Barcelo Maya Resort is very big ( 5 hotels in one) but because of its smart layout, you can access everywhere easily either by foot or with the help of a tractor shuttle. Check in / out is quick and people working at front desk are efficient. We encountered some minor issues such as water leak and had to change room, also we had to nag for 3 days before finally getting a room with 2 separated beds.
Overall, we are happy with our stay at Barcelo Colonial. The ground is well kept, our room is clean and bed is very comfortable. The service we received was very good everywhere, in restaurants (buffets and a-la-cartes) as well as at the bars (pool bar, lobby bar etc.). Hotel staff is friendly and working hard to please everyone, tip or no tip.
Food was good and plenty at the buffet. Our family enjoyed very much the diner at Kyoto restaurant. The other a-la-carte restaurant that we liked is the steakhouse Santa Fe. If you happen to enjoy a good glass of wine with your meal once in a while, make sure to bring along one or 2 bottles of your own. Their house wine, either red or white, is undrinkable. Remember you have to pay if ordering from their wine menu. The markup is around 400% to 500% and if i remember correctly, the cheapest on the list is approximately 700 pesos.
Barcelo Maya beach is very long and beautiful from one end to the other. Too bad that there are rocks here and there on the ocean floor. On second day, we were no longer bothered since we knew the way to avoid them . The section in front of Maya Beach / Caribe has much less rocks compared to ours.
