“escape from the uk rain”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2014

my wife and I stayed at the tropical complex on this vast site. Our room was well situated oposite the theatre so not far from the swimming pools and beach, but a fair walk from the main restaurant and even further from the lobby.(room 7341) The room was good, balcony overlooking well tended gardens with coconut palms, lots of colorfull birds and iguanas subathing. The food was of a high standard with a massive choice, the restaurants you had to book were good, our favourites the japanese and italian, but we didnt try them all! The drinks were ok, lots of cocktails, loads of ice, local spirits, mostly too sweet for us, mahitahs our favourite.
We could always get sunbeds, both round the pools and on the beach. the beach is fine white sand, there are rocks at various places in the sea so be carefull! it got quite windy while we were there and so the rough sea exposed even more rocks, also due to the wind a lot of the included water activities were not operational.
we never saw any unwelcome insects that you often find at tropical resorts, if you know what i mean! and we did not get bitten at all!
the staff were all helpfull and friendly, the vast majority of the guests were canadian so we shared almost the same language (joke).
the entertainment was ok, they all work very hard but we got a bit tired of the mexicon music.
all in all though we enjoyed it. very good theatre layout!
we booked with thompson/first choice, our hotel transfer on arrival was not that good, rep hard to find, battered old transit minibus, the way he drove weaving through the traffic i thought his other job must be a getaway driver, however we arrived in one piece. the transfer on the return journey was the direct opposite, luxury coach, excellent accompanying rep. who was most helpfull and informative. what a shame we didnt meet with him before as we were supposed to have a welcome meeting the day after our arrival, we went to it and no rep. ever came, another couple also waited in vain and confirmed we were all in the right place. the texts to and from thompsons went back and forth for a week but no rep. untill the start of the second week, not impressed!!!!!
our return flight had no in flight entertainment at all, broken down, the lights kept going out and the overhead call lights kept going on of there own accord, all these things we were told were on the same electrical system as the entertainment.
we found the cabin crew disinterested in the passengers chattering amongst themselves most of the time they were serving passengers, they gave out the questionares to fill in, when lights permited this, but to my knowledge they were never collected, so hotel great! not sure about the rest!!!!!

We stayed at Barcelo Maya Beach for a week - Feb to March 2014 - and it was fantastic! It's a beautiful resort - grounds, beaches and pools were amazing; rooms were clean and comfortable; attractions and nightlife were fun and the a la carte restaurants were delicious!! For me, the buffet left something to be desired because I am used to eating quite healthy, and someone in our group had their safe broken in to, so be aware of that. But all in all, our group had an amazing time at Barcelo Maya Beach!

A special shout out to Jose who was an amazing bartender and took very good care of our large wedding group!

So great to get out of below zero weather and find the great sunny beaches at Barceló. We stayed at the Caribe Beach. The grounds are beautiful and very well kept. Loved the lobby and the bar on the "island". The beach here is fantastic. No palapas--even better are the myriad of palm trees around for shade. No need to go out in the middle of the night to put your towel out as there are plenty of lounge chairs. The sandy beach is superb. The pools are great-they have great fixtures with water pounding out and you can get a great neck massage. The rooms are very nice. Ice machine did not work but not too far to get one that did. It was very nice that you did not have to pay extra for the specialty restaurants and many concierge's to help with reservations. The system for making reservations for anything was great. .
The food on a whole was quite good. For Mexican nite I wish they would have had more Mexican dishes. Did not care for the steakhouse but the lamb chops at the Mexican Lindo were great.
The entertainment was awful. It started very late at night and was so loud you needed more than ear plugs! That could be improved upon.
All in all it was the best all inclusive I have been to -out of at least 10. My second best is the Riu in Costa Riva

Room Tip: I liked being on the bottom floor although people going to rooms late at night were noisy. We were i...

We stayed at the Barcelo Maya Beach in March 2013 for one week. We were there with friends and we were 6 in total (3 couples). We were there before this section of the Barcelo had been upgraded.

The site is nice and the beach is really good for a beach in Riviera Maya. The rooms were not up-to-date but very clean. The food at the buffet restaurant was really repetitive for a 1 week vacations. The included A La Carte restaurants were good. We payed for a dinner at the Coral Grill and it worth the price. This rerstaurant is very good.

Alcool drinks are good but there is nothing refined. There are some taps in some location on the site from which you can serve yourself with draft beer. The idea is good but sometime when the barrel is empty, it takes time to change it. Don't taste or try the house wines, they are really bad, event at the Coral Grill. If you really want wine, buy a bottle of wine in Play del Carmen.

There is a Cenote front of the hotel that I suggest to visit. This is a small place with a really personalized service.

10 days (Feb 27 to Mar 9, 2014) of paradise!! The food at this resort was by far the best of any I've stayed at before insofar as flavor and variety. A bit confused by other reviewers negative comments ... we were always treated with a smile and service was excellent everywhere we went. There were times when the staff were overrun in the buffet, but that can happen anywhere and it certainly did not deter from our overall experience. I alway cringe when I observe how some travelers treat these hard working people and in my view is always a negative experience on any vacation - the rudeness of others! This resort - in my opinion - rooms are excellent, the grounds are immaculate and beautiful, the pools are many and lovely, the staff is very friendly. As wine drinkers - we found the wine was quite good - white and red! The beach is good, not the best I've experienced but still very good with lots to see if you like to snorkel. The only "negative" (for lack of a better word), was evening things to do ... we are two 40 something singles and during our visit the resort was mainly occupied by couples and families. There is a disco, which we went to a few times, but its seemed entirely geared to the very young crowd (19 year olds). If you are single and wanting to mingle, this is probably not the place to go, but if you want to just relax and be treated well - its a for sure! All and all, a very beautiful resort with lots of do.

Room Tip: 3rd floor rooms have nice private balconies (stucco walled vs. glass).

Food: Buffet and Restaurants- This was the highlight of our stay. The principal buffet is delicious with lots of variety. Also the servers are wonderful and very friendly. After we returned home, we would wake up every morning wishing that we were eating our usual Barcelo breakfast (after a couple of days you know exactly what you will eat). I can’t say enough praise about the buffet. Our restaurant options were the Mexican and Spanish restaurants. Our experience was mixed here: The Mexican restaurant offered the most delicious food we ate the entire week. However, something was wrong that night as we were served our meal about an hour after we were seated. The Spanish restaurant was the opposite: the service was excellent yet both of our meals were very unappealing. Next time we will most likely pass our free tickets to the Spanish restaurant.
Beach/Pools: The beach was exactly as you seen in pictures: white sands, crystal blue water. Also, the most surprising aspect was that it feels quite spacious. Although it was officially high season (with high numbers of tourists), there was plenty of space and you did not feel suffocated by too many people. The water was cool and usually by about 3 PM it was not particularly warm enough to take a dip in the ocean. The pools are very beautiful and are perfect for families as they offer lots of activities for children and adults alike.
Hotel: The hotel is really beautiful. The landscaping is perfect and the buildings are very nice. In particular, the high end hotel is worth a look as it has marble everywhere with grand halls and open floors.
Room: Our room was another low point in our stay. We found it quite cold every night and extremely humid. Every night we were totally bundled up and even wore sweat pants and sweaters in bed. Still, the rooms are very nice and the bathroom is spacious and classy.
Processes/Procedures: The only downside was the check in/check out processes. We arrived at 9 am and could not check into our room as check-in is at 3 PM. This meant that we had to dig through our suitcases in the middle of the lobby to get our beach attire and supplies. Of course, this was our first time, and on our next visit if we arrive before check-in, we’ll come with a separate bag ready to hit the beach. Furthermore, since hotels guests tend to arrive in large groups, the check in process can take a while as many people are keeping the lobby staff and bell hops busy. In our case, it was approximately an hour before we were able to get to the beach. The check-out process took a bit less.
Booking your return taxi is a bit of a hassle. The way it was arranged through our package (I don’t know if it’s like this for everyone), we had a scheduled time to meet the West Jet representative to “book” our return taxi. The whole process is inconvenient and ceremonial since the package vacation is all booked in advance. However, this is an opportunity for the West Jet representative to inform you about additional trips and tourists spots to visit in case you want to leave the hotel. We felt it was primarily promotional in nature. Also, we didn’t like the fact that we had to wait for 30 minutes while our representative was seeing other customers. After all, we were only there for 5 days and we really wanted to take every possible second on the beach or relaxing somewhere rather than sitting through a light sales pitch. To be fair, we had no intention of leaving the hotel for additional activities and some people might. Still, this should be optional.
The least enjoyable part was a true sales attempt where a representative tries to sell a vacation discount package. This sales promotion, however, was not presented as mandatory. Still I felt the salesman was a bit upset when we didn’t choose to buy the vacation deal.
Entertainment: Every night the hotel offers evening entertainment of some sort. For example, we saw a Michael Jackson impersonator/stage show one night. I recall another night had a karaoke.
I really loved this resort and I plan to be back soon, it was a wonderful trip.
