My husband, daughter (14), son (9) and I went to this resort beginning of July 2012. We had a great time! We upgraded our room/stay to a premium room when we got there for a great price and our room was fantastic, with a beautiful view. Everything was great-the staff was very friendly/accomodating; the room was always clean; the beach was beautiful; the resort had lots to do on site, from beach volleyball tournaments, to dance lessons, water volleyball and basketball, kayaks, water bikes, kids club, etc.; the pools were beautiful. We even got free scuba diving lessons in the pool-Fantasitc! If you just want to relax, it's a great place for that as well. There seems to be people from all over the world that go there. The buffet food was good (I wouldn't say great - and some days were better than others, but we weren't there for the food) and had something for everyone in the family (even the picky one). The specialty restaurants were good also. Everyone there speaks English quite well (except the maid service, which we didn't interract with them much anyway). The hotel asks you to have a meeting with someone the morning after you arrive to find out your departure time (make sure you bring your flight number and time)-this is mostly to get you to book excursions, but, if you don't want to do any excursions, just let the person know and give them your flight information & your departure time, etc). We booked 2 excursions (were planning to anyway)-one deep sea fishing one (lots of fun and the captain and crew were fantastic & the ocean is beautiful - even saw sea turtles swimming by-Very cool); and one Jungle Maya tour (zip lineing through the jungle a couple of times & into a cave of water, repelling into a ceynote, scuba diving in an underwater cave (some of the most amazing things I have ever done)-we then got served a lunch made by the people that live there, which was delicious! The excursion was completely fantastic and our tour guide, Marco, was absolutely AMAZING and friendly and fun! After that (same excursion), we went on a guided tour of the Mayan ruins and learned some really interesting facts about the Mayan people (the kids didn't like this part quite as much, but, my husband and I were quite intrigued. The hair dryer and one of the outlets in the room didn't work, but, I'm sure if we would have reported it to the front desk, it would have been taken care of-we managed without. Some of the best tips we got from online reviews for our trip were: when you arrive at the airport, walk right past all the people trying to get your attention (they are trying to sell timeshares)-don't talk to them or even look at them, just go to the person / area you are supposed to meet or where the taxi's are (they even stoop so low as to try to tell you that they are authorized to tell you where you're supposed to go-keep walking); bring your own big insulated mugs (the drinks (pop, etc.) you get at the resort are in small plastic cups-you don't want to spend most of your day running back and forth to the bars, etc.), bring your own scuba gear (we just brought two sets (one kids set and one adult) -our son would have spent the whole trip scuba diving off the beach if we would have let him (there was a school of fish that were regularly right off the beach, which were lots of fun to watch), and when I would go out with him, I would dive down and find shells as well, and he and his dad went out a little further and saw stingrays and I believe one sea turtle - we all enjoyed going out scuba diving with him); bring water shoes for the kids-the beach in the water is quite rocky (with lots of coral) and can cut your feet; and bring lots of extra sunscreen - we brought a couple of bottles and it was not enough - the sun there is VERY intense and you have to reapply sunscreen at least every hour due to the waves, etc. and you WILL get burned if you aren't diligent with sunscreen (I can't say this enough). You can get sunscreen at the hotel shops, but it is VERY expensive. This resort is all inclusive so tipping is not necessary, however, we would tip the waiters/waitresses and staff a dollar or two when we got good service (which was almost always) (we brought a bunch of $1 and $5s for this) and they were very grateful (but they did not expect it). The people there work very hard for meager wages and we felt it was worthwhile to help them out as well as let them know they were doing a good job. We also left a tip at the end of the week for the maid service. There is a group of shops between the Tropical and the Colonial (I believe) and the outdoor shops are willing to barter (the indoor shops tell you they "can't"). We tried to get on an excursion to go scuba diving with sea turtles but they were booked (so book as soon as you know you want to go on that one) and we tried to get my daughter and I pedicures but they said they were booked also (even though when we walked by there was nobody in the place). You can walk through any/all of the hotels on the complex and (I believe) you can use any of the pools (except at the palace). The grounds are beautiful with great landscaping and interesting flora and fauna. We saw a ton of tiny lizards running around (even found a really tiny one in our room - our daughter caught it and let it outside). If you go to the mini-golf, it is within the jungle and neat to go through, but, be sure to wear bug spray - we were almost eaten alive (haha). All other reviews are correct in saying the beds are very hard (I slept on the couch in the room after 2 nights-would have rated sleep quality lower but my husband and kids thought the beds were fine). Overall, we would love to go here again someday (and probably will!)!
