“Great all-inclusive resort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2011

I went to the Barcelo on a last minute vacation. It was my first all-inclusive resort experience, which may turn most people away from this review, but I had an amazing time. The Barcelo resorts are grouped as follows: Beach and Caribe, Tropical and Colonial, and the Palace. The Beach and Caribe are on the lower end in terms of price. The lobby and lobby bar are not air-conditioned. They are air-conditioned in the Tropical and Colonial. As the vacation went on, we actually would have preferred that, especially since when you stay at the Beach/Caribe, you cannot drink at the lobby bars of the other resorts. You can however, drink at the Colonial/Tropical pools, which were by far the best pools of all the resorts.

The room at the Caribe was amazing. Everything was clean and crisp. There was a full mini bar in the room that was stocked every day. There was a nice patio and the air-conditioner worked really well.

We ate at 3 of the restaurants (another downside of staying at the Caribe, we were only allowed to choose from like, 4 restaurants as opposed to the 8 we could have with the Colonial/Tropical) the Steakhouse, the Spanish one, and the Mexican one. The Spanish and Mexican one were absolutely delicious. Steakhouse could have just skipped. The buffet was really great. Every day was something different, even for a 7 night stay.

The staff were so friendly. The pool bars were fun, the bartenders were awesome and really played with the guests. Even though the alcohol was watered down, there was never a shortage and I never waited more than a minute or two for a drink.

Jaguars, the nightclub, was pretty fun. The last night we went seemed to be almost a local night. The strobe light is a bit intense and the floor is ridiculously slippery when wet, but it was still a great time and great music.

We spent most of our time at the beach area by the Beach resort (the best-no rocks, always a ton of chairs available), at the pool and pool bar at the Colonial, and at the lobby bar of the Caribe. This resort definitely got me hooked on the all-inclusive style and I would absolutely return to the Barcelo, but probably to the Colonial or Tropical.

We travelled as a group of 4 friends for a 2 week break. Before heading off on holiday we read some of the negative reviews about this hotel, which made us a bit apprehensive. On arrival, we were pleasantly surprised with the quick and efficient check-in at the beautiful Reception area. The hotel staff i.e. all of the hotel staff, could not have been friendlier, the drinks were great and the food was absolutely fantastic. There were "theme nights" in the restaurants which were also really appreciated as there was a lot of effort applied in providing the themes. We found it hard to understand why some people could make so many negative comments on such a wonderful hotel which is in an absolutely perfect location. The wildlife is fantastic and the beach, which is very clean, is breathtaking with all its magical tropical colours. The hotel gardens are absolutely gorgeous and very well maintained. The evening entertainment provided is of a very high standard and the performers are very professional. We used the travel company located in the Reception lobby; the trips were fantastic with professional and knowledgeable guides. We did the full day trips to Coba and Isla Mujeres and both were fantastic. I also use the massage service provided by the spa which was excellent. The evening housekeeping service was also much appreciated, on arrival at our rooms after a hard day sunbathing etc. the lamp in the room was switched on and chocolates were placed on the beds. The beds are huge and very comfortable. The waiters/waitresses bar staff give you great service whether you tip them or not. US dollars are still widely accepted, in fact all the shops display their prices in USD. Don't believe all the negative reviews you read, this place is superb. All in all, we had a fantastic holiday and would definitely make a return trip. Overall comment - absolutely fabulous with no negative comments whatsoever :-)

Room Tip: Request an additional key for your room to keep the air conditioning running

We were their for our 41st Anniversary. We stayed in the Superior section. Our room was right on the end and right at the pool. The Avenue is a great walk, not far from everything, but a nice walk. We had our choice of Maya Beach or Maya Caribe to eat. The shows were great at night. We ate at the Steak house for our Anniversary, they surprized us with a small cake and sang to us. That was the highlight of our trip. I highly recommend any of the Barcelo Resorts.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2011

Our family of five (3 kids aged 16, 15 and 11) visited the Maya Caribe Beach hotel during spring break this past year. First, let me say that my opinion may be swayed a bit because I am not sure I am a huge fan of the all-inclusive type vacation. I much prefer renting a car and going the local route, visiting small towns and eating at local restaurants. That said, I was open to trying an all-inclusive as we thought it would enable us to really relax and not worry about planning a heavy itinerary. I've broken my review out into categories so that you can search for the specific aspects of the resort you are most interested in:

Room Quality: The rooms were clean and nicely decorated with a lovely balcony that looked out over the treetops and we would sit and watch the wildlife (beautiful birds, lots of different small mammals and tons of iguanas.) No complaints except for the A/C, which worked only moderately in our room, and even less so in our kids room, which was across from ours b/c they could not accommodate our request for adjoining. The A/C would not work unless you left a room key in the slot so that it would not cool during times when you were away. The problem with this is that it was so hot there, it took forever to re-cool the room, so we just chose to leave one of our keys in the slot all the time in an attempt to keep things cool. The buildings were open to the outdoors in order to make you feel as though you were in the tropics, which was really nice, but as a result, the "hallways" were quite wide with an open balcony in the center so we were quite a distance from our kids' room. Make sure you have a firm commitment if you want adjoining rooms. Worked out OK for us b/c of the ages of our children. Also, our building was a pretty decent walk from the lobby so be prepared to hoof it a bit if you are in one of the further buildings.

Staff: The staff was pleasant but not overly friendly. We had a few minor problems during our stay and they were just very business-like and not overly warm. We did have several of the wait staff in the buffet restaurants engage with us and the kids so we continually sat in their stations, but some were not too friendly. Perhaps there is just such a large volume of people and such turnover that they do not feel they need to make the effort?

Food: The food in the buffets was quite good - pretty decent variety and several things you could customize like omelets, scrambled eggs and smoothies (just pureed fruit). Fabulous cappuccino (you have to ask for it) and my kids all loved the fresh fish and fresh fruit salsas that were available most days. Many of the items were served repeatedly but each day there were different entrees or fish and they tried to change the theme (ie. seafood night, spanish food night, etc.) but I'm not sure I noticed too much difference in the items offered on those nights - it was more reflected in the decorations. There was the option of dining in several "specialty" restaurants (a steak house, spanish restaurant, mexican restaurant, seafood restaurant, etc.) and depending upon the number of nights you stayed at the resort, you received a specific number of vouchers for the restaurants. What they did not tell me when I booked was that because we were only staying 6 nights we could only have 2 vouchers for the restaurants and we were not eligible for the steak or seafood restaurant b/c we needed to be there a minimum of 7 nights in order to dine in those restaurants. They also did not tell me that the restaurants book up VERY quickly and we were lucky to even book a time slot at either of the two restaurants we were entitled to dine at despite making our reservations the 2nd night we were there. My advice is to make your reservations immediately when you arrive. Overall, the food was good, but again, because I typically like to venture out and about, i got a bit tired of eating at the same buffet 3x a day. There are also buffets that are close to the beach and are great for lunch, but again, similar food is served and, while it was mostly pretty good, I got a bit tired of it after 6 days. Drinks were OK, but as I would expect at an all-inclusive, there was more mixer than alcohol in most of them but it was still nice to float up to the bar in the pool and grab a drink or bring a drink down to the beach.

Beach/Pools: The beach is visually very beautiful. White sand and turquoise water, palm trees and plenty of chaise lounges. The water is not ideal for snorkeling though - it is very cloudy. There is an area to the right that is very shallow and is OK for snorkeling, but make sure to wear water shoes b/c of urchins. We had great success with snorkeling to the left of the pier (left side of the caribe beach) - saw tons of fish, coral, octopus, etc. Pleasantly surprised - just as good as our day-trip to Akumal, which was supposed to be superb snorkeling. One word of warning though - the beach directly in front of the caribe resort )mostly on the right side) does have some very large boulders that are hard to see because of the cloudy water. They can literally almost reach the surface of the water (about 3 feet in diameter in some cases) depending on the level of the tide, and you will find yourself running into them if you don't walk slowly. Overall, we loved the beach though - just those few things to be aware of. The pools were very nice - nothing amazing but very pretty. Not much for older kids, such as slides, etc. Frequently had vendors with parrots and monkeys come to the pool for "photo-ops" where your kids could have their photos taken with the animals and purchase the photos. Also had occasional activities at the pool but we did not participate in them.

Daytrips: We took day trips to Akumal, as I mentioned, and to Xplor adventure park. We really enjoyed Akumal - snorkeled and had lunch at a local restaurant right on the beach (fish tacos and coronas were awesome!) and thoroughly enjoyed our day at Xplor zip-lining and swimming in the underwater caves. A really fun day for the kids. Akumal was definitely much busier than when my husband and I visited there 20 years ago - but still enjoyable and enabled me to get off of the resort for the day. Taking a taxi there cost us about $15 each way.

Airport Transport: We used Cancun Valet for our transportation to/from the hotel and they were there when we expected them, on time, ready to go. Highly recommend using them, or another similar company, for your transport to/from the airport.

Hotel was everything we hoped for with friendly and accommodating staff, set in beautiful grounds with a gorgeous beach and large (often empty) pool. The rooms are large, comfy, clean and the air conditioning works well. We went in late September to early October and the weather was great, with only one or two days of showers.
The hotel is located close by to a number of tourist attractions, such as Xel-Ha, Xplor and Xcaret, which were all great days out.
The food in the hotel was excellent, with several restaurants and the main buffet to choose from. The food was always fresh, well presented and offered a good selection.
A fantastic holiday with many great memories, would definately recommend to family and friends.

From August 14th thru the 20th , 16 of us stay at the Barcelo Maya Caribe, ages ranging from 19 to 65. The following is my review of our stay.

Check in. Simple and easy. We were greeted with a smile, gave the man our names, showed our passports, told him we had 7 rooms and would like them to be as close as possible. He accommodated every request. The entire process took less then ten minutes. As we were at the counter, a lady came by and offered us some non alcoholic refreshments that she had on her tray.

Rooms: We had the garden view with two double beds. Others had the king. The rooms were large, clean and very nice. In the rooms was a well stocked refrigerator with soda, water, beer and juices. The room also had a safe, hair dryer, an iron and iron board. The air conditioning system worked well, although some from the group said their room could have been cooler. The room also features a conservation system where you have to slide your room key into a key slot to get the lights and air to work. If you wish to by pass this system so your room will be cooler, you can leave the room with your extra key card in the slot, or take an old expired gift card and slide it in. I did it and it worked. Beds were comfortable. They were on the hard side, but everyone in the group loved them.

Grounds: Beautiful and extremely clean!! The place was spotless. The grounds very large since you are part of a 5 hotel complex. Everywhere was exceptionally clean. The complex had good beach sections and bad. The Caribe and Beach hotels had the best beaches with a hand full of rocks on the bottom. Some of the other sections were full of rocks. We had no problems getting beach or pool chairs. Some reviews suggested this was difficult. Perhaps we were in off season. Do see the other complexes you can walk along the trail, beach or take the complementary bus provided by the hotel.

Pools: Although we stayed at the Caribe, we had access to all the pools. The Caribe pool was probably the smallest, however it wasn’t small!! Every pool was warm and crystal clear. I can’t get my pool at home as clear as they do!! No debris were at the bottom…no slim. The pools are perfect.

Swim up bars: All the pools had swim up bars. We sat at the bars at the Maya Beach hotel, the Maya Colonial and of course the Maya Caribe. From other reviews I understand we may not have been able to drink at the other places since they use top shelf, so we didn’t try. The bar tender “Sandy” at the Caribe was by far best bar tender. We found that the bar tender at the Colonial was limited on the kinds of drinks he was able to make. But we didn’t see it as a big deal…bar tenders vary in this country also.

Restaurants: Breakfast were at the non air-conditioned buffets. The buffets were large and offered a wide variety of foods, from cereals, pancakes, omelets, fruit, etc etc. The services always greeted us with a smile, said iHola, and continually filled our cups with water, coffee, juices, etc etc.
Lunch was served at these same buffets. Again the food was varied and there is something for everyone.
Dinner. Depending on home many days you stay at the resort will determine how many vouches you will get for dinner at a restaurant instead of the buffets. We stayed for 6 days, therefore we were offered two vouches per person. Since we stayed at the Maya Caribe we were also limited to what restaurants we could eat at. You do not have access to all the restaurants when you stay at the Caribe or Beach. However our choices were Don Quijoce (Spanish), El Agave (Mexican) and Captains Morgan (Sea food). The first two are air conditioned, Captains Morgan is not, however it was right on the beach so we had a refreshing breeze. Although we had vouches for only two sittings, we were able to get 4 sittings since it was a slow time of year apparently. Just ask the lady in the lobby that takes the reservations and see if she can accommodate you. The food at all three restaurants were excellent!!! The servers couldn’t do enough for you. Friendly, smiling, saying iHola…what a nice experience.
Now, two nights we ate at the dinner buffets. Again they are served at the same place as the breakfast and lunch buffets. Food was very good.

Entertainment: The Maya Caribe seems to be “Sleepy Hollow” compared to the Beach. The Caribe didn’t have any music, aerobics, volley ball, pool soccer…nothing. However a short walk away was the Maya Beach complex which offered all of these. My wife actually went up to the Maya Tropical pool to do aerobics one morning. So depending what complex you stay at will determine the kind of activities, if any, they have. The Caribe was definitely much quieter.
Night entertainment was offered at two theaters on the complex. We alternated between them depending on the shows they offered. The theaters are non air-conditioned and therefore were very hot this time of year. I found the theater shows to be boring. They really need to improve in this area. From the reviews I understood that the Michael Jackson show was amazing. Well, I think they had a stand in the night we went. The performer was out of step with the dancers, he lipped sang in such a poor way that he was mouthing lyrics when the song was playing nothing but music. You would think the guy would know the songs since he supposedly does it weekly. Their was one show on Friday that was actually good. It was a review of dancing and songs from cultures around the world. It was done well.
After the theater we went over to the dance club, Jaguars. The place is hoping. If you like loud dance music, lights and dancing you would love this place. We enjoyed it.

Shopping: In the middle of the complex was a shopping area. The place offered Jewelry, liquor, gifts, etc etc. From what I understand these prices were the same as offered off the complex.

Activities: The complex offered complementary snorkel (limited to an hour at a time), sailing, kayaks and a free scuba lesson in the pool. For a fee you could parasail, rent a jet ski, or go into the ocean for a dive. Snorkeling is excellent right at the finger pier at the hotel. However it would be best if you take along your own snorkel gear. It doesn’t have to be fancy. The fish are right at the pier. Simply enter the water and you will be surrounded by fish. Mini golf, a chipping green, tennis, pool tables (at the sports bar) were also available.

I found the Barcelo Carib and the entire complex to be a beautiful vacation destination. I have read many of the negative reviews and could not believe I was in the same place those people were writing about. Our entire group sat around one evening and tried to find reasons to complain. Except for the shows, their really isn’t anything significant to complain about. The place is clean and beautiful. The workers were overly friendly. Just look them in the eye, give them a smile, and you will be greeted with a big iHola!!. The buffets were good. If you have been to a buffet before you will know what to expect..just better and there is something for everyone. Sure it is the same day in and day out..but it is a buffet. If you have never been to a buffet, well then you may be surprised. The dinners at the restaurants couldn’t be better. I have been on 14 cruises and the food is compatible. Two people at the end of our week did get slightly sick. Those people didn’t follow the Center of Disease Control (CDC) recommendation on how to prevent this type of illness. My wife and I along with others have been to many Caribbean countries and always follow the CDC recommendation and never had a problem. Language was Spanish. Even the shows were mostly in Spanish. I think some people believe that they should be in English to accommodate Americans. Well, in this country what language are our shows in? We had some difficulty communicating with the employees. But this was confined to the bus boy type of employees and not the waiters or front desk.
I believe you would love your stay at the Barcelo Complex. When you factor in the cost it is an excellent bargain. The negative reviewers I couldn’t figure out. I can’t wait to go back. Any questions please feel free to email me. MikeACY@Verizon.net
