“Beautiful hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2014

We recently visited this hotel. It was beautiful and the staff were all friendly and helpful. The huge pools were amazing. I loved the temperature of the water. And the swim up bars were a plus! The room was nice although we wish we had a king size bed instead of two fulls. I loved the restaurants. The Japanese one over the Italian one. Every night there they had activities to watch and different meal themes. I would most def come back. The only downside was the lack of hot water after 5pm. I know everyone showered at the same time in preparation for dinner but the water was almost cold even at 9pm.

We stayed February 2014. I got engaged here!!! We went with 2 other couples. I honestly can't believe ppl have any complaints about this place. We all absolutely LOVED it, granted this was a first for all of us to an all inclusive resort. The staff were all so friendly. Every time we passed they would say, Hola. Food was good. The buffet has many, many different types of food. If you can't find something to like, shame on you for being so picky. The service at the buffet/restaurants was great also. We absolutely loved the beach and actually spent most of our time there. The room was great also. TV was old, but hey we didn't care! We were there on vacation to enjoy the beach, not stay in our room and watch TV. Yes the rooms smell kind of wet/mildewy, but we are in the tropics people where it's humid!! I've heard of people bringing air fresheners, but it did not bother us one bit. Not sure how the night entertainment was. We'd stay on the beach until dusk and then go back to our room and get ready for our supper reservations, which were usually at 9PM. We'd be in bed at a decent time to get up and enjoy the beach the next morning! Great snorkeling also on the beach. I saw multiple different fish, sting ray, and a sea turtle we could reach out and touch! I would go back in a heart beat and do not have one bad thing to say about this place. Beautiful, well kept grounds also. It is a bit of a drive from Cancun airport, but I took it as an opportunity to see some of Mexico's countryside! 100% recommend!!!

I cannot say i expected to be treated like a king i mean for the price i paid. I read about a person comparing to other hotels but come on those are more expensive. The beach is great and if I do not like the food I go out to downtown and period. Great grounds.

We spent a week at the Colonial Maya and we picked it because it was farther away from the Cancun strip. It was a little bit of a drive from the airport, but it was a great trip. We were able to check in as soon as we arrived and hit up the buffet. The food was good and we quickly had favorites that we just had to have. Our room was a little walk from the restaurants and the pool, but that's where you want to be. If you have a room by the theater it will be noisy! The shows were unique, but they were loud. We loved the pools and since we were there in the off season it was like we had them all to ourselves. The beaches were great except for the rocky entrance into the water. Once you got out a ways it was sandy, but the beginning steps were tough if you didn't have aqua shoes. We tried 3 of the sit down restaurants and enjoyed the Japanese hibachi the best. We swam with the dolphins at the resort for an extra fee and we had a great time! Overall our trip was awesome and we have already talked about returning!!

We just got back from this awesome vacation with eight family members. I booked this trip through AAA, and was thinking about canceling due to the reviews on tripadvisor and the news media in general about Mexico, I'm glad we didn't, this was the best vacation ever!!
We arrived with three other flights and was surprised how quickly we went through customs (45min total time). After getting through the Time Share worm hold, we waited for our transportation which was 15min which wasn't bad due to the arrival rate.
Hotel: after the 50min ride to Tropical (further south than the others) we made it. We were greeted quickly with cocktails for everyone and checked in, maybe 10min if that, our luggage came up right after. The staff was very friendly and helpful and worked hard to ensure that everyone was comfortable. The food was just amazing (even at the buffet). The rooms were great and cleaned nightly. The beaches and pools was also outstanding. I also recommend the spa, Amazing couple massage!!
In summary, after visiting other resorts in the US and abroad, this was the best, you can always find issues wherever you go, however; the staff at Barceló will fix any issue that you may have, We will be back

Room Tip: We found that the second and third floors had a better view of the resort

This was our third stay at the Barcelo. We’ve stayed at the Tropical, Palace and now the sister hotel to the Tropical, the Colonial. We decided to stay for two weeks at the Colonial.

Flight was Enerjet (charter for Air Transat) I would suggest you bring some snacks, granola bars, energy bars, bottled water, books, Ipod, hand held movie player. This is a no frills flight, although you can buy food if you choose.

Arrival. This was a big headache as the airport at Cancun was extremely busy. It took us one and a half hours to get through customs and about 45 minutes to get through the baggage scanner. About a 25 minute wait for the bus departure and a little over an hour to arrive at the hotel.

This long process (three + hours post flight) will certainly have us considering some other destinations, in the future, as it seems like the air traffic at Cancun, is getting busier and busier year by year.

The arrival/check-in at the Colonial, was pleasant, smooth and quick.

Room; The room was good, quiet and they were fast to remedy an a/c unit electrical problem. There were two bottles of Tequila, and some fresh fruit upon arrival which was part of the upgraded Air Transat package we had. Turn down service most nights, and bar was fully restocked each evening.

Wireless internet was reasonable at $49 USD per week, but was extremely slow in the evenings. Plenty of users online, I am guessing.

You will likely get a few coupons on check in. We only used the one for the couple’s massage which I’d recommend. It was worth the additional $152 USD

Service, although spotty in some places, and we always seem to notice the bad service more than the good, overall the service throughout the resort was good to very good.

Food; After two weeks, the buffet food can be a little too much –the same- but overall quality was good, and variety was good. The restaurants are decent, but we did not choose the Barcelo because it’s a gourmet’s paradise. The best of the restaurants, we revisited during the second week, were the Japanese, Italian and Mexican. The Mexican restaurant was located in the Beach lobby, and was a pleasant surprise.

The resort is well maintained and there were ongoing upgrades during our stay. These were to the beach showers, theater and the whole Caribe section of the resort. The upgrades were non-intrusive and, I think, shows the commitment of the resort ownership to maintaining a high quality hotel.

Beach; The beach at the Barcelo, is among the best of all the resorts that we have stayed at in the Mayan. It is huge. There is plenty of coral and fish to make snorkeling great right at the resort, and the Beach section has plenty of white sand, if that’s what you prefer. We spent most days on the beach, which have palm trees for shade and plenty of beach chairs.

There are a lot of Weddings and romantic dinners that get set up on the beach almost every day, and we found ourselves being relocated most days by theses activities. After two weeks it did become a little annoying, but a small annoyance.

Swimming; Swimming is great at the Barcelo. Plenty of boat- free swimming areas. Bring your snorkel gear here, if you have your own. Turtles, plenty of fish in the coral, stingrays and manta rays.

I did see Barracuda in the water on two occasions. I have never spotted them before at the Mayan resorts. I am not sure if it is due to people feeding the fish, or cast off bait fish from local fisherman (which I saw washing up on the beach.) Barracuda have bitten people at other resorts and will strike at shiny objects, like jewelry. I’d suggest not swimming with jewelry of any kind, or removing it before venturing out in the areas well away from the shoreline.

Gym; I was up early using the gym each day. It was reasonably equipped, but some of the machines definitely show their age.

Excursions; We did the Whale Shark excursion. It was a lot of fun. In order to enjoy it you should be an above average swimmer and able to jump out of the boat, and climb back in on a ladder, several times.

Check out; Was quick and easy, return transport was direct to the airport.

Departure; Was much quicker than arrival, thankfully.

Overall we would love to come back and visit the Barcelo again. It is one of our favorite resorts in the Mayan. The Caribe section of the resort is scheduled to be completed in December 2014, and looks like it will be very nice. The Beach section of the resort also looks much better since it was renovated.

We vacationed in the Barceló Colonial in Mexico's Maya Riviera August 5 thru August 12. Our experience was amazing, to say the least! We tried a different restaurant every night and the food was way beyond our expectations. For example, the salmon in the seafood restaurant was so incredible that after the first bite I stopped chewing in amazement! The buffet was great, so much to choose from and so fresh .This is the first resort in which I did not feel sick at all.

The staff are so very hard working, friendly and helpful. The hotel is staffed very well and we were never ever lacking for anything.

Our room was clean and very nice, we had a junior suite. We did sometimes need more towels, but no problem to get from the housekeeping. We had some laundry done, it was done very well and professionally.

The pools were amazing, and seeing the cleaning process was impressive! In fact, the staff is constantly maintaining the hotel, it is so beautiful everywhere! The grounds perfect! The beach seaweed seems to be a lot this year, but they worked very hard to clean it off with staff and machines. The seaweed seems to be a geological anomaly this year, and Barceló is taking care of what nature seems to be bringing.

The entertainment was awesome as well! Incredible talent, costumes, everything! We were enthralled morning, noon and night!

I have been to many highly rated resorts all over the world, including Atlantis in the Bahamas, Broadmoor in Colorado, Rome, Hawaii, but this one has gained more points in my opinion as the food was better than anywhere, very hard working and friendly staff, and just the beauty and care of the resort.

Next time I will bring my own snorkel stuff, for simple snorkeling. There are turtles and all kinds of fish just on the beach area close to rocks! And, pack some inexpensive innertubes or rafts, it is permitted and fun to float on the ocean. They do sell them, but Wal Mart prices are probably better.

We did go on the Tulum tour, our trip advisor was Cesar and he was great! Good trip with beach and snorkeling. We loved it!

Whoever runs Barceló, is doing an amazing job.

My only complaint, that I had to leave!

Hope to be back.

You will enjoy this resort.
