“Good but would not go back”

We had a lovely time. We took our two grown children and my son's girlfriend.
When we arrived they said there was a miscommunication with our room. If we would choose a 'lesser' accomdation they would give us points towards all the restaurants.
This was fine, but we found you needed five or six days notice to get into the nicer restaurants. We were there only 4 nights. We sort of felt "scammed."

But we were happy and enjoying ourselves. I bought my first piece of silver jewelry nearby. I tucked it into my suitcase just before checking out. By the time I arrived at the airport the ring was gone. I know it happened within the time we had a bell boy and a cab show up to take us to airport.

Room Tip: Don't put anything valuable in your suitcase, or else watch it at all times when you are checkin...

We just returned from a one week stay at Barcelo. We had booked the Caribe and were there 4 nights when they moved us (an upgrade) to the Colonial as they were planning to close the Caribe for maintenance.

We had a wonderful time while there. The rooms in both were clean and nicely maintained. The in-room refrigerator was stocked well and when moved to the Colonial (Club Premium) also included some light snacks: peanuts, chips, etc.

The beach was lovely and water was crystal clear-I believe it was better in the Caribe portion. In Colonial it was rather rocky. The small pier between the two hotels had plenty of fish-so check out the free snorkeling equipment (I believe it is 1 hour per day) and can get some good pix. Also rode the water bikes, which was fun, a bit like paddle boats. My husband and kids also took advantage of the pool scuba lesson.

We enjoyed the pool at the Colonial...plenty of activities for everyone...my 14 yr. old daughter and 17 yr old son especiallly enjoyed the water volleyball and the water polo. Swim up bars were great at all the pools.

We ate most of our meals at the Caribe buffet. Service was great----especially Gary and Ezley, they were our favorites. We didn't speak much Spanish, and they didn't speak much English, but that was actually part of the fun. We made it through and everyone was very accomodating. Breakfast was my personal favorite (probably because I don't care for seafood which was offered during the lunch and dinner menus). We ate lunch most times at one of the grills...either Captain Morgan or Mariachi. Even if you are a picky eater, you could definitely get enough to eat. Quantity is not lacking. Our family favorites included the made to order omelets and pasta, guacamole, and the soft serve vanilla ice cream. Just a heads up, the service at the grills was pathetic...we could never get anyone to give us drinks. Wish they would make it a self serve beverage bar (no alcohol) so that wouldn't happen. Inconvenient, but not anything that would ruin our stay. We never used our ala carte resturant certificates as we packed only casual wear and didn't want to make reservations either.

We booked our excursions with Jose from Lomas Travel (he has a desk at the Colonial). We enjoyed snorkeling, ATVs, zip lining, and a shopping trip to Playa del Carmen. Other than that, we enjoyed the amenities that Barcelo offered.

When we booked our trip, it was with hesitation after reading the reviews, but we had a wonderful stay, the resort was beautiful, and we look forward to visiting again.

After round trip through Mexico we ended in this resort for the last five days. We had a very good time - nice people and goof food. We received two vouchers for a-la-carte restaurants but an extra visit only costs 15 dollar per person so we decide to also visit the Japanese restaurant.

My Wife and I went to the Barcelo Maya Caribe on the 1/09/12 for 2 weeks. (Upgraded to Club Premium)

The Beach is stunning and the sea is crystal clear (all though we had a few days where it was cloudy), there are plenty of water-sports Jet ski's, Canoes etc, of which we used and enjoyed.

There are a number of reviews saying the staff are not friendly, well this was not our experience as they were always saying Hello and tried their best to have a conversation with us. I would imagine most of the comments about the staff being rude are from Americans as they don't appear to have a lot of respect for the workers.

The food, well this is mixed. The buffet is generally much better than the restaurants that you have to book. The Mexican should be amazing but it was dreadful, no atmosphere and the food didn't seem fresh, the Steak House food was OK but the service here was not great. The Spanish and Italian were both lovely & the staff were great.

The Beach Bars/Restaurants were lovely and always had a good choice of food, our favourite was in front of the Colonial Beach.

Ask the barman to make you a special cocktail and sit back and enjoy, they made some amazing drinks and it had me asking for more (& I am not a big drinker)

Tipping - We took $100 US Dollars for 2 weeks tipping, we generally left the Maid 1 or 2 Dollars a day, the fridge man comes every other day so we left the same for him. If we had a cocktail from the bar we tipped 1 Dollar, we also tipped the service staff at the Buffets as they work very hard.

We had a lovely massage on the beach for approx 30 minutes, this was a lovely experience.

I would highly recommend upgrading to Club Premium as it allows you to use the Colonial & Tropical Buffets, which we used everyday for Breakfast and Evening Meal, we tried to eat in the Beach/Caribe Buffets but it was to warm as there is no aircon.

A few people have also said there is to much walking in this resort, well , I would imagine these people must be overweight or having walking difficulties as from our room to the Colonial Buffet it did not even take 10 minutes, we really enjoyed the walk. We took a SLOW walk from the Caribe to the furthest point of the Palace and it took MAX 20/22 minutes so please dont listen to these moaners.

If we head back to Mexico and I hope we do then we will most defiantley stay here.

Thanks to all the staff for making our Honeymoon special.

We stayed at the Caribe for 2 weeks from the 22 June and had a fantastic time. My husband and I travelled with our 2 daughters aged 20 & 17 and we were all very happy with the holiday . The rooms were spacious and clean, the mini bar topped up daily and when we had a couple of minor issues with one of the rooms they were sorted out within a couple of hours. We loved the food at the buffets and at the speciality restaurants- we had fun evenings at the Mexican, Spanish and Steak restaurants and no problems making the bookings. The grounds are beautiful, as is the beach and we loved to see the wildlife - the iguanas, raccoons etc. We visited Akumal beach twice as the snorkelling with the turtles was a highlight and we had days out at Tulum and Xel-ha- all to be recommended. If you don't snorkel, you need to learn for this holiday or you will miss out on so much! My girls can't wait to return and nor can we.

Post Labor-Day, five day vacation. This resort is BIG. Broken into five sections, the layout is a little confusing but after a few strolls through the beautifully manicured landscape you will understand where everything is. Section One - Maya Beach good. Was closed at this time of year but from the looks of the grounds looked good. Section Two - Maya Caribe - Where we stayed was moderate and upscaled . Section 3 and 4 - Maya Colonial and Maya Tropical were a little better grounds with a few extra amenities, but we were allowed access to that section's pools and grills. Section 5 - Maya Palace - Top of the line all air-conditioned eating facilities, truly all inclusive but quite a bit more expensive to stay on this part of the grounds. Here is my review of Maya Caribe - Rooms: Clean, comfortable. Fridge restocked every afternoon, good selection of beverages. Bathroom, beds and balconies all handsomely designed and modern. View from balcony was of trees, which affords you privacy when sunning or just relaxing. Maid service was slow but the room was done by end of day. Their was a concierge in each building complex. She was able to arrange reservations for on premises restaurants. Food: The Barcelo Maya Caribe has adopted the "pay for better" dinner option. The facility has several restaurants that, when you want that special meal, are not part of the all-inclusive and require a small fee to dine. We ate at two of these specialty restaurants, the Mexican themed one was very pretty, the service was very professional and friendly the food was good and nicely done. We also ate at the Steakhouse. Very, very good. Service was commendable and the chef came out to chat with the patrons; a nice touch. However, if you don't want to spend extra money the buffet is nicely appointed, service is very good and there are tons of choices at every meal. Go on, experiment. Try something you've never tasted before, you might like it.
The beach- It is nicer in the middle (from the Tropical to the Caribe). Plenty of chairs and plenty of palms on the beach for shade. Cleaned daily the sand is fine grain and cool underfoot. Plenty of clear shallow water to see schools of colorful fish. Only complaint, why don't they have more towel huts, had to walk away from the beach and pools to get towels.
Staff - Most staff spoke halting English but could sufficiently communicate. Afterall folks, its Mexico and people there speak Spanish, learn a few words in their language, it is helpfully appreciated. There were plenty of workers cleaning, sprucing and servicing. They do a fine job and were friendly and helpful.
There were no pushy sales guys, very little advertising for excursions (except on their internat TV channel). No vendors on the beach (thank goodness), Only drawback is that it is located over an hour from Cancun airport, but as isolated as it is, there are plenty of snorkeling, sightseeing, boating and other excursions available nearby including Xplor, a new theme park. The concierge or the excursion office in the lobby can arrange trips for you. They are not overly expensive. We took the shopping tour of Playa del Carmen and it was very exciting. 5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen is a mile long strip of shops, restaurants and people. Great for people watching and shopping. Be careful if you go off the main streets. Pretty safe but always be attentive when out and about in public in another country. Ask for bottled water when out of the resort.
What I liked: The price of this trip was very reasonable. The resort was relaxing yet lively, plenty of everything yet enough room to vacation without feeling you are crowded. What I did not like: If you go after Labor Day the crowd is predominantly European or Mexican. They have different ways than Americans and if you are from the USA you should be prepared to be a little alienated, but if you like people you will meld in nicely.

Room Tip: The rooms are a walk from the beach and the pools so don't expect a "pool-view" or a...

Went there in April 2012, it was the second time to Mexico. Last time we went to Cancun and were very very happy, but we just wanted a change. Went to Barcelo Caribe. Very very disappointed.

None of the staff spoke any English, so even a simple question like "where's the washroom?" had to be re-directed to the front desk staff. PS: it's a really really big hotel, so the distance isn't 2 minutes!

Food: The food was not impressive by any means. The food was repeated over and over again. We were there for only 1 week and we were soo tired of the food by the end of it. The restaurants have a very limited time for food. Between lunch and dinner, there's like a 3 hour time when there is no food available. Often we would have to pack up all our stuff from the beach to be able to catch lunch so we don't have to wait 4 hours for dinner.
Their snack bar offered: olives, nuts, and left over buns from breakfast

Beach: AMAZING! one of the benefits of being in Mexico!
Shows: not very impressive either. Very amateur. All shows were in Spanish. Given, a lot of their guests were from Spain, but still.

When we were in Cancun, at the beach, there was staff that walked around to see if you wanted a drink, this one they don't do that. you have to go to the bar (far from the beach) to get ur own drinks.

Wifi: My dad had a lot of work to do with his emails etc that required Wifi and we talked to them about it, and they insisted that we pay daily and wouldn't even have a conversation about it with us. We were fully willing to pay, we just wanted to know if there was any that can be done for us if we were staying for the whole week. They just wouldn't have it. Also, when we did get the day code, only one device could access it. there was three of us who had a laptop and only one could have internet at a time.

NOT happy at all. Totally felt taken advantage of. Not going back
