“Fantastic Family Vacation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2012

We visited this resort 2 years in a row, in June 2009 and June 2010. We visited another resort in July 2011 and immediately regretted that we had not booked here for the 3rd year in a row. We were thinking that since there are so many resorts in this area, that we would try a new one...., well now we know! We have traveled all over the caribbean and mexico and been to many beautiful beaches and resorts and this one remains our favorite family resort. It is not ultra luxurious, the rooms are pretty simple, but comfortable and clean. The beach, grounds and pool are amazingly beautiful. The water park is awesome for kids, the pier is a fun attraction, and the walks along the long stretch of beach are very nice, the water is extremely blue and the beach itself is very scenic with the coconut trees and rocks along some parts of the beach. We love it here, our favorite vacation spot! We will return every year that we can!

Me and my (now) wife choose this place to get married in August '11, and we were happy for the choice! All our guests had a wonderful time, and the wedding on the wonderful beach of the hotel is really something special. The staff was always nice and courteous, and the wedding was organized to perfection.
The only issues we had were sometimes the quality of the food in the buffets (quantity but not quality..). We are italian so food is important to us!
But all considered, for the money we spent, it was a very good value!

We travelled to the Barcelo Tropical during the week of March 11 - March 18. The resort is very beautiful with many trees and flowers along the paths that lead you to the different areas of the resort. We upgraded to the Club room (which we would definitely do again) at the front of the building which gave us a wonderful view of the ocean and pools and other extras not included in the regular rooms. The room was kept very clean and the maid always came near dinner time to make sure we had enough towels. I've read that people have said the beds were too hard, I guess I enjoy that, as I found them fine.
The pool area is huge, but we unfortunately had to play the "chair game", taking turns with our friends getting up at 5:30 am to try to find chairs before they were all gone. If we do return again I will bring my own portable lounger so I don't have to worry about getting up so early. The ocean has amazing snorkeling opportunities; our kids spent hours looking at the fish and coral. They even saw a sea turtle one day! Make sure you bring your own gear so that you can go any time you want.
The buffets were excellent giving us (and our children) a great choice of food. We went to the four specialty restaurants - Italian, Japanese, Steak and Seafood. All of these were excellent but we enjoyed the Japanese and the Steak House the most, as the food was the best and the cook at the Japanese restaurant was amazingly entertaining. Although we found the service in the specialty restaurants very attentive, we found that in the buffets the service was not as good. The wait staff is not only responsible for serving drinks, but also for clearing and resetting the tables. Other resorts we have been to before had separate staff cleaning and resetting the tables so that the waiters can spend time getting drink items for the guests. Not that this was a huge problem, but I did feel that it deterred people from leaving tips, which we always did regardless, which the staff appreciated.
My family and I had a wonderful vacation here and I would definitely return again.

This is our 3rd time to Barcelo (travelled March 3-18, 2012) but this time as a Premium Club Member. We booked 2 weeks and were shocked upon arrival that we received 10 booked ala' carts with great dinner times (7:00pm, 7:30pm). We had no problem rebooking a couple of these and did upgrade to one dinner at the French restaurant in the Palace which was very much worth it. I do have a feeling now that we are part of this "special club” the regular guests are not given any priority over booking times.

Because we did not book with a travel agent, we had to find our own transportation to the hotel. We arrived at the airport at about 1:00am in the morning to find we were not being able to find a taxi ride. We asked one of the people outside and before we knew it a few people grabbed our luggage and took us to an unmarked white van. We were quoted $170 to get to our hotel and pretty much we were raked over the coals as we had no other option at that time in the morning. A regular cab ride to the airport is between $60-$70.
We did find out on our way back that there is one taxi service that is allowed to pick up people at the airport. Not even the taxi company that you see at Playa Del Carmen are allowed to pick people up.

We did have free access to the internet rooms as part of this club otherwise you can pay $3 for 15 min and I heard for wifi it is $12 a day. I saw people using their laptops outside their rooms as I suspect they could not connect in their rooms.
The Club Premium room internet in the Tropical lobby was super super slow and only one computer working. The best place to go was in the Convention Centre. You do need the Gold wrist bands and be part of the Premium Club to use these rooms. There is also a printer in the convention lobby.

This is a large but beautiful resort. The staff work hard to make your vacation stay great. Do be courteous and tip when you can.

Now some helpful tips:

-Beds are hard. There is a mattress pad between the box and mattress.
-Bring lots of American one dollar bills for tipping like your daily maid service. We leave 2-3 a day and keep everything tucked and locked back in our luggage and we have never had a problem with anything going missing.
-Collectivo is $3 American or 36 Pesos. Much cheaper than taking a cab if you go shopping at Playa for the day.
-Bring ear plugs for your plane ride. I find I cannot stand the crying, screaming and yelling of children on the flights.
-In Playa shopping can be costly. They will quote you 150% above what you can get items for. Barter with them or walk away. NEVER pay more than what you feel is fair. Just off of 5th ave you will find better deals.
-Front desk will only cash $200 traveler’s cheques a day per person. You also need your passport to do this. No one will give you American change. This is why bring lots of American with you. It is much easier this way.
-The beach by the Palace is excellent for snorkeling. You want to be by the rocks to see the fish and in the center sandy area towards the buoys you will find stingrays, turtles and we even spotted a huge barracuda!
-This is the first time we had to put out towels early to get chairs! Closer to the Beach/Caribe beach were more open chairs.
-Xcaret is a magical place! Beautiful! Book an excursion there for the day! It is also worth it booking the dinner ($40 per person) for the two hour theatre show.

We found on this 3rd trip to the Barcelo that service was much better (not sure if this was only because we are Club memebers). We also noticed three were also much more small children. If you want peaceful dinners, book your dinners a little later. This way the kids are already done eating and parents have either taken them to the theatre or to bed. I personally will not book in March again as there were many vacationing Spring Break Collage Students there. We had the small children early in the morning waking us up and the collage kids keeping us awake till all hours. I found people to be less courteous and everyone in a rush! This is your vacation! Slow down, take your turn, be kind to people and we will all have a much more pleasant vacation. Though we will be back, our next trip will be at an all adult resort!
If you have any questions or comments, please do message me. I also have a fabulous packing list that I can share with you if you like!!!

we were there from jan 31 to feb 8 2012. We were booked into the beach but upon arrival to our surprise we found we were upgraded to the tropical. The staff was pleasant, the food was good, the beach was amazing. one morning we were up to watch the sunrise and the staff were raking the sand getting it all ready for the guests. The resort is very clean. rooms were fine. i cannot find one thing to complain about. everyone was very pleasant. Lots of choices at the buffets. you must take the time to go into the ocean and bring bananas or bread and feed the fish. The fish will take the bread right from your fingers when you hold it under water and break off little pieces of banana and throw it in for them lol you will have hundreds of fish at your waist. pretty cool.

We just returned from a 10-day trip to Riviera Maya where we stayed at the Barcelo Tropical Beach Resort. Our 2 rooms were located facing the ocean, directly behind the shuffle board/basketball courts. For us, the location was PERFECT because we were very close to the pool, beach, swim up bar, snack bar and games. We were on the far north end of the Tropical Beach section, so we had to walk farther to get to and from the Buffet, Restaurants, Lobby and the entertainment theatre. (plus it helped to burn off some of the calories from the fantastic food in the buffet and restaurants!). All of the restaurants were very good and the buffet food was always fresh and had a nice selection. Our favorite restaurant on the property was the Japanese. I had filet and lobster cooked on the grill and the chef (show) was outstanding!! Our favorite ‘hide away’ was the Piano Bar located in the lobby of the Colonial Beach portion of the resort. It is air conditioned and the waitresses are great! The entire resort is immaculately clean and meticulously maintained, from the flowers and plants outside, to the miles of tiled paths and walkways. The workout facility was very clean and there was hardly anyone in there when I went in the morning around 7:30-8:00am. There are 3 saunas, 2 steam rooms, a huge spa tub and lots of weights and cardio equipment. I don’t have any completely negative things to say, but will make suggestions of things I would have done differently.
1. Take comfortable walking shoes/tennis shoes. You WILL need them if you want to leave the resort.
2. Pay the little bit extra for the ‘club premium’ room. You get lots of things included in your “all-inclusive” package that the others do not get. Among these are FREE room service 24-hours a day (which the boys got every night we were there), higher end alcoholic beverages (like Beefeater, Jack Daniels, Baileys Irish cream for example), a stocked mini-bar with snacks in your room every day, and priority check in/out.
3. As other reviewers have posted, the beds are VERY firm! For us it was not a problem but for others it may be.
4. Bring sunscreen from HOME! An 8-12 oz bottle costs anywhere from $20-28 USD every place that we looked! You can bring 3 bottles from home for the same price, and you will go through that much in a week anyways.
5. Take at least 50-one dollar bills. We left a dollar bill on our pillow every morning and night for our maid, and also used them for tipping the wait staff in the restaurants and at the pool. The workers are very appreciative of tips and they work very hard.
6. Bring your own large insulated mug or tervis style plastic tumbler (with lid) from home! It will save you many trips back and forth between the pool bar and your lounge chair!
7. If you’re having trouble choosing between the Palace and the Tropical Beach, I’d stay at the Tropical Beach! We travelled with a very large group (families) and those who stayed in the Palace said that it was amazing…but they spent several days at our pool and beach. The Palace is more expensive and is the furthest away from the scuba diving, snorkeling, sailing and the Jaguar Nightclub (for those who are travelling with adults between the ages of 18-25).

Room Tip: Lower level rooms smelled a bit musty (from dampness?). I suggest a 2nd floor room. For those who do...
