a really nice time -- It is a nice resort with friendly staff and decent food. However, if I were to visit Mexico in the future, I would not choose this resort again.
