“Good Resort for Families”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2014

I will try to keep this short, as the reviews for this hotel are very thorough and I second many of the sentiments I have already read.

We stayed in February with our 20 month old daughter. We spent a little extra money to stay in the Ocean View Premium Suite. This room made the trip TOTALLY worth it and I would recommend booking it, especially if you have a little one. When I walked by standard rooms while housekeeping was cleaning, I was less than impressed with the size and totally thankful we didn't have to share that room with our baby. The Ocean View Premium Suite was a corner room with a HUGE wrap around balcony and another much smaller balcony off the dining area. The suite had a half bath upon first walking in, a dining area, a living room with access to the balcony, a bedroom with king bed (also with access to the balcony) and a full bath. We put the baby's crib in the bedroom and put her in there at night with the door shut and were still able to access a bathroom, the couch/television, and balcony. Being a premium room, we had free wifi for our entire stay (in room) and free room service. In my opinion this was worth EVERY penny and made our stay.

After reading a lot of reviews about not being able to take food out of the restaurants, we did pack PLENTY of snacks and it proved to be great for us. We were able to go back to the room during the little one's nap time and still grab a snack while reading/relaxing on the balcony.

We were right by the kiddy pool/waterslide area. That proved to be a great spot for us. It was a bit noisy during the day (with the balcony door open) but quieted down at night. As others have said - the noise from the theater can be a bit much...but isn't a huge pain.

We found the food to be "meh", but we've never found an all inclusive that we've raved about when it came to cuisine. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't something we'd write home about either.

The only other draw back that I can think of is that the ride to/from the hotel is an hour. We lucked out and got a direct transport from the airport, and on the way back to the airport we rode with people who were also at our hotel - so no additional stops. I can imagine this might be tough if you have a little one and have to make lots of stops.

OH - I wanted to mention - we personally did not have any issues with a musty smell - but a few years ago, I read a suggestion that has worked wonders for us...just bring a few dryer sheets and put them in the air conditioning vent. Viola!

The bed was large but I was very sensitive to sound (because of the baby sleeping in the same room and not wanting to wake her)...the bed made the weirdest crinkling sound...almost like we were sleeping on a diaper. Again, I'm not sure if it's because I was hyper-sensitive to the sound...but that was just odd.

As others mentioned, there isn't a ton of shade at the beach....so be prepared for that.

The property is beautiful and even when "very busy" it didn't seem crowded at all.

Bottom line...Would we come back? If we could get the same room type - YES.

My wife and I went here for a long-anticipated family vacation. There were us, our 2 adult children and their spouses and our 2 grandchildren. Any staff that we encountered were always smiling and would go out of their way to help. In our many previous visits to an all-inclusive the food would not normally have much taste, but the food here was simply incredible. Everything a the buffet was very tasty and well presented and there was always a couple of stations cooking meat or pasta to order. Oddly enough, our visit to the Mexican themed a-la-carte restaurant was a let down; we enjoyed the food at the buffet far more. The amenities here are second-to-none and pools (and especially the children's pool) were likely the best that we've ever encountered. The beach has some rocks and course sand, but it is still good.
The entire resort is spotless and there are always staff around doing some sort of regular maintenance; gardening, cleaning, repairing, etc. yet they never seem to get in the way or negatively impact the guests.
Overall, a wonderful place with great staff and food. The only odd thing we found was that even though the marketing things that we read said that there is free Wi-Fi in the lobby, you need to purchase it if you want to use the internet. Range is good with the Wi-Fi and the signal was even Very Strong in our room.

Room Tip: I'm not sure that there are less or more desirable rooms, but if you're looking to get sleep...

We stayed at the Colonial from February 24 to March 3, 2014. Overall, we had a great vacation.

Beach: Great for swimming or snorkeling. Lots of varieties of fish, turtles, stingrays, beautiful coral ... The best spot to snorkel is between the Tropical and the Palace. There are always chairs available at the beach in the sun or in the shade.

The food is great. Lots of varieties at the buffet. The A la carte restaurants are very good. The Japanese and the Steak are the best. The seafood is OK and the Italian is so so.

Grounds: They are gorgeous and pretty well kept.

Rooms: They are clean and our bed was very comfortable. The mini bar is filled every day with soft drinks, beer, water, sparkling water, juice, peanuts, chips and mexican nuts. So you don't need to bring snacks.

The service was very good most of the time. We had 2 or 3 lunches with average service, but service overall is great.

For those who love the pool, it's big and long and since both the Colonial or the Tropical pools are beside each other, you can choose the quiet pool or the one with entertainment.

Overall, we had a great time and would definitely come back.

Room Tip: I prefer higher floors, they're quieter.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2014

We (my wife, myself, our 15 month old son, my sister in-law and my parents in-law) stayed at this resort for a week starting February 20th, 2014. We travel a lot and have been in numerous resorts and this was not our first one in Mayan Riviera.

The room was okay, we expected more from this 4 1/2 star resort. The room was the worst one we have had in the Mayan, but this is not to say it was bad, just not great. When we got to our room, we noticed that the crib that we requested for our son was not there, and we had to put a lot of pressure on the front desk to get one that same day, but they did deliver it. Also, our hair dryer was missing and our mini-bar fridge was not working (we needed it for our son's medication). They replaced both the following day. Our A/C worked great, but my in-laws room barely worked. Even though their thermostat said 20.5deg, their room felt more like 24-25deg all week. They never complained about it, so hard to say if the hotel could have fixed it or not.

The resort itself is beautiful and HUGE! It includes 5 different parts where we were allowed to use 4 of the 5 parts: the Barcelo Palace was not included since it was a higher end resort. We could walk through it, but could not get free food or free drinks, which was fine. That side is definitely a nicer resort and if we went back, we would stay at that one. The numerous pools are nice and big, so you don't feel crowded even with lots of people. The beach itself is really nice except for a few spots with small rocks that are easily visible. There was always numerous chairs available at both the pool and the beach (which was a first for us) at any time of the day. The palm trees do not provide much shade on the beach, and we were made aware of this by other reviews on trip advisor, so we brought a sun tent which provided shade for our sun to play. The only issue we had was that they didn't allow us to go in the kids pool structure with our 15 month old son, who was too young to go by himself, but yet, I saw adults with their kids in the park at different times, so we did not spend any time there with our son.

There were no face cloths in the room, which we didn’t expect since the only other place we have been where they don’t provide them was Cuba. They also never replenished the toiletries. So, what you got the first day is what you got for the week! Also, they advertised that the mini-bar and snacks in the room would be replenished daily, which wasn’t the case. The replenished our drinks every 3 days and our snacks every other day. This was not an issue for us, but not what they advertise. Also, the room service was “free” but had a delivery charge of 97pesos (around $8-$9) for EVERY plate ordered, so definitely NOT free.

The food at the buffet is very good and as a great variety. The a la carte restaurants are okay, but not great and it was really hard for us to go with our son since it takes 1 1/2 hours. We either went to the buffet with him or me and my wife did a split dinner shift since the buffet only opened at 6:30pm, which we found to be ridiculously late for a your boy, yet the a la carte opened at 5:30pm??? Also, when we went to our first a la carte, our son was getting tired and for him and the other guests of the restaurant, we decided to leave before the desert. We requested to have our desert to go or have it delivered to our room, but they told us that they didn’t allow that (that was at the Sea Food restaurant), yet the next night, when I went to the Italian restaurant, numerous people got their deserts to go! We also tried the Steak restaurant, which we found to be the best of all 4. We went twice to the steak restaurant since we liked it so much. We didn’t try the Asian one, since it appeared to be mostly sushi and some people in our family did not like that.

The 2 beach grills have a lot of choices, but you cannot bring food on a plate to the beach or pool like other resorts allow you. Also, there are no waiters at all on the resort except for the restaurants and lobby bar. This means, no waiters at the pools and beach, so you have to get up every time you want a drink. There is also no bar on the beach, so you have to go to the pool bar for drinks. The drinks themselves are of very good quality.

The entire staff was great for our whole stay. From the front desk, maid, repairman to all the waiters and barmaid, everybody was great and went the extra mile to make us happy, as we have always seen in Mayan Riviera (which is why we love Mexico).

Overall, this is a good resort, but it appears to be quantity over quality. Some things were lacking compared to other 4 1/2 and 5 stars resorts in the same price range in the Mayan. We would maybe go back to this resort if we got a really good deal, but for what we paid (around $1600/person per week), we could have gone to a resort that we went before that we felt was better quality overall. If we went back to the Barcelo in the Mayan, we would definitely stay at the Palace side.

On a final note that is not related to the resort, we booked with Air Transat, and found the airline to be amazing! They went above and beyond every step of the way. They provide a warm meal that is really good and the flight attendants took care of us like we were their own family. When we landed in Winnipeg, it was really cold, so they gave us 2 blankets to keep our son warm!

Room Tip: We stayed in room 6172 & 6174 of the Jalisco building. It was close to the lobby and buffet but...

We stayed at Barceló Maya Colonial Febr 19 thru 26 lower level near the theater, kids swimming pool, and beach area which was perfect location for us. Thought the theater would be to noisy but it was just fine. Not many people at the entertainment every night. We made reservations to Steak House, Seafood, and Japanese all very good and something different from the same old same old food at the buffets. Didn't see much different in the food line up at the buffet was a disappointment after we have been to Riveria Maya area 7 times to different resorts and food was much better at others. Not a big fan of fish, rock hard steak and pork chops but to each there own. Where is the taco's, Burritos, enchil, etc. Japanese was outstanding.
People state that the beach is rocky, yes it is very rocky but go down to Barceló Maya Beach area it is the best sandy beach. Playa area beaches are much better and what we like without the rock issue.
You could purchase WIFI and it worked good when we purchased for one day just to keep in contact with family back home. Otherwise we called home. I would think they could provide free WIFI for ppl to keep in contact back home as a good PR gesture. Like other resorts we have stayed at.
We did enjoy getting away from the snow and relax on the sunny beach with a cold drink in hand.

This was the first resort we have ever traveled to down South. You get a lot of bang for your buck here.
We traveled with a group or 10 and everyone enjoyed themselves. The food was excellent here, especially the Mexican restaurant. We thought the food was terrific at the buffets and the restaurants.
Mexico has the best drinks. The bartenders and waiters were always willing to have fun with us making fancy drinks, doing entertaining tricks and memorable shots.
The rooms were nice and clean. However a bit musty. That is to be expected in such a humid environment and with the openness of the resort. Nothing the air conditioner and ceiling fan can't fix.
The beach was beautiful but there was quite a bit of rocks in the water, you have to be careful with. Seeing all of the tropical fish swim around your legs is pretty neat. We enjoyed the pools and walking on the beach.
The night shows were fantastic and we went to them every night. Nothing beat the Mexican Michael Jackson.
Barcelo was a great resort to stay at for our first all-in-inclusive trip. We loved Mexico.

Room Tip: Bring watershoes

Just got back from a ten days stay at this hotel. The resort is nice with lots of palm trees and lots of things to do but it is do for a little maintenance. The food was good, Japanese restaurant excellent! My big issue was the room, the beds were awful, like sleeping on a plywood with cheap sheets that were full of stains!!!! The room was not cleaned to our liking so we complain to manager. They did better job after but I think it was to shut us up!!! The patio door would not lock properly. The shows at night were good. We liked the Dolphinaris on the resort. Will not go back until the rooms are remodelled with new beds and pillows!!!!
