“Fantastic all-inclusive”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2012

This was our first time with all-inclusive (we have always avoided that), but we were actually pleasantly surprised. All meals were great, with choices for everyone. Besides the meals, all drinks were free during the day, and the mini bar in the room, were refilled daily with soft drinks and beers. After one week you might get bored with the menus, but it certainly works out perfect for a week.
All activities are also included in the room fee (tennis, minituare golf, kayaks etc) together with nightly entertainment. On top there’s lot of activities for kids during the day, so the total package is definitely a good deal.
Beside the buffet restaurants, there are also some ala carte restaurants on the resort, but it was difficult to get a reservation. The reason apparently is, that they are only open for a few nights during the week. However they are not particularly better than the buffets, so don’t be disappointed if you don’t succeed getting reservations.
The beach simply is amazing - white sand, clear blue water and lots of palm trees. The only letdown is that you have to share it with a thousand other guests, but still it was lovely. The best section of beach is without doubt by Caribe/Beach.
The pools are also nice, but rather big and also very crowded during the day (especially the pool bar appears to be crowded).
Rooms were great, just don’t expect total luxury. A/C and fan worked perfectly. Room had a balcony with great view of the area (seemed most rooms had a fairly good view). The gardens were perfectly kept and it was a delight to walk around these beautiful surroundings.
All staff was nice and very service-minded, despite being busy at rush hour in the restaurants.
Both the check-inn and checkout was smooth and perfect by the way.
Caribe and Beach section is alike, but Caribe seems to be less crowded than the Beach section. Especially the buffets were less hectic, but also the pool was quieter without loud music etc, but maybe that’s just a coincidence the week we spent there.

We have just returned from 2 amazing weeks at the Barcelo! We are a couple from UK 28 and 29. I can honestly say I had not a bad word to say about this hotel or its staff.
The transfer was around 1-1.5 hours.
we stayed at the Caribe part of the resort. the whole hotel was on amazing grounds full of wildlife. The staff were always working on the gardens. We upgraded to premier and so got a pool/ocean(not really) view room. The room was a good size, very clean and very comfy beds and pillows. We both slept really well the whole holiday. aircon worked well and mini bar was restocked every day.
the pool at the caribe has a swim up bar and has a nice atmosphere, not as rowdy at the beach but everyone was friendly and chatting.
The beach at this end has no rocks and was very clean. We took a catamaran out a few times and a canoe which was fun. we also snorkled off the end of the pier.

Due to upgrading we had access to the al la cartes every night and we used it all but 2 nights. We had no problem booking them. Our favourites were the Steakhouse and the Japanese. The buffet had good selections and a nice pasta bar if you could nt find anything you liked. I really liked lunch at the beach buffets(more choice at the beach pool grill than the caribe) lots of choice from Salads, Paella, pizza, burgers, nachos, quesedillas etc. Breakfast was very nice, lots of choice again. I liked the omlettes!
We had the upgrade so could have brand names spirits but I had cocktails most of the time and personally really liked them. I also found the wine absolutly fine!

I personally thought the staff were very good, they were always friendly and polite and worked really hard. the only thing I would say is they need an extra one on the theatre bars and pool bars as they are run off their feet. We tipped when we could and they did appreciate it.

there is a lot to do around the hotel so we were never bored. We also did a couple of trips. the speed boat tour was really fun, the shopping trip was not worth doing as they only take you to some run down shopping malls full of the same tat you see in every shop. we also went into Player Del Carmen which I found well worth doing. The hotel offers a tour to Akamel to see giant sea turtles for $40 but we jumped on the bus outdide and for $3 we got there and saw the turtles ourselves- It was amazing and a great experience!

All in all a great holiday in a nice resort, met some lovely people and would definatley return!
Feel free to email me any questions.

Room Tip: WE were in the Tulum block, quiet and close to the pool and beach

My wife and I had a 2 week break here in March 2012. We travelled with the Saga travel group. This is a large resort area based in the Riviera Maya area of Mexico below Playa del Carmen. The Caribe is just one of several accomadation blocks and a hotel within the Barcelo resort area. This is a big area. It is located on the beach with beatiful sand beaches split into 2 sections by a jetty which is the base for all the sea water activities. There are numerous pools none of which are over deep making them safe for all but the smallest tots. At least 1 pool has a canopy to shield from the sun. The garden area's are very well kept with a network of good pathways. It takes a few days to find your way about.

The accomadation blocks are arranged in rows looking a bit like cell blocks. All are low rise. 3 floors only. The rooms are spacious with king size bed, TV, fridge and en suite facilities. All rooms have air conditioning which worked OK. Upper levels have a nice private balcony. Ground floors have less privacy as the sitting areas are often near the footpaths. I would opt for 1st or 2nd floor if you like your privacy.

Food. The Barcelo is All Inclusive. That includes the room fridge contents. The main meal areas are the buffets. Serving breakfast, lunch and evening meal. There are 2 buffet areas for the Caribe. Only 1 serves at lunch time. This is not a problem as many people eat lunch at the pool restaurants. I have read comments that the food is not so good. I can only wonder how these people eat at home. Whilst it was not the best of buffets it was by no means the worst. If you cannot find food to suit your taste from the vast offerings at each meal I would suggest you are a very fussy eater. The layout seemed a bit higgly piggly until you had used it a few times. Plenty of choice at all meals with themed nights on a regular basis. Well done to the chefs and staff for all the hard work in producing these vast amounts of food. It is also possible to pre book the various other restaurants within the complex. The outside restaurants are open planned with thatch roofs and all serve snacks throughout the day as well as lunch and evening meals. You certainly should not starve here.

Other than the many thing to do in the resort outside excursions can be booked in the foyer area. Trips to the Mayan ruins, Cancun and several theme park areas were popular. Car hire is also available. One thing missing was the lack of shops, especially for the ladies. There are shops within the resort but these are pretty limited in what they sell. Nearest decent shopping is Playa del Carmen. 20 mins. taxi ride. There is a massive theatre area with nightly shows. WE thought the shows a bit on the poor side. Certainly most Thomson reps can do as good a job. Obtaining drinks can be slow in the theatre area as there is not a lot of waiters. One failing.

We did not find this resort restful. On our stay there were many young americans. As they cannot legally drink in the USA until 21years of age they book trips into Mexico and attack the booze with gusto. This resulted in quite noisy groups at times although to be fair there was no fighting or trouble. However if you want quiet do not go to the main bars after until after the theatre starts. With reference to Saga holidays we do not feel this is just right for elderly folk. However it is ideal for family groups and the young

We found the staff to be excellent. Most speak good English and are very helpful. Bedrooms were kept very clean and tidy with the fridges replenshed on a daily basis. They deserve all the tips they get. Well done to all of them.

Would I go again. To Mexico YES, very beatiful country. To this Barcelo NO. Not as an elderly couple this is a resort for the more energetic and family groups.

Just got back after staying 11 nights at barcelo maya caribe and we are already booking to go back! The staff are extremely friendly, and very hard working, they deserve every tip they get! The resort is huge, with 5 different hotels. We stayed at the caribe, which we thought was really nice the room is a decent size with a huge bathroom. The buildings are set amung all the trees which gives it a jungle feel, which makes it seem homely. The beach is amazing, the pictures don't do it justice! Plenty of sunbeds, no need to get up early to reserve. Oh yeah no need to take your own beach towels, hair dryers, travel irons etc, the hotel seems to include everything!
Trips:
We did a few excursions; atv tour in which you stop off a cenote, really good trip. Only lasts just over an hour but it's plenty of time.
Chicken itza: brilliant excursion. The ruins are amazing with so much history, you also stop off at a cenote and a Spanish town.
Xcaret: brilliant place so much to do and you need to stay for the show! We also swam with sharks here!
There are many more trips to choose from or you can take a bus to playa del carmen for the shops but to be honest it's more or less the same shops as you will find in the hotels shopping plaza!

I can't wait to go back! :)

My new husband and I stayed at this hotel 2nd May - 16th May, 2 lovely weeks! I will start with the only slightly bad thing I can think of, and that's to do with the holiday company Thomson/First choice not the hotel itself. After a 10 hour flight from Gatwick it took nearly 2 hours to be dropped off to the hotel, we were the 4th drop off which was the last and it was also the drop off that had the most people so I think they should have a dedicated bus for people just at the Barcelo resort, going straight there would only be an hour which is more like it.

Room:
We had read up alot on this hotel before booking and it read really well on trip advisor so we decided to book it for our honeymoon. We did ask the travel agent to make a request for a high floor and to mention it was our honeymoon but when we got there none of these requests had been met but we didn't care, the room we had was a superior double and I think the superior just refers to the bed really, the bed was absolutely huge and really comfy! There was a big flat screen tv on the wall with quite a few english channels. There was a fully stocked mini bar, which was filled everyday. There was fanta, coke, sprite etc.. which we were surprised to see. The maid went into the room everyday and changed the bedding and towels every other day. It was always kept really clean. The bathroom is huge with a nice big shower and the air con is lovely. There was also a free in room safe along with robes and slippers. We stayed in the Labna building which is close to the Caribe pool, it was lovely!!

Grounds:
They are gorgeous and there is are so many staff running around taking care of the place and everyone is so friendly and says "ola!"
There are also iguana's walking around, we only saw 2 the same 2 in the same places everyday, they don't bother you at all they are quite cute!

Food:
There is the main buffet restaurant at the Caribe which is "ok". There isn't much for breakfast that was very english. Only bacon and toast. There are lots of other bits to eat though, I liked the kids corner! There are also a la carte restaurants you can go to, we were allowed to go to 3 a week. We went to the Steak and the spanish, bother are nice, steak is probably the best, both restaurants are really romantic and the service is excellent. You do need to book them early though or they get booked up fast.

Pools and beach:
There are 3 pools that can be used, one at the Caribe (which we stayed in for the majority of the holiday) one at the beach side and one at the colonial. They are huge, they are so inviting and a great place to cool off in the hot sun! Each have a swim up bar and jacuzzi. The beach was one of the best beaches I've ever been to, the sand was white and fine and the sea was crystal clear and really shallow with lots of little fish.

We didn't do any of the excursions while we were there as most involve snorkling and it's not really our thing, but there is lots to do! Do the ATV tour on the quad bikes it was quite cheap and you get to go in a Cenote cave which was really nice. You can book it near the towel shack.

Overall this was the nicest cleanest, most beautiful place we have ever been to and we will definitely be back!!

Room Tip: room walls are really thin and you can hear everything, we were on the ground floor and did get wake...

We went to the Caribe as part of a wedding party. Probably our best ever holiday was in Mexico 4 years ago and so we were really looking forward to this holiday as we would also be with family and friends. I can only compare it to our previous holiday in Mexico when we stayed at the Riu Tequila in PlayaCar, and to the hotels we normally stay in.

The location is not nearly as good as Playacar where you can easily walk in to Playa del Carmen, if you stay in Riviera Maya you are about 20 minutes drive further away thus making the journey into Cancun even longer.

The reviews we read before we went had said that the hotel was no good for singles or couples, only for families with children - wrong! For the first few days of our stay there were about 20 youths staying at the hotel whose presence just seemed to take over the place, they could be heard with their loud clapping chant long before you saw them. My 2 and 6 year old grandchildren were with us and once when sitting in the entertainment theatre we had to move as they came and sat next to us smoking and being exceptionally rowdy which scared the children. They were told not to smoke which they did stop but their rowdiness continued and people left. On several occasions we could see other guests faces when they heard the clapping that preceded their arrival. They also woke other guests up when they arrived back between 4 and 6 am several mornings shouting and clapping as they walked to their rooms.

The children's club was terrible, the mini disco was cancelled several times during the 2 weeks we stayed due to not enough children taking part but at other places they would have still run it if they only had 4 children as other children would probably have joined in and so that the children who had waited to do it wouldn't have ended up being disappointed. When the mini disco did go ahead it sometimes consisted of only two songs! On one occasion we were told the mini disco was going to be something special and would he held in the Jaguars club as it was Mexican children's day. We arrived at the time they had told us on the morning only to be told that the time had been brought forward by an hour and it had finished, ours were not the only disappointed children there were others there that had missed it due to their sudden change of time, I expect it was another disco they cancelled as no one would have attended due to the time change.

Another thing we hadn't read in the reviews was that if you go as a wedding group the guests who don't stay at the Palace will be treated like intruders. The evening before the wedding both families and the bride and groom had arranged to have a meal in the French restaurant at the Palace, as we gathered at the entrance ready to dine we were told that 'you four can go in but the two with the wrong wristbands can't', my daughter-in-law explained that she had arranged for the meal but she was told that they wouldn't serve my husband and I unless we pre-paid our meal. I presume it was the restaurant manager that then spent around 10 minutes on the phone trying to sort it out so that we could go in to eat, all round an extremely embarrassing time and the food was awful - never try the Lobster Cappuccino!!! The same welcome was extended to the grooms friends who were also staying at the Caribe, after the wedding - the photographs were being taken and after they had taken the bride and groom for photos on their own the groomsmen and other friends tried to have a drink in the Palace bar until the special transfer bus arrived to take us to the other end of the resort where the reception was being held, they were told that they couldn't drink there as they had the wrong wristbands, they explained that they were with the wedding party and had to wait for around an hour for the bus and were told 'ok you can have a drink but you're only having one' they were spoken to like naughty school children. There were also several other issues that the bride and groom had to sort out when things had already been arranged and agreed but were then changed without authorisation or consultation, one of these things even had to be sorted out on the morning of the wedding - not good to be having to worry about on such an important day. The wedding itself was lovely and in a lovely setting and the reception was really nice - the two waiters who were assigned to us really did the hotel proud and were excellent.

The hotel is a no cash hotel so you cannot buy anything in the shops or other places on site with cash, it either has to be charged to the room or you have to get a slip and take it to reception, this in itself can take time depending on how busy reception is. My son-in-law was told that he had charged a bottle of wine to his room when he hadn't, when he disputed this and tried to sort it out he was told that he would have to sort it out at the Beach hotel which was odd as we were staying in the Caribe!

The buffet food was very repetitive and unappealing there were 'themed nights' each night but it just seemed to be the flag at the front of the buffet was the only thing to show the theme, the food hardly varied. Normally I am very happy with the buffet and don't want to go to the restaurants but here it was a must, the Mexican was very mediocre but the Steak and the Spanish were excellent.

The higher staff, reception, management and people who perhaps aspired to be management were, in our experience, not as good at customer service as you would hope for and were, in our opinion, put to shame by the bar, waiting, cleaning and ground staff who were really nice, pleasant and friendly, the few that weren't you could understand why.

The rooms were ok. Our room smelt lovely when we arrived but over the next 2 days a pungent smell started to appear, we told reception that we thought something may have been spilt by a previous occupant, they sent someone in to sort it out. The same thing happened again as they had only sprayed to mask the smell so the room was sprayed again, this time we arrived back just as it had been finished and we saw that masks had to be worn to do it, therefore when the smell reappeared we decided we would just spray perfume around to mask the smell as it would be healthier for us.

We feel that a really nice holiday was marred by going to this hotel, we would not waste our holiday or holiday leave by trying another Barcelo hotel, it is certainly back to the Riu for us in future.
