My girlfriend and I stayed here from 1/5 to 1/9. Overall, we had a really good time! Here are my observations of this hotel and the area, for anyone considering staying here in the future.
This hotel is one of 4 on the Palladium property. Because it is so big, you can expect a lot of walking, use of the hotel provided map, and lots of useful signs telling you where to go. If you're not into walking, go somewhere else. If you don't mind it then you will love strolling through the jungle areas and EXTREMELY WELL maintained grounds. Some of the native foliage and animals are labeled so guests can identify them if they see them. Be sure to check out the flamingos (right by the lobby) and the crocodile pen (by the Colonial buffets). While at the hotel, we saw a couple iguanas, a ringtail, and even a night monkey that was crawling around the inside beams of the roof of one of the restaurants we ate at - that was fun!
Following is a list of more specific observations:
Weather: Sunny everyday except the day we left. From about 11am to 4pm was straight rain and clouds. Nights were suprisingly warm and humid, much warmer than Puerto Vallarta is at night this time of year. Try and see the sunrise over the ocean if you can, at about 6 to 615am.
Check-in and check-out: staff was cordial but not overly friendly. About average. No problems on either Checkin or Checkout.
I was successful in emailing the reservation dept. in advance to request a room in building 7 with a King bed - and suprisingly they were able to make this request! Big Kudos to the reservation manager for that!
Beach: Excellent, with lots of chairs, white sand, and crystal clear waters. We saw many fish swimming around us ((and some MUCH bigger fish (maybe 4feet long) chasing these small fish around)) as we waded out into the water. Might be a good idea to bring sandals in the water as there are some small bands of coral rocks you might step on, but almost all sand otherwise. The Riviera and White Sands part of the hotel grounds had NO sandy beach at all, just rocks and a salt water pool. Nice beach buffet and bar real close by to grab a snack from. Resort staff were bringing out jugs of Sangria to drink, which I thought was a nice touch.
Rooms: We stayed in a 2nd floor standard suite which had plenty of room and a very nice bathroom. View of jungle. Only time we were in it was to sleep, so wasn't a big consideration for us at all. Great water pressure, hot and cold water, all water is purified so go ahead and drink from the tap if u want. Nobody got sick on this trip. Maid service did not bring us any towels for 2 straight days, which was somewhat odd, but a phone call to the front desk fixed the problem.
Food: We enjoyed the buffets which had a huge variety of food and since we were only there for 4 days we never got bored of it. I preferred the breakfasts to the buffet dinners. We ate at Ribs and More restaurant one night and Portofino italian the other night. Both had good quality food, minimal waits, and Portofino had the "night monkey" mentioned above that apparently shows up every night for his roll of bread! Guys need to wear slacks. It is advisable to reserve a time to eat at these ASAP after you checkin.
Drinks: Another nice touch was that the drink glasses (except for the beach bar) were actually glass, as opposed to the cheapo plastic cups you get at other places. Our favorite drinks were the Margaritas and Mojitos! I also liked the Kamikazes and Passion del Caribe's. The bartenders and wait staff were all at least pretty good (some were really good) and we tipped accordingly!
Other items:
You simply MUST go see Tulum, it is incredible and offers great photo opps. Good bodysurfing in the beach down below the ruins also. Iguana lizards run rampant here. Sundays are free to get in - didn't cost us anything.
Do not use a cab - use a collectivo. Much cheaper than a cab and gives you a bit more local culture. Only $2 or 20pesos per person one way to either Playa del Carmen or Tulum.
We did the Mayan Adventure snorkeling tour and would recommend it. Went snorkeling in Ya Kul lagoon and saw tons of fish and even a couple of barracuda. Then went snorkeling in a cenote which is a cavern filled with freshwater. Finally, cliffjumping and snorkeling in a sinkhole.
The mini - golf course was terrible, and you need mosquito repellent if you want to play there because you will get eaten alive. According to my girlfriend the spa was excellent. We also highly recommend a night time beach massage under the stars, although it is a bit pricey (but worth it).
I do wish we had a couple more days to stay there!
