We were originally booked our 14 day vacation at the Maya Beach, and were moved to Caribe when we arrived. Not sure why? No explanation could be provided when asked (front desk staff did not speak English very well), and could say that the only rooms available at the Beach were at a cost of $1500 upgrade. Yet, we could clearly see empty rooms throughout our entire vacation. The newly renovated Beach complex would have been our preference! The Caribe is a little outdated, and in need of renovations. After one night in a regular room, we opted to upgrade to an Ocean view room with Premium Club status. (The unlimited a-la-carte option, available at 4 of the 5 resorts, was the main reason for this.) Once moved into our new room, unfortunately, we had to ask that the bathroom be re-cleaned. When it wasn't done, we opted to write a note in Spanish, so that the maid service could understand what needed to be done. After this, and leaving a tip, our room was nicely cleaned and re-stocked every day.
BEACHES: The beaches at all 5 of the Barcelo resorts are wonderful. There were plenty of chairs, and because all 5 resorts are connected by one big long sandy beach, you can take advantage of ALL of them. Snorkeling was pretty decent too.
BUFFETS: The buffets were nice, always clean, and with a good variety of fruit and foods. We understand it is tough to please so many different cultures and tastes, so we were not overly critical. Note: Our breakfast buffet server (Hassim) was the BEST! If you did not see something you wanted or needed, he would find it for you. He was very personalble, could speak many languages, and his memory was simply outstanding.
ALA-CARTE: We booked and tried almost every ala-carte restaurant and we were never disappointed. The Spanish rated the lowest with us, but it just wasn’t our preferred taste. Lobster (seafood), steak, and Japanese were all great!
LOUNGES/PUBS: These were all good. Service was decent. Premium Club lounge was always empty, and it was a nice reprieve when we wanted or needed it.
STAFF: All very friendly. Exception...Front desk staff were very slow, and their English skills need improving. Plus, they really needed to enforce the rules of waiting your turn with so many people. Many of guests would just walk right up past the line ups (cut in) and proceed to be helped by the staff without any consideration of all the people waiting in a lineup before they got there.
