We just got back from a 7 day trip to Mexico, staying at the Barcelo Maya Caribe. When we first pulled up we were a little underwhelmed with the entrance because the Caribe lobby itself is a little outdated, from what I understand it was part of the original hotel but who cares seriously cares about the lobby. Checking in was a breeze, we arrived just before 3pm, they mentioned that we would have to wait until 3pm to actually get into our room so we hit the bar and enjoyed a few beers and walked to the pool area. The pool/beach area is totally the BEST part of the hotel, they have it situated so the pools are 20 feet from the beautiful beach! We've been to a few hotels where you have to take a trolly to the beach, pile on with everyone and then there is only a small section of beach that you're able to enjoy. This resort has 5 different areas with beach lining the entire area of hotel front. There are lots of chairs to use both at the beach and the pools. The resort seemed to be fairly busy but there were still lots of chairs available! The beach front also is semi divided by a pier that you can swim/snorkel at which was super fun, there are LOTS of fish to look at and if you go farther down towards the Maya Palace there is more reef with lots more fish. The snorkel gear at the resort is average, I brought my own mask but rented fins but my fiance used the resorts and it wasnt the greatest but what do you expect when they rent to thousands of people! The staff were really friendly at the "dive shop" and super helpful. We ended up taking a snorkel tour and saw a HUGE stingray and a sea turtle which was actually really cool.
The rooms in the Caribe were dated but decent, we could have upgraded but we weren't there to stay in our rooms. The room was average, big bathrooms, kind sized bed, we had a couch and a nice balcony that was secluded which was kinda nice.
The french restaurant was amazing. We only really went to the Maya Beach buffet to eat if we ate on the resort and we sat in Ivan's section by request-every single morning. Ivan was a superior server, this guy worked SO hard, it seemed like everyone wanted to sit in his section because he was just so personable. The entire time we were there he was always on his game, we'd get there and he would remember the drinks we had the previous morning, cappucino with baileys (so good, try it) and a mimosa, the drinks would be there by the time we got back with our food without even asking us what we wanted (he totally deserves a raise and a promotion).
It was cloudy on a few days and the staff provided entertainment in the theater for people also which was nice.
I'd say the only downside is that people are working 24/7 to keep things going and you can hear them in the hallways every once in a while but its mostly carts with clean linens.
Side note: There is an AMAZING restaurant/hotel just south called Al Cielo which is right on the beach, massages were $30/ 30 minutes and the dinner was super tasty. Totally worth checking out!
I would 100% go back and bring friends and family
