So this is my second review of Bacelo Maya Beach. I am still guilty of reading tons of reviews before our trip even though this is our fourth time at Barcelo! The other two times we stayed at the Tropical. Once again I have to comment on the crazy things people complain about. Okay, so I get it....THERE ARE NO FACE CLOTHS!!! OMG... haven't you people heard of makeup remover wipes? Or how about this...pack a couple of your own for God's sake! You're on vacation! Have a drink and stop worrying about the lack of face cloths! Okay...on to my review:
This trip we were met by our Daughter and husband who flew in from Naples, Italy and our other Daughter, husband and Granddaughter who flew in from San Diego. Both families are in the U.S. Navy so obviously this trip was very special to us, being all together in one place. My husband and I and our 15 year old son have been to the resort before but this was their first time.
Arrival: I was pleasantly surprised with the friendliness and and efficiency of the front desk staff. This had been an issue in many reviews and we have encountered some problems on past visits. Nice to know Barcelo reads reviews and corrects obvious problems. We were greeted with a drink and and checked in very quickly. We got to the hotel early and couldn't get to our rooms right away, but we were able to go to lunch and have a quick look around.
Rooms: We had basic rooms, which are always fine for us because we spend most of our time at the beach. About 5 days into our 10 day stay it started raining and we had some water leakage into our room so we were moved to a club premium junior suite. My younger daughter was moved into a junior suite on door down also, because their air conditioning wasn't working. Again, the front desk staff was very helpful with making this change. I'm not going to lie, there were definitely some mixups with moving room to room, but overall I felt it was handled well. Our new junior suites were AMAZING! Unfortunately, our room had a musty smell to it, but our daughter's did not. These rooms are beautiful and for basic travelers like us, it was probably appreciated so much more than by people who are used to this type of "fancy" accommodations. One night there was a knock on the door and an employee just showed up with champagne and chocolate covered strawberries!! We aren't exactly the Beverly Hillbillies, but we get really excited over special things and this made our day! Our rooms were cleaned perfectly each day. One day my husband took a nap during the afternoon, and when he woke up we just called the front desk to send someone to clean it, and it was done by the time we got back from the beach.
The beach here is absolutely gorgeous and it's what will keep me coming back year after year. Being able to snorkel right off the beach and pier is so nice. The water was a bit rough while we were there but we were still able to get some snorkeling time in. You can walk end to end, from the beach to the palace every single day and never get tired of the views. The pools are also beautiful and there are fun activities going on during the day. We played bingo and I won a Barcelo.com hat and my son in law won a "dip" with the dolphins! Drinks at the pool bar were great and not too long of a wait time. My son in law decided to try all the daily drink "specials" and we finally decided we liked the "Riviera Maya" the best.
Very good for an all-inclusive. Anyone who cannot find SOMETHING to eat has to be extremely picky or just an overall miserable person. Some nights are better than others, but I don't think there was ever a day where we felt we didn't have a good meal. We only went to the reservation dinners twice, once at the Spanish open air restaurant, which I hate to say was horrible and the Mexico Lindo, which was good. We ordered wedding cake to celebrate our daughters wedding to be delivered to our table after dinner. There was a mix up, no one knew anything about it, but by the end of our meal, somehow/someway we ended up with a beautiful cake. Most issues we have had at the resort seem to be of a communication nature, so we just try to go with the flow and not get too worked up about it. We did pay 10 dollars a person to eat at the Palace buffet one night and to be honest it didn't seem much better than the our hotel, so in future I would probable just stick to where we are at.
Overall we had yet another wonderful trip. I honestly don't know how people can complain about things that don't really matter, like face cloths, but I do think that some people are just impossible to please. If you are looking for a basic, very clean room then you don't need to upgrade to the junior suite. If you like a bit more of a "fancy" feel to your room then by all means go for the Junior suite, we loved it and used the jacuzzi every day!! One suggestion I would make to Barcelo is to have activities for when it rains!!! We had two days of torrential rain and NOTHING to do. Seriously, set up Bingo or anything in the theater. That was the ONE thing that really stood out to us. I can't imagine what people with kids ended up doing. We will definitely be back next year for our anniversary in February and hopefully another time with all the kids again in July.
P.S. Walk across the highway to Cenote Azul and swim in the crystal clear water....amazing!
