“Comparing Caribe Section to Tropical and Palace Sections”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2011

Our 3rd trip to the Barcelo Maya (3 sections of this resort Beach/Caribe; Tropical/Colonial; and Palace), having stayed at the Tropical in 2007 and Palace in 2008. We stayed at the Caribe 2/24 -3/3/11. Being the least expensive section, we were not at all disappointed with the room size or amenities. If buffet air conditioning is important to you or the time of year requires it, stay at the other sections, because the Beach/Caribe buffets are open-air. Food was varied and tasty, but not as fancy as the other sections of resort. Restaurants for this section were not quite as impressive as other parts of resort, but still good. Even staying in the Beach/Caribe section, one still has access to all beach grills except for those of the Palace. We found the Tropical/Colonial beach grills to have a wider variety of food than the Beach/Caribe's Beach grills. If snorkeling is of interest, the Barcelo Maya has excellent snorkeling right off the beach. Best snorkeling is near the Palace, north end of the beach. We would recommend any section of this beautiful all-inclusive.

Safe, comfortable and got us from Point A to Point B. Sunwing offers a complementary glass of champagne, a hot meal, wine with dinner and the flight crew were friendly and professional. Once again, impressed with Sunwing Airlines. They even provided us with advice on how to get through the many time-share sharks waiting at the airport for our fresh meat.
The pilot landed 15 minutes early which eliminated our 15 minute delay in departing.
Transfer through immigration was easy, customs even easier.

Hotel Transfer
We were the first to be dropped off but it is a 1 hour, 15 minute drive to the resort. A new highway is being built through Playa Del Carmen which is effectively a city bypass which will eventually shave off an extra 20-25 minutes from the travel time. It looks almost done.

We booked at the Barcela Maya Beach and had requested building 3 (Uxmal). Sent our requests in a week early looking for the Uxmal Building (building 3), a second or third floor king size room with close proximity the beach. Instead, we were booked at the Barcelo Maya Caribe (adjoining resort) in building 5 on the first floor with king size room and close proximity to the beach. We TRIED to ask for a higher floor room but were told the resort was 100% full.

First impressions
The WARMTH. We left Toronto at -5C and arrived to +27 with humidity. We also quickly noticed that this resort has a very tropical jungle feel. Many of the pathways (which are either flagstone or tile) meander through tropical forest with low lighting. We appreciated this quite a bit because the sounds, too, were awsome.

Although not exactly what we wanted, it was better than expected. Building 5 (Sayil) sits in the middle of everything. Our room (5149) had a very private back yard, very clean and had a comfy king sized bed. Air conditioning and all facilities worked. There was a 32" LCD TV on the wall and the room was furnished with a couch and a small table with two chairs. Check out channel 27 or I think 48 after midnight; definitely not Nickelodeon.

Very lush, tropical and well groomed. We've been to the 5 star Bahia Principe's before and it's not QUITE up to those standards but pretty close. However, the size of the resort means a lot of work for the staff - and a LOT of Walking. I'll say again: a LOT OF WALKING!. They have a large shuttle bus that carries people from place to place but it is not reliable. Sometimes comes every 15 minutes, sometimes every 45. And if it's going to the Palace (and you're from anywhere else) they don't let you on.

Many pools with water temperature around 75-80F. Refreshing to cool down but quick to get adjusted to. There are hammocks and beach chairs surrounding all pools.

Amazing!. Long stretch of white sand with beautiful shades of aqua, turquoise and blue ocean water. Many Many beach chairs and CAN at times take a little time to find an un-toweled beach chair but we never couldn't find one. To avoid rocks in the water go to the Beach side (nothing but sandy bottom forever). The worst beach was over by the pier (but, consequently - that area is the best for snorkelling). Toplessness seemed to coincide with air temperature (temperature goes up, tops come down).

Not the best. We never left hungry but were somewhat disappointed after being spoiled elsewhere. Any 'Mexican' dish they served was EXCELLENT but for some odd reason they were always hesitant to serve mexican food. Sometimes they were a little slow refilling our 'agua hielo' but friendly banter with the attending waiter fixed that.

a la cartes
Mexican - VERY good. Portions were right, service great and the spanish coffee was SOO good.
Seafood - Likely because the ACTUAL seafood restaurant was closed for a wedding and we were bumped to the Beach Grill for the seafood dinner, but the food was not good. We had no menu and only five choices (one of which was chicken - in all my life I've never seen a Chicken while snorkelling so I'm not sure how this qualifies as seafood).
Oh yeah, the Wine here - YUCK! Red Wine improved after choking down the third glass but the white was like spoiled grapejuice. They must not cellar their bottles.

Animacion team were always active at the Beach pool, but somehow they made it uncomfortable to participate. I usually take up any offers to do anything but this year - nothing. Could've been me but I think it had something to do with the staff preferring pretty girls playing rather than guys.

Shows were good. You can choose between two theaters (Kukulkan which is between the Beach and Caribe or Palenque which is between the Tropical and Colonial) They shocked my wife a few times with the lack of costume that the girls wear - especially the 'Latin fever' show. I commented that we were sitting in 'perverts row' every time we found a spot up close at the stage.

A new theme park opened since we were last in the Mayan Riviera - Xplor. An Absolute MUST GO for any adventurer - and do it on your own (don't book a tour). Take the Colectivo off the main highway (20 pesos per person) and walk in yourself. The excursion includes endless ziplines (wear a bathing suit), underground river rafting, underground river swim and an ATV course. By going yourself, you can do many things twice and you will fill your day (and not have to worry about being back at a certain time).
Second excursion - CocoBongo. WOW!!!!!!! They say you'll get drunk and come home on your butt and it is SO true. It initially feels cramped and scary but quickly lives up to the price of all-inclusive admission. I LOVE THE BALLOONS!!!! Plan for a day or two of recovery afterwards :).

something new
For the first time ever we took Mexican public transit, aka the Colectivo (pronounced Cull-ek-TEE-vo). It's better than a city bus in "name your city in North America". They expect tourists and costs either 20 or 30 pesos. It's cool to share transit with the locals (mostly workers coming to and from the resort).

We asked for late checkout on the last morning and it was approved (although we had to pay an extra $60USD). We paid our remaining tab (all gift shops and other shops on the resort allow you to charge anything to your room so there is no need to carry cash except for tipping). We gave her our towel cards and room keys and were off.

Flight home
On time, uneventful, safe and professional. Meal was good (pasta) and the flight crew were once again wonderful. We most definitely will book with SunWing again.

Again a GREAT trip. Do not read into the media hype destroying the beautiful reputation that the Mayan Riviera and Cancun deserves. Even the locals there agree that most problems are caused by the superiority complex of some tourists believing the locals are only their to 'serve'. I love Mexico, was married there and would definitely return.

My wife and I travelled with our 7 year old son and 11 year old daughter. The Barcelo complex is 5 resorts and is not so large that you can't walk it quite comfortably. We stayed at the Caribe and were overall, really impressed with the facilities and the people.

Rooms were clean, made up on time and stocked daily. Beds were clean and firm and provided a great nights sleep. Each room has the standard equipment (radio, tv, full bath, coffee/tea) All equipment was modern and in working order.

Buffetts were better than average. Great mix of mexican, european and canadian food. Quality of the food was good. For the kids, not sure how important the selection is. My son ate hot dogs every lunch, waffles and french toast every breakfast...and whatever we put on his plate for dinners. My 11 year daughter had a mix of adult/kds fair. There is a great selection of kids food so that will not be an issue. Kids and parents enjoyed the buffet.

A la cartes were good. Don't be surprised if you don't get in to them. We were on the club premium plan, had access to all the a la cartes in all the resorts but Palace and only managed to get into 3 of them. Japanese was good, Mexican was good but the Steakhouse was a bit of a dissapointment. The beef was fatty, very thin but had a good flavour.

Beaches in from of Caribe and Beach are the best. There are rocks on all the beaches but almost none in front of Caribe/Beach. Never the less, bring water shoes...you can buy them there for a lot...or from home for much cheaper. Also, the resorts are close enough together that is a short walk from any of the resorts to Caribe/Beach. No alchohol service on the beach so bring your own insulated container and stock up at the pool bars! Beach chairs are plentiful so please don't through your towels down on them at 7 in the morning.

Caribe pools (2) are big and clean but have limited kids activities. The water park though is right beside caribe...a 2 minute walk so don't let this impact where you end up staying. Even from the farthest part of the resort...you are looking at a 10 minute walk only. The water park at Colonial (beside Caribe) is fantastic for kids below the age of 10. My 11 year old was bored after a bit. Be prepared to a ton of kids.

Outoor activities for the kids at Caribe was really quite good. There is outdoor ping pong, min golf, rock climbing, trampoline, a host of other outdoor climbing activities, outdoor chess, basketball.

Just some suggestions...if you are staying as part of a tour package...consider paying for separate transportation from Cancun to Maya Caribe. It is a normal 1 hour drive by taxi (cost approx $145 return) or 21/2 hour by tour bus stopping at all the resorts. This allows you to check in as well ahead of the crowd. Also consider the Premium Club. It gets you the best rooms and service at Caribe, discounts on resort services, priority checkin and check out, free internet services and your own quiet eating area for breakfast and dinner should you choose. Its expensive though at 80 US per day but we though it was worth it.

There are alot of attractions close to the resort. Consider visiting Playa del Carmen for shopping (but be prepared for some gentle salesmen), Xelha or Xcaret for the eco park tours for the kids as they love them (we have been to both and for the kids, Xcaret is only slightly better and both are expensive...especially if you choose some extra activities). Tulum is quite nice as well. Just research the area...the resort is close to all attractions.

Service from the staff was really good and we had no issues. Consider tipping the room cleaner 1-3 dollars a day and maybe a few dollars for the buffetts for the servers. They make about 50 peso's a day (5 dollars) so they are always appreciative of the consideration.

This was the most stress free vacation we have had with the kids and we have been to 7 resorts in the Carribean. This resort was perfect for the kids as all activities were close. Food and service were excellent. I would certainly recommend Maya Caribe.

This is the first review I've submitted. Stayed 6 days with my wife and two other couples (2/25/11-3/2/11). Here's what you need to know:

--This is a huge complex, 5 resorts in one, all connected... very safe, extremely well maintained. If you like walking, you can walk the grounds or beach for quite a while. Very pretty to stroll the grounds at night. Also amazingly quiet, even with activities going on.

--The resorts get more upscale as you go, but the most upscale resort (Maya Palace) has the worst beach, but is all suites, and has the best pool. The Tropical and Colonial share a huge pool, and the beach is little better. The Caribe and Beach resorts have the best beaches. Lots of palm trees and lounge chairs. Easy enough access to pools and swim up bars.

--The buffets are decent, and food was always replenished. Getting reservations at non-buffet restaurants at times you want is a challenge, but not that big a deal. Service was consistently good.

--There are two amphitheatres with shows--they usually last one hour and are okay--nothing outstanding. Easy to get seats, and they have table service at the shows. Never had to wait long for drinks.

--Our rooms were standard, clean and comfortable, nothing flashy. Did not spend very much time in the room. A safe was available, as well as a stocked fridge (included). No issues with AC, bugs, noise, or any malfunctions.

--Did a day trip to Xel-ha and Tulum. Too much time in the bus picking others up. But Xel-ha was a lot of fun... snorkeling, cliff jumping, zip lines over water, natural lazy river, caves... this is an eco park with something for everyone. Food and drink included in price. Book through hotel. For a large extra cost, you can swim with dolphins here... they do a nice job. Ruins at Tulum were quite interesting, and the Mayan culture is fascinating...the Mayans built their temples on the prettiest stretch of beach in Mexico. I would not recommend doing both in the same day... you need an entire day just for Xel-ha.

--Overall, the beach at the Maya Beach resort is excellent, and that was what I was looking for. Combine that with a sprawling resort (actually five in one), and you get a nice experience where you don't feel crowded. You can be with the crowds or avoid them. Highly recommend staying here if you want a great beach. If you're looking for big time nightlife, stay in Cancun (lots of good choices there for that).

After reading reviews on this resort for about 9 months, we decided to give it a try. We were a total of 9 people: 4 adults and 5 kids (13, 10, 9, 7, 6). We arrived late night with very tired children and had no problems checking in whatsoever. The front desk people and the bellman were extremely kind and attentive. My family was in a suite in the Sayil building. There was a master bedroom with a jacuzzi and a full bathroom, and the other room had a living area, pull out couch, cot and a half bathroom. Our balcony was double sized with comfy rocking chairs/table and a hammock. Our mini fridge was regularly stocked with plenty of soft drinks/beer/waters. The room was tastefully decorated and immaculate. I am a neat freak and it went way beyond my standards. The grounds are breathtaking! We never saw an overflowing garbage can, garbage on the beach (except a few cigarette butts left by rude and inconsiderate people) or any debris on the walkways. My cousin's husband owns a landscaping business and even he was fully impressed by the grounds. The food was excellent. We live in a part of New York that offers some of the best restaurants in the world and we were very pleased with the food. The service was wonderful too and we were always greeted by friendly and warm faces. The pools were all clean and no they are not heated, but who wants to jump into a hot pool to cool off? Warm pool water breeds bacteria anyway.
My only suggestions for the resort might be to have more smoking/non smoking sections for those of us who do not want our kids inhaling second hand smoke while eating, bar service at the beach and maybe an extra bartenders working behind the busier bars. Otherwise, there was absolutely nothing to complain about.
In reference to some of the complaints I read about, the sound of birds waking one up in the morning should be looked upon as a beautiful sound of nature. Maybe a few less margaritas the night before and it would not seem bothersome. Also, about the open air buffets....I thought people traveled to beautiful and tropical places so they could hear sounds of nature and feel warm breezes - not sit in air conditioning closed off from the outside world. It seems like most of the silly complaints I have seen here in the past have to do with personalities.
Our biggest gripe at the resort was some of the other guests, whose ethnicity I will leave unknown. People need to realize that you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar!!!! These people work harder than anyone I have ever seen in my life and tips go a long, long way. They are very appreciative. We would definitely return and hopefully some day we will!!

First of all I would like to put those of you that are concerned about this resort at ease. I found a fair amount of scary comments after I booked our trip back in November, and worried about those reviews right up til we arrived at the property.

I travelled with my wife and 2 kids age 10 and 12. We loved our trip! My wife and I have visited 4 all inclusive resorts in Mexico, and have yet to be dissatisfied.

The Property- Wonderful! Great pools, beatiful grounds and buildings, Incredible beach, and as clean a property as you will find.
The Staff- Awesome! Great People, we became friends with many staff members and here are a few to look for in case you go -
Mary Hernandez - Manager at the main Caribe buffet ( Breakfast & Dinner ). She took great care of us everyday of our trip.
Rosy - Mary's sister and manager of the Spanish Restaurant " Don Quiote". Very nice and attended to our every need.
George - Mary and Rosa Brother and manager of the Steak House and Seafood restaurants ( 3 days each ). Great Host and again made sure we were well taken care of.
Flor- Works at the Pool next to the Capt. Morgans Grill. Incredibly sweet woman! You will know her when yoiu see a hard working woman with a tray of drinks on her head.
Bar staff at the swim up pool - They will make sure you have a great time! There is always a fun group hanging out there sharing shots.

The shows - We went every night and loved them all. Our kids had a ball. I'm not a Michael Jackson fan, but the Michael Jackson show made me into one. Go to the shows and enjoy.

The Buffets - If you're incredibly picky you may have difficulty here, but 90% of you will be very happy with the food. Breakfast was my favorite including omlettes to order, fresh fruit and vegetable shakes, homemade donuts, and esspresso/caffe lattes to order.

Snorkeling was great right off of the pier, the beaches and pools had plenty of seating and shade for those who burn on the first day ( be careful!). It was in the 80's and sunny everyday for us.

The Jaguar "Disco" was a blast. Somehow we ended up their with about 200 superheros, what a wild night for me and the wife!

I think many of the bad reviews are from people who have ridiculously high standards, and I have pretty high standards myself.

You will enjoy this resort, and we will visit again!

Just returned from a fabulous week at this resort. This is our second Barcelo resort (also stayed at the Puerto Plata resort) and we were not dissappointed. This is a huge resort, so be prepared for lots of walking to be able to see and experience all this resort has to offer. The grounds;gorgeous, immaculate, clean. The rooms;comfortable, clean and fully stocked with everything from slippers and robes, to a well stocked bar fridge. The staff were the friendliest and most hard working people I have ever met and we will miss them all, especially Flor, the server who can balance a fully loaded tray of drinks on her head around the pool area. The food; the buffets were very good, and the ala cartes were very good! I would recommend booking your ala cartes with the concierge in your building as opposed to using the concierge in the hotel lobby. The service was superb and we had no complaints.
The beach; beautiful looking and very clean. But you have to walk over to the Beach side to be able to walk in without walking on coral. My husband got a nasty cut on his foot from the coral, so I would recommend water shoes if staying at the Caribe and more so if staying at the Tropical/Colonial side. It was pretty windy every day, but we managed to have no problem being able to use the sailboats and kayaks and play beach volleyball.
There is no pressure from the animation team at the Caribe part of the resort as most activities were either in the Beach or Tropical parts of the resort. This included aqua-aerobics and introduction to scuba. This means you have to walk over to the other resorts if you want to participate in these activities. There was archery and air rifle too if you wanted. The mini-putt was in the front of the resort in the jungle which was pretty interesting and the tennis courts and Pitch and Putt were in great shape. The gym/workout area had all types of equipment for your workout as well as a sauna, jacuzzi and showers. Nightlife: The evening shows were much better than what we experienced in the Dominican as the performers were not the staff putting on a show, but paid entertainers. The theatres were beautiful and the service staff efficient. The Disco was huge and the music similar to what you'd expect in any major city's clubs.
If you want to do trips off the resort, there are many agents who can help you book whatever tours you'd like from swimming with the dolphins, booking a restaurant in Playa del Carmen, to visiting the Mayan ruins. All speak English, so all you have to do is ask and they will accomodate you.
We arrived at midnight from Toronto and had no difficulties with the reception staff. Our return flight was late in the evening and there was a room adjacent to the reception area to put your luggage and lockers to put your valuables. We were allowed to use the showers at the gym so we did not feel the need to pay extra for late check outs.
All in all, the Caribe is the quieter part of this large resort, and if that is what you're looking for, then you will not be dissappointed. If you want more action, book a room in one of the other parts of the hotel such as the Beach, or Tropical or Colonial or be prepared to walk. If you want luxury, then the Palace will be right up your alley. Would we go back to this resort? Probably, but as we prefer to be closer to the action, we will
