“Great Hotel, worth it for sure!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2014

We just got back from a 7 day trip to Mexico, staying at the Barcelo Maya Caribe. When we first pulled up we were a little underwhelmed with the entrance because the Caribe lobby itself is a little outdated, from what I understand it was part of the original hotel but who cares seriously cares about the lobby. Checking in was a breeze, we arrived just before 3pm, they mentioned that we would have to wait until 3pm to actually get into our room so we hit the bar and enjoyed a few beers and walked to the pool area. The pool/beach area is totally the BEST part of the hotel, they have it situated so the pools are 20 feet from the beautiful beach! We've been to a few hotels where you have to take a trolly to the beach, pile on with everyone and then there is only a small section of beach that you're able to enjoy. This resort has 5 different areas with beach lining the entire area of hotel front. There are lots of chairs to use both at the beach and the pools. The resort seemed to be fairly busy but there were still lots of chairs available! The beach front also is semi divided by a pier that you can swim/snorkel at which was super fun, there are LOTS of fish to look at and if you go farther down towards the Maya Palace there is more reef with lots more fish. The snorkel gear at the resort is average, I brought my own mask but rented fins but my fiance used the resorts and it wasnt the greatest but what do you expect when they rent to thousands of people! The staff were really friendly at the "dive shop" and super helpful. We ended up taking a snorkel tour and saw a HUGE stingray and a sea turtle which was actually really cool.

The rooms in the Caribe were dated but decent, we could have upgraded but we weren't there to stay in our rooms. The room was average, big bathrooms, kind sized bed, we had a couch and a nice balcony that was secluded which was kinda nice.

The french restaurant was amazing. We only really went to the Maya Beach buffet to eat if we ate on the resort and we sat in Ivan's section by request-every single morning. Ivan was a superior server, this guy worked SO hard, it seemed like everyone wanted to sit in his section because he was just so personable. The entire time we were there he was always on his game, we'd get there and he would remember the drinks we had the previous morning, cappucino with baileys (so good, try it) and a mimosa, the drinks would be there by the time we got back with our food without even asking us what we wanted (he totally deserves a raise and a promotion).

It was cloudy on a few days and the staff provided entertainment in the theater for people also which was nice.

I'd say the only downside is that people are working 24/7 to keep things going and you can hear them in the hallways every once in a while but its mostly carts with clean linens.

Side note: There is an AMAZING restaurant/hotel just south called Al Cielo which is right on the beach, massages were $30/ 30 minutes and the dinner was super tasty. Totally worth checking out!

I would 100% go back and bring friends and family

Room Tip: Upgrade to the rooms with the jacuzzi on the decks. They looks luxe!

The hotel was clean, but outdated. Food was nothing to write home about. If I had caught a last minute deal, this may have been worth it, however for the price I paid, I expected much more. While we were there in March 2013, the hotel was booked with many vacationing students from Spain. Every morning at 4-6 am I was woken up by their return to the hotel from clubbing in the nearby city. The programming staff were wonderful, but were geared towards the drunk teen crowd. The nightly entertainment was not great and when karaoke night came around and was quite popular and well attended, it was cut off right at the 90 minute mark despite obvious interest from guests. I suspect that some more leeway in these matters would lead to a better guest experience- rather than follow a strict schedule, allow things that are going well to go on a bit longer.

Our family of 5 stayed in connecting rooms at the Caribe between Christmas and New Year's. They have a beautiful stretch of beach for the 5 Barcelo hotels. Too bad the management let the trash and debris build up to a frightening level before they cleaned the beach. I'm told upper management was arriving for the new year. That's when the beach was FINALLY cleaned. (I'll post a picture. It's nauseating.) If I had small children, I couldn't have let them play by the water's edge. A fellow guest saw a hypodermic needle at the edge of the beach. The rooms are very dated. Plenty of water stains and other stains. We tipped the maids everyday and still had one bar of soap for the week. Mini bar was not restocked with soda, despite multiple notes in Spanish. The restaurants and buffer at the Colonial and Tropical were MUCH nicer. This was our second trip to the Barcelo. We'll never stay here again. It's back to Bavaro Beach in the Dominican Republic. The hotels there care about maintaining their beautiful beaches! Two stars only because of the upgraded food.

Dear aam1964: Many thanks for your comments regarding your stay at Barceló Maya Caribe, sorry that you left with this negative view of our property, it is unusual for us as our beach is considered amongst the best in the Riviera Maya.
I am happy to let you know that we have a full beach cleaning program, both by machine in the early hours and manually throughout the day. Best Regards,

This was an all inclusive package. For the prize we got it - It was a great deal. This was a girls trip and it was a great experience from the moment we arrived to the end of the trip. We enjoyed all of the property and sister locations next to Maya Caribe. The rooms where clean and all the staff members where very friendly. The location is beautiful for long walks and swimming. Tulum, Coba and other popular sites where pretty close that we drove to them. We rented a local car and tour all around. Playa del Carmen is a lot of fun too. Take the fairy over to the Conzumel. I will definitely stay here or in one of the other sister hotels. 5 resorts together. Lovely

Stayed at Barcelo Maya Caribe from Dec 28 - Jan 4, 2014. Had an awesome holiday, excellent hotel. We will definately return to the Barcelo Maya hotels, however next year the Barcelo Maya Colonial - better for kids, in my opinion.

Hotel was clean, staff was friendly, pools were great with lots activities for the kids and bar service for the adults. Food was the typical all-inclusive fare with a very large selection. New Years Eve was fantastic, we were disappointed that we couldn't get an a la carte reservation for the evening, but the hotel put an amazing dinner together at the buffet. We loved it!

Pros - directly on the beach, with no one on the beach trying to sell souvenirs or the like. Adequate pool, beach, and resort amenities. Great kids club with organized hourly activities and all-day impromptu stuff as well.

Cons - price, it was quite high and as a result felt the value for the money we spent was a little low. The "Caribe" hotel had one simple pool with a kids wading pool, whereas the "Beach" and "Colonial" hotels (directly beside the Caribe) had much more elaborate pools with splash areas and water sports right in the pool.

Hotel would be great for people looking for a quiet get away, with or without kids. Traveling with kids under 10? I'd recommend the Barcelo Maya Colonial - it has an amazing kids pool, but also has all the amenities that the other hotels have.

Room Tip: An upgrade to "Club Premium" is worth it. Rooms are closer to the beach, you receive prior...

Group of 12 aged 16-55 stayed Dec. 27-Jan 3 at Barceló Maya Beach Caribe. Overall a good week, beautiful weather, but we likely will not return to this hotel again. Have stayed at Grand Palladium, Riu and Bahai Principe which we liked better.
Pros: best beach anywhere, very friendly staff, always helpful, beautiful pools, clean resort, nice lobby and lobby bar
Lows: in our 6 rooms we experienced the following, although not all in one room so the pain was spread evenly! AC never worked, power outages,TV not working, phone not working, WiFi not working, no hot water, no cold water, no towels at beach.Reporting it to front desk required multiple complaints.
Buffet was good, not the best, but you can always find something you like.Mexican restaurant was very good but almost impossible to get reservations anywhere, had to settle for 5:20 pm.New Years eve show was a big disappointment, just not good talent compared to other shows at other resorts.Lots of activities available, ;you cannot say you were bored, or lots of quiet relaxing on the beach.Do not book the ATV tour from the hotel, it is a ripoff for 50$.Snorkelling right in front of hotel saw lots of fish, turtles, stingrays etc..Sports bar ambience is not very good, not a relaxing place to catch your team.Gym was good enough.
Spa was just OK.Massage therapist was good but the showers in the spa were terrible, almost tipped over and only two available. Loved the spa at Grand Palladium compared to Barceló.
Rooms we had were a bit dated and the bathroom was actually a bit mouldy and could hardly see in the mirrors. Bed was comfy and patio was nice. Mini bar always restocked.
We booked last minute leading up to Christmas and were still able to get 6 rooms together so they must not have been in big demand. Our first 3 choices were sold out, so we kind of new we were not getting the best hotel.
We did still really enjoy our stay, because we were together as a group and most of our time was spent outside at the beach, and figured it was extra busy between Christmas and New Years, but as a group who have travelled a lot in Mexico, DR, Costa Rica, Cuba we would not choose this resort again.

Room Tip: Rooms on Caribe, ground floor 1167 not recommended

Originally booked for Maya Beach but under construction, did get a walk thru b4 left with bar waitress by Elana. Looks great. All staff fantastic, as well and food very good. Beach bar staff great- shout out to Danny, liana, Francesco and new Dad Rigaberto. Unfortunetly on my last night fainted hurting my ankle. After 1 call to front desk a wheelchair was provided and help with luggage, best day travel took over and wheelchair service at airport in Cancun by WestJet there when arrived. We had been upgraded as well as return visitors. Experiece fabulous from start to finish
