“Disappointed with second visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2013

This was my second visit and sadly construction going on and one Pool and beach bar was closed
Which was annoying as this was where we liked to sit on the beach away from crowd so long walk back for drinks.
Rooms are getting a little tired.
Also agree with other review about coupons complete waste all ours went in bin.
Bar in lobby so busy felt sorry for the barman as we had rain and everyone was in this tiny bar not in beach bars no one thought lets send another barman inside!!!
Self serve coffee machines have been removed from lobby which made the bar busier with people asking for coffees as well as alcoholic drinks.
Staff very friendly couldn't ask for nicer people always ready to help and say hola as they pass.
Grounds are kept immaculate even with torrential storm.
We had a good time but probably would not return again as entertainment was the same as 3 years ago and is repeated so if you are there for two weeks you have to sit through it twice and some of it was bad enough once also it only lasted for about an hour and finished at 10.30 when you was told to go to night club as we are not night club people our evenings finished a little early.

Room Tip: Not sure there is much difference one you may be nearer beach but then you got further to walk to di...

Overall good experience at the hotel. The room was clean but too many mosquitos. I got bit everyday in the room as well as in the grounds of the resort. We did ask the front desk to spray our room but the mosquitos were still there. I don't like the fact that our package wasn't that clear to us. When we checked in the agent said our package included the Barcelo Maya Tropical part as well but then she said it wasn't included. Very confusing. Then she tried really hard to upsell us. The checkin process was too slow (took over 40 mintues)and unorganized. I don't like the fact that althogh we get $2000 worth of coupons but you actually can't really use them with out paying a arm and a leg for the services. For example we got a coupon for $20 off of internet usage but I have to pay a extra $26 on top of the coupon to utilize the coupon?! Also the $200 room upgrade coupon can be used only to upgrade to a suite (Although the coupon doesn't state that!) and they'll charge you $50 per night on top of the coupon. I don't see the value in these coupons suckering us to pay more. It's a waste of time honestly. Wi-fi should be free these days. It cost the hotel nothing to start up but charging $16 per day for wifi ONLY in the lobby area is ridiculous!

Room Tip: Bring misquito repelant!

Constructions are going on everywhere... Don't be fooled... No minor renovations or updating the old rooms, facilities, etc. This already-mega, already-crowded resort is being expanded further for more profits...!! Impossible to relax. Constant construction noise, very noisy rooms and noisy visitors ruined our vacation. We're terribly disappointed with the overall low quality and will regret forever we booked this resort. Stay away from Barcelo!

Room Tip: Every room is very noisy. Hallways are open air so there is a constant echo 24-7!!! No matter whic...

It was a pleasant welcome at the Barcelo Maya Caribe Resort with welcoming drinks and going through the amenities that were included in our trip. One important point I should make and many people were misled by the use of you will receive $1,200 in credits. This does not mean free dollars!!! These are just coupons that equal up to $1,200 in cash. So if you stayed four nights through Apple Vacations you would receive the credits. That was a major upset. The beach was beautiful, the pool, grounds, and staff were very pleasant and friendly. It would have been nice if some of the staff new English a little better. Just some complains that I would like to mention is that our air condition went out in the middle of the night, but the staff was very quick about getting to our room to fix it. We received a note that we would not have power for three hours during the day. (Which was in the middle of the afternoon) The water pressure in the bathroom was very low and at one time the water coming out the sink was dirt...Very unacceptable. Last but not least, we received a nice plate of tarts every night in our room with bottle of champain and the one night it was not wrapped tight enough and the ants in Mexico are very bad if you are staying on the first floor. Apparently, my friend bit into the tart and felt something coming out of her mouth and ran to the bathroom and there were ants in ther mouth.. So unacceptable and was a major health issue. So we contacted the Manager at the front desk and they sent security and just ask if my friend was ok and that was it. I told them that this was not a good thing and we should have been treated better. Overall, we enjoyed the weather and the Barcelo Tropical, Colonial, and Deluxe Place. The Caribe had the best beach and the best pool side entertainment. I would go back but stay at either the Tropical or Colonial.

Barcelo delivers quality and that's what we wanted.

Pros:
-Clean rooms
-Friendly staff
-the buffet offered a smaller selection yet the quality was outstanding
-Clean pool
-Clean and beautiful beaches
-surprisingly comfortable bed
-Literally in front of the beach

Cons
-Rude guests - there was a group in the pool every day of my stay, very rude and vulgar, it was their first time outside their country and had a mouthful of things I rather not repeat.
-Small buffet selection
-Not as luxurious as Palace or Colonial (I don't really care for that)

Stayed here for 2weeks for my honeymoon and wish we'd stayed only for one. The buffet foods good for a week after that it's jus samey. They reuse the lunch food for the evening. The waiters either ignore you or forget your full order. The a locate restaurant are hit an miss. Dont bother with the Spanish as well im not sure they know what spanish food is as it could have been any nationality. Mexian amazing same for the Japanese and Caribbean. Steak house was average. Dont be fooled the bottle of wine on the table is not included. The drinks were really good at the bars. Captin morgans was great. Shows were abit crap apart from the mexian fiasta. Rooms are amazing and the mini bar is great. Note if you intend to wash any clothes bring the chairs from outside in ur room and leave them in thier took only a day to dry in the room where as it took 5 days outside. Beach is lovely sea is very rocky. Pool lovely shame same entertainment each day with the same songs an the same attention seeking people doing them. Shops are good we were told they were more expensive than outside which we didn't find to be true. Mini golf was great. Use the bus to goto tulum really cheap an friendly and safe. Dont go on the romantic cruise not worth the money an u only sail out to the middle of cancun harbour not romantic locking at the cancun (lil las vagus) hotels. The hotel grounds are great and when it rains it didn't really flood which it did at other hotels. Overall was ok didnt really feel it was worth the money we paid though.

This was our 3rd visit to the resort and we still very much enjoy it. Food is great, especially at specialty restaurants Kyoto and Agave. I recommend paying to upgrade to club premium when you arrive it's $20 each person a day but totally worth it. Night shows are entertaining considering they are free, service is great and cleanliness is never a problem for us. I cannot wait to go back hopefully next year.
